For SEMA 2023, we had featured Cavan and Russell Cameron's 1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am dubbed "Hammerhead". This father-son project started off as a high school co-op program that ended up spiraling out of control, and essentially became an Indy Car, with a Trans Am skin ontop.
Check out this interview that goes through the whole build in detail, and shows how the Vibrant components will help this vehicle with all the racing that Cavan and Russel plan to do, but also how it helped them complete the car on time for SEMA!

Gorgeous!!! I love to see the wild, innovative, & beautiful sorta road racing track focused resto-mods with insane custom wide-bodies!!¡! I'd love to see some old-school (like '60s or maybe even '50s -'80s "luxury" & "gentleman's personal luxury touring coup" types of vintage cars with max'd out wide bodies, massive "Pikes Peak like" aerodynamics, with the most unique custom interiors that will blow any1's mind!!!🤯

It's both, his dad had the experience with the Indycar background, but his son is top of his class Motorsports Engineering. He was able to engineer the aero components and also did the fabwork on some of the components like the headers. His father's experience definitely helped in a lot, but Cavan is also a fulltime student so he wrenched on the car in any of his free time.

What a legendary build! But im confused on won't having turbos so far from exhaust make turbo lag worse? I would love to know if they compared the hp & torque loss due to turbo placement or it was just marginal & weight distribution/packaging makes far bigger of a difference to counteract the turbo lag

I follow the instagram page. I really like the car from an engineering standpoint, it’s an exercise in excess. I did see the build on social media. Can’t say I’m thrilled at taking apart a pristine original 1973 trans am that only about 4,800 were made. But anyway. It’s definitely over the top, using 2000-2004 Indy car parts, and design that really doesn’t fit in any racing class at all. I would be interested to see it run at the flying mile, or bonneville, or maybe laguna seca or Nürburgring.

Russel found a nearly fully rotted out 73 Trans Am. You're right, there's very few of them left but this one was destined for the scrap yard. If Russel hadn't found this northern example, it would have been a can of pop by now. You will see the car across American tracks and hopefully outside of it as well like you mentioned.

@@VibrantPerformanceTV the only pic they showed on this video was a pretty clean 73 trans am. I’ve seen many a project that started with a roof. Project recycled on instagram and Scraptona was little more than a roof and firewall, with totally rusted floors. Project recycled and Scraptona, and with amd making body panels you can build a third gen firebird or Camaro from scratch. There is no need to not restore low production numbers cars anymore. With rusted out second gen Camaro getting $10k and firebirds and trans getting premium prices, no one scraps low production number cars anymore. It’s pretty evident that this was a build that how much money it was going to cost never came into the equation. I didn’t say I didn’t like the car, it’s pretty over the top and beyond what your average car builder could do. But we like over the top builds.

We do too, and you do present a great point. You also have to look at the fact that if the Trans Am was a full resto, it would have fallen into the mix of all other restored Trans Ams. This car will go out and be used, raced, and be seen all over the world. We love seeing people use a car like this and create something amazing like this car that is unique and talked about. We definitely respect and understand your opinion through.

@@VibrantPerformanceTV yeah the protouring thing has gone from useable classics with upgrades to over the top and beyond. I’m no purist but I understand it. And the cost for most average protouring builds have surpassed $100k even $200k. Even if I could afford and F40, it’s just not a car everyone owns, might try to ride in one at least once. But I’m good with my 74 Camaro. It may never get finished but building is half the journey.

You're right, they didn't, but Cavan and Russell wanted a capable engine that was built by a reputable engine builder. There's some items that were repurposed but they wanted to use a newly built LSR for competition

This is an incredible car, but why did you have to hack up a perfectly good Firebird to build it!? Obviously, money wasn't an issue, so you could have purchased whatever sheet metal you needed through the aftermarket.

It was far from perfect, and in fact the car they found was headed for the scrap yard, but they managed to snag it, and removed all the rust, which left very little of the car

The original body was a very rusty example that was headed for scrap, it would have been a pop can in your pantry by now if they didn't snag it. As for the body, it's fully made from steel, there is no fiberglass on it. Rest assured, no clean examples were killed during this build!
