Looking forward to seeing them at the BFI here in London at the end of the month! Thanks a lot for posting this. I really wish I could attend your exhibition. It looks amazing.
I saw 2001 in 1968 in Cinerama at a brand new Century 21 Theater. Huge panoramic screen, 70 mm film, three projectors running in sync, and the first ever surround sound system. Stanley allowed only certain theaters in Cinerama to play 2001. The experience blew my mind. Nothing like it anymore.
Things they don't talk about in the interviews I've seen. When the camera follows the tossed bone up into the air, there's a cut to a second shot of the bone. It's not one shot. My impression is that after a number of attempts, that's the best they could do. Another thing is the very abrupt cut they made after the first screening. In the ape sequence. Suddenly you're at the pool of water again, and there's a standoff with lots of yelling. It's a very hard cut. And these guys are never asked if they saw the longer version. We kinda know what's missing..the second space walk length is shortened, the ape sequence is shortened. Another question is having the leopard leap down onto the ape. Any thoughts about how that was done? After the leap, he goes after the ape again.
Keir Dullea really knows how to dominate a conversation. Love to hear what he says but in all the videos I am watching he really thinks highly of his opinion. Dave Bowman all the way!
