Lindsey Fallow tries out some of the myriad new audio kit coming to the market. First up, a new Mini Disc vending machine that will allow users to download thousands of different songs onto a Mini Disc for around £2 per track.
Next, a digital wrist watch featuring possibly the smallest MP3 player in the world, allowing you to store up to 16 minutes of audio. Finally Lindsey attempts to convince analogue loving DJs Timmi Magic and DJ Spoony of the benefits of digital music, with a professional MP3 DJ deck kit.

I love the late 90s ear;ly 2000s aesthetic. I was in elementary school then and it was such a cool time for tech. nothing beats the christmas I got a sony cd walkman. Minidiscs werent even on my radar at the time. I only learned of them later. Such a cool technology.

God everything was so much cooler back then! I miss the 2ks so much! Even the clothes were cooler. Like what Lindsey is wearing, the tech vest and pants, to me that still looks futuristic today. I'd dress that way everyday if I could.

you are probably one of the people who notice the texture quality in old videos and pictures like me. Unfortunately everyone thinks 4k and stuff like that are good, but I like the old quality on the contrary. For example, look at Keanu Reeves' photo from the 90's and his photo taken now, there used to be a soul and texture, unfortunately now it's lost.

They were made in good quality at the time at 480p but it’s just they were broadcast on shirt quality TVs at the time! 😂

@@CJFS00s 576i for a UK broadcast I would think. They still look nice on a good CRT because there's no deinterlacing or upscaling involved but often they often look bonk on a 4k TV due to bad implementations of the above or because they were just recorded off the telly via VHS or whatever. The Beeb have done a good job here.

Such an exciting era and the internet is actually fun and less toxic than now today. I could lose hundred of hours browsing the internet and each sites are unique unlike today where they use generic frameworks like bootstraps, etc. Wish I could go back to this era and experience it all over again.

I remember the adverts for mini disc in 90s. Then disappeared. Then I got one, then adverts came back, then mp3 came in and killed them. But couldn't afford an MP3 player so stuck with mine till 2004. Had my Kenwood player that I'd record the mini discs on. But moved to the coast in 2004 and the movers killed the Kenwood mini discs player in the move. So it got retired and I finally moved to mp3.

People back then often said “the future is now”. It really was. I wouldn’t say “the future is now” now though, what I would say is “the present is eternal”. The trouble with chasing the future as we did back then, is eventually when you manage to catch it, it dies, along with our collective hope

I like physical media, and I'm saddened that there is no real need for something like this anymore. Spotify isn't the same. Yes you could almost get anything, but there's a charm to limitation and using a seperate device for music.

The beginning of the end. Digital production and internet distribution ruined music and more besides. I did music technology at college in '97 and the tutor reckoned CDR vending machines in record shops like that MD one were gonna be the future, lol. Those DJs were more enamoured with the Korg Kaoss Pad fx unit than the digital mixing software, lol.
