For me, the screw was tight but rotating the controls around the rivet (thus improving the connection/ground) did the trick. Controls working great now! Thanks for the video post - helped me fix the problem!
Awesome fix, my steering wheel control only worked when braking or going downhill and failed when accelerating or uphill. Logic would tell you it must be a loose contact, or ground. Your video helped make all the sense to DIY repair the control switch back to proper function!
Hi guys after years my steering wheel control worked intermittently. Main problem was that the wheel control will work only when I turned the steering wheel... you get that? If I drive strait won't make the connection. I did, like many of you, remove more than 4 time the steering wheel and disconnect the air bag switch and check all possible connectors even remove the module control to check the clicks you know what I mean? In short, It worked temporary...what I realized is that every time driving street or Fwy I just stick my left fingers down the back plastic that cover the back part of the steering wheel just over the top of the cup to remove the front cover, its around 10-11-12 O'clock, and bring whit a little push, pressure or pry toward myself and at the same time my right fingers set the volume channel or mode. Both actions a the same time and voila!! it works for me. Please apologize my grammar mistakes English is my second language..!
Glad to do it! FYI a few weeks after doing the repair - the controls slowly started to degrade again. I would strongly recommend using some locktite on the screw to keep it from loosening.
Just a quick question, there are couple of clips one black and one white the you had to tighten the Phillips head screw, the white clip where is the connection coming from. After removing the airbag the other day now the connection with the white clip is nowhere to be found
Great Video Tim.. I have 2001 Accord Ex Coupe and quit working too. for about 6 months it would work randomly before completely stopping, cant find any video to repair mine, could it be a fuse? radio (manually) and Cruise Controls all work..Thanks
Chance Greggory I'm not a mechanic, but your symptoms sound similar to what happened with my MDX. Given the similar age I would suspect similar design/similar remedy.
Hi Lane. I'm not a mechanic, but I am pretty handy and good at fixing things in general. I'd say it's possible. Sounds like you've probably got a loose or dirty electrical connection of some sort. I'd recommend following the instructions for removing the steering wheel airbag and then clean and check all of the electrical connections under it. There's a high probability you could find and fix the problem and if not it's a good first step in the process of elimination finding the problem.
Hey thanks so much for the video…my controls are working, but the led lights aren’t working on the steering wheel…I can only assume that they are suppose to come on when the lights are on since I have really never seen them lite up I don’t know for sure…but it just makes it hard to adjust the cruise and radio controls at night when you can’t see what your doing…do you think your fix might also fix my light problem or do you think it’s a fuse problem since they are all not working and if so do you know what fuse it would be and where it’s located…any info would be greatly appreciated…my father-in-law gave me this car after my husband passed away, and then my father-in-law passed away a few months later so I don’t really have anyone to help me with it…It’s a 2006 Acura MDX with 60,000 miles on it…
That explains it then…first of all I just realized it is a 2003 had to go look in the glove box…lol…well that does away with one thing I don’t have to worry about fixing…
I'm guessing you need the code for your stereo after disconnecting the battery. Mine was on a card in the owner's manual. If you don't have that I would call an Acura dealer and give them the VIN - maybe they could give you the code if you don't have the owner's manual/packet.
@@Crashe62 ok I found my code as well in the manual book and thank you for posting this video your more than likely helping allot of people myself included 😉
I recently replaced my steering wheel on this vehicle. in doing so I discovered that the screw I tightened in the video is just screwed into the plastic housing on the back of the steering wheel. I replaced that screw with one I could tighten with a nut and locktite.
Great video, so Tim what is causing the intermittent ground if the screw just connects to plastic? Is it the movement of the bus that makes for the intermittent ground? Stabilizing the bus solves it? I'm looking to tackle this issue and get a new stereo in too in my 2004... a great vehicle!
I think there area several issues at play that revolve around the connection of the buss to the inner metal frame of the steering wheel causing a faulty ground. In my opinion the best long term fix would be to thread the hole in the steering wheel frame that the original screw passes through and replace the original anchoring screw with a new screw that fits the newly threaded hole. A less complicated approach is to replace the original screw with a similar sized screw and nut - running the new screw through the buss and steering wheel frame then the nut; tighten and secure with loctite thread locker. This method better secures the buss, but the connection between the buss and the frame is still susceptible to corrosion/oxidation between the 2 surfaces that are essentially just pressed together via the tension of the nut/screw. Whereas the first solution above is also grounded via the threads of the screw into the steering wheel frame itself creating a much more reliable ground. Also thoroughly research your new stereo - the one I installed would not interface with the car steering wheel controls without a $40 third party controller. I bought and installed the controller and still can't get the steering wheel controls to work with the stereo. Hope this helps. Best of luck.
Thanks for the details and heads up. FYI on aftermarket radio, there is a previously installed clarion already in mine with a PAC brand SWI-Jack universal steering wheel control interface and aside from this hard turn ground issue thing, that was/is still working fine, so I guess some can work. mine is an 04.
After this video my stereo worked for a while, but soon started having symptoms again. Last year I bought a new steering wheel - when I was installing it I discovered the real problem. The screw that I tighten in this video screws into the plastic housing for the back side of the steering wheel and will loosen. You're better off to go to home depot and get as similar sized screw, nut and washers (and probably some locktite) - that would be a more permanent solution. Though the method in this video is very easy and will definitely work in the short term you will have to continue to tighten it periodically.
