For those curious about the US disqualification: They were DQ'd for an improper changeover--according to the timing system, the anchor swimmer jumped in before the third had touched the wall. However, this was challenged by the Americans on the basis of faulty equipment. The touchpads used at the tournament in Fukuoka that year had been subject to malfunctions during the entire eight days of the tournament. The disquailification was initially reversed by the refreee on the basis of video evidence, and the US team reinstated, but the original results were subsequently upheld by the FINA bureau. At a meeting of FINA later in Bangkok, it was decided that the Americans would be granted a second set of gold medals "To avoid any reasonable doubt regarding the result...but without unfairly changing the official results of the race". (Without the DQ, the Americans' time would have been 7:56:53, second behind Australia.)
@Breezy-swims

If I'm not mistaken, that would've also been an American record at the time. Still glad the US got their medals. My coach, Julie, brought that medal to practice and that was so cool.

+Henry Ng a good deal of sporting cultures agree that showboating and celebrating are not what sports are about and have rules to punish such clownish practices. If you want to celebrate your victory, do after the event is over. It's considered rude at the international level as the runners up deserve a minimum of respect because they generally beat the rest of the world to get there.

It's very disrespectful to jump in the water before the other teams have finished. It's also disrespectful to celebrate emphatically when your opponents get disqualified/injured. Overall, a lot of poor sportsmanship shown that day.
@florianmeier3186
@florianmeier3186 3 года назад
Yes, the intense celebrating of German team is bad sportsmanship, too. If you win, not because of your own abilities, but the mistakes of the other, you should take it and celebrate silently. However, disqualification is completely justified. The later arriving swimmers are probably exhausted and maybe also frustrated. Creating additional waves and splashes is not fair.

it actually does have a potential to affect the time of the swimmer that was yet to finish. when a person enters a pool the water rises and it causes ripples and waves, both of which can affect the time of someone swimming. in that way they disadvantaged the swimmer who was still competing Not to mention it's just rude. We won in time but failed in sportsmanship.

Just discovered this tape, I knew all about the race but I had never seen it before since those of us in the USA didn't get a lot of swimming on TV outside of the OG in those days. (In the last 10 yrs or so, the World Championships have been shown here live.) I'm going to add this in, since I don't see a mention of it here in all of the comments, this from the official FINA record book: In accordance with the decision of the FINA Bureau (2001, Bangkok): “To avoid any reasonable doubt regarding the result of the Women’s relay 4x200m Freestyle Final of the 9th FINA World Championships in Fukuoka but without unfairly changing the official results of the race, the Bureau decided to grant a second set of gold medals to the USA team”. The members of the USA team were: Natalie Coughlin, Diana Munz, Cristina Teuscher, J. Hardt (7:58.13).

If you set up a rule, a rule that's existed for decades, that you are disqualified for jumping into the pool before the race ended, then you should be disqualified for doing this. Every member of the Australian team has swum competitively for at least 10 years knowing that rule, its not like it was a surprise. The US team appealed their DQ, and won. They ruled the changeover equipment was faulty. They received a silver medal.

+jboy55 In England, courts talk about the golden rule = the law must be interpreted literally UNLESS it would lead to some repugnance or absurdity or contradiction with the rest of the law. This is a gross injustice to those Australian ladies. It is repugnant. The overriding rules and spirit of the competition is that the winner = the best swimmers on the day = the Australians. This overriding rule has been violated by legalism.
@MsJubjubbird
@MsJubjubbird 9 лет назад
+DasVERMiT That's been changed since. Now GB and the US both shared second spot. Germany got first. I don't know what that's about. I guess America had a leg to stand on if they could prove in the footage they didn't have an early changeover and that it was just poor judgement by the official- because changeover errors are split second things-whereas no one could argue Australia wasn't in the water before they finished.

I'm glad this wasn't at an Olympic event. Imagine loosing Gold for that indiscretion? I do think they shouldn't have jumped in while some swimmers had not even finished the race. It smacks of arrogance and insensitivity. It was Petria Thomas' idea to jump in first. Why did she do that? Anyway, everyone knows the rule now, and the rule is there to encourage athletes to respect their fellow competitors and to allow them the best chance of finishing the race.
@ianraper4304
@ianraper4304 4 года назад
Generally agreed but with a slight correction - in an interview later on (after things had calmed down a bit) Thomas said that one of the reporters wanted a photograph of them all in the water. This is quite okay - provided all the other competitors have completed the race. Unfortunately some of the other competitors were still swimming. Sadly, Thomas admitted that she didn't check to see that this was the case. It was not a case of arrogance or insensitivity although it might seem like that but more a case of thoughtlessness which was unusual given that Thomas and a couple of the others were seasoned campaigners.

There is a sensor on the platform where the next swimmer jumps in from, and also on the wall where the current swimmer touches. The person jumping in left the platform before the current swimmer touched the wall. The timers time down to the millisecond (officially to the hundredth) If you look at it, the person on the platform to be quick has to start jumping in before the other swimmer actually touches the wall. You try to time it to be efficient (normal reaction time is roughly a tenth of a second). The next swimmer broke probably 2 or 3 thousandths of a second too early, and those relay switches are very important to having a good time. There are specifications for the sensors as well, as in they have to register so much force before they trigger. That eliminates are questions about faulty equipment, or a wave being mistaken for a touch. That reason also plays into the Aussie DQ, jumping in changes the conditions for the people still racing, so you're not allowed to jump in until all competitors are finished

well they already won the race. thats what matters, there no denying who was the fastest and the dq doesn't change anything. i feel bad for Britain, its embarrassing to be known as the team that won on a technicality, give them the gold participation medal while you're at it too.

Yes the marathon runner will be disqualified too if he starts running back on the course, disturbing other participants who haven't finished yet. The swimmer who didn't finish before the jumping in was in lane six, agreed. But what if she was in the next lane. The law is about respecting your fellow competitors and their right to give their best performance.

A harsh lesson but rules are rules. I'm sure they'll never do it again
@MarineKingPride

because jumping in causes the water level to raise just a tiny tiny bit, that is going to instantly travel thro the water and cause people who are not finished slower by maybe 0.01 seconds. How can you not disqualify them when they are slowing other's effort.

can u tell me why USA was disqualified what does 'breaking' mean in swimming
@electricmaster23
@electricmaster23 3 года назад
I know this is 11 years late, but breaking simply means entering the pool before you're allowed to. This often happens on a changeover between swimmers, especially when the replacing swimmer mistimes the dive.

How many time we saw the GB winning gold through others team disqualification. Australia and USA deserved the medal with a strong warning never to do that again instead of disqualified them.. Not fair.

it's not a stupid reason, it's against the rules. all petria had to do was look to make sure all the swimmers had finished before jumping in, if anything she was the one who was stupid
