3 of the front runners get together going through Paddock Hill and Steve Hislop comes off by far the worst, breaking his neck in the resulting accident.
He came out of hospital after that, with an undetected broken neck. Got back on a bike, and found he couldnt use his left arm as a result of a broken neck vertibrate, and damaged nerves, it wasn until days after that he met a guy called Ian Sabin, who found out and told him he broken his neck!!! he eventually had a successfull operation, and regained strength in his left arm, and won another title in 2002.
Yes, Brands Hatch, crowds of over a 100,000 in the 90s, with many wildcard riders, best racing weekends i ever had since the start of the Transatlantic Trophy races in the 70s,
Compare the massive crowd at Brands with the pathetic turnout at Siverstone this weekend (2013). Come on Brands, swallow your pride and get the Superbikes back at Brands!!
"I think Steve hislop took a knock on the head there!!??"...what is the bloke, blind? he BOUNCED on his head about 5 times as he was flung through the bloody air!
I was there that day and saw it first hand and honestly thought he was dead. The Doctor that diagnosed his broken neck told him that a violent sneeze could have ended in disaster.Great rider and sadly missed.
Remember it well... he was very lucky indeed. The amount of trauma to his neck was enormous. Fortunately the softness of the gravel saved him. Had it been something with less give, the tarmac or even the grass, I think he'd have been a goner.
@RickSue1969 Can't really compair though. Firswt corner at Brands, you know that there is going to be SOMEBODY have a biggy there, so Marsalls and first aid are posted there for fast access to the riders. Plus teh pit exit is right across from it so the medics got there faster. Most ordianry Marshalls wouldn't know what to do.
