Ok so being the nerd that I am, I tried to do the math problem but technically I don’t think it’s solvable since you need to find at least one value for the length or width of the trunk. You could do this if you had the value of the area, but we are only given the perimeter, and so you can’t really find the values for the length or width, at least to my knowledge. BUT, based on an educated guess, I’m gonna say the answer is no, you cannot stand up all the cans on the floor of the trunk. How did I get this answer? Easy, the video shows that they stacked the cans lol

Given the math problem at 0:55, the length of both x and y are = 0.75m or 75cm. The area of the trunk is x*y = 5625cm2. 4*pi^2 = 40 cm2 would be the full area of the beans, but that is the circle and we need a square area meaning we need the radius squared. (40/pi^-2)*2 = 7.1^2 = 50cm2. 5625/50 = 113 cans of beans. The beans cannot fit into the trunk.

I think I might have the math problem at 0:56! Ok maximized area is a square when width and height are 0.75 m or 75 cm. (You can double check this by using a system of equations and then taking the derivative of the area function for a rectangle.) Next we know that the base of a can is 4pi^2. Now this is where it gets odd. For a problem with such nice numbers, 4pi^2 is not a nice number. Most likely it’s a typo and he repeated the square, meaning he most probably meant that the area should be 4pi cm^2, not 4pi^2 cm^2. I’ll do both separately, first 4pi. This gives us a radius of 2 and a diameter of 4. Instead of thinking of the cans as circles, think of them as putting squares in a box. Each can would fit into a 4x4cm box with room to spare. Therefore one row could be filled with 18 cans (75/4 rounds down to 18) with 18 columns. 18x18= 324, meaning the cans will fit, if my assumption that there’s a typo is correct. I’ll do both 4pi^2 now. This gives us a radius of 2*sqrt(pi) or a diameter of 4*sqrt(pi). Now doing the previous method of imagining them in perfect rows leads us to only fit about 100 cans. However, imagine if there were alternate rows where cans were shoved in between other cans to maximize space. (Row 1 has 10 cans, row 2 has 9 cans, row 3 has 10 cans). By squishing them together, can we get double the rows? We can probably get 1 or 2 more rows, but doubling seems out of the question. I considered the cans as squares since you can't perfectly fit circles together in groups so then I used the SA to calculate the diameter of each can which was about 7.1 cm. Then divide 75 by 7.1 cm to get 10.6 cans that can fit along one length of the trunk. I estimate about 100 cans can fit in the imaginary trunk.

The trunk is 75cm square. Dividing it's area by the area of a can gives an upper bound of 142 cans (which is probably impossible) so the answer is no. The radius of a can is about 3.545cm, so you can fit 10 in 75cm with room for just over half a can remaining. Square packing therefore achieves 100 cans. Hexagonal packing achieves 12 rows of 10, i.e. 120 cans. Might be possible to do a few more but I can't work out how.
