@NDEEZMiata
@NDEEZMiata 11 месяцев назад
For sure. That's really all you want once you get over the fast car bug. Most recent cars are almost completely devoid of emotion/character by comparison. It's almost become software infused rather than mechanical at this point...ie pops and bangs I wish I would have gotten an S2K instead of a first gen BRZ...back then 15-18k bought you one in near showroom condition. I had so much remorse when I took a ride in a friend's S2K with a nice intake and exhaust....the BRZ is so boring and feels so much slower in comparison. Not to mention Subaru quality or lack there of... Have an ND2 Miata now, it's as close as you can get for a modern car. Thing is damn quick on a backroad stock...they aren't slow anymore. lol. Even those are almost too fast for most backroads...speed limits still exist But nothing beats that induction sound and seemingly endless redline of an S2K....wish they weren't so expensive nowadays. I would have loved to pick one up instead of the Miata, but dropping 30-35k on a car that's nearly 20 years old for a daily driver vs 32500 for a 3700 mile 2020 Club with Recaros. Easy choice for me. This seems like a steal for today's S2K market! With some time, money, and love it's going to be a great car. Most S2Ks around that price are probably salvage titles or beat to piss.
@samstedman409
@samstedman409 11 месяцев назад
I’ve been having a lot of trouble deciding whether I want this or a GR86 for my next sports car. I currently own an NB Miata, and while it can show it’s fun character sometimes, it’s also covered in rust and makes a bunch of scary noises. I’m probably one of the only people to say this but I hate my Miata because of that and I don’t think I want another one. I’m trying to sell it now and it’s a nightmare. I know S2000s aren’t the same car at all but I can’t help but see the resemblance, plus it’s going to be like a 25 year old car by the time I can get my hands on one, and like you said they’ll either be beat to piss or be collectible items. GR86 sounds like the way to go, but if I ever drove a nice S2000, I feel like I’d be pretty sad about getting the 86. Ig I just gotta wait and see how Topher compares this car and his 86.
@PhyFK8
@PhyFK8 11 месяцев назад
@@samstedman409 as someone who has owned 7 s2000's and driven GR86 on street, canyon, and track, I can tell you that they are both awesome cars but also very different. Relative to your NB, the s2000 will feel like a very violent and angry version of that car. I found the GR86 to be a better balanced car in terms of handling. Feels better to drive at the limit. But, the GR86 is struggling with reliability because of the RTV issues and Oil starvation on cornering. S2000's have been around for ages so the guess work for reliability mods is done and are just about bullet proof with a few of the right measures

Back in 2000, those headlights were one of the identifying features of the S2000. Was very easy to tell an S2000 at night. You could see it flickering all sorts of rainbow colors as it came towards you from the distance. When it was close enough, you see the massive amounts of light that was on the road as it got closer. As it past and you look back, you see just how wide that flood of light on the road is. This tiny car and what looks like huge wide wings of light on each side as it disappears in your rearview. Today, we have brighter and better lit roads with LED headlights, but back then, nothing else on the road at night was quite like it.

I imagine people typically say such things to make themselves feel better about whatever model they wound up with. Both are great. Fortunately North America and Japan ultimately received both models - people in these markets should buy whatever version appeals the most to them.
@DraegerV1
@DraegerV1 11 месяцев назад
@VirtualGuth you literally said the same thing i did, although a bit more cynical. Thank you?
@VirtualGuth
@VirtualGuth 11 месяцев назад
@@DraegerV1 I've just never bought into the whole AP1 = the better S2000, AP2 = the better car thing. Those looking into buying a S2000 should focus on what aspects of the various versions they value most and shop accordingly. Those who have a limited budget obviously should buy what they can afford and know that every version of the S2000 is capable of racking up a lot of miles when properly maintained. S2000's in any form as they came from Honda offer plenty of fun for those who enjoy spending time at the upper end of the RPM range. It's also worth noting that as not everyone enjoys such cars, the S2000 definitely isn't for everyone.
@DraegerV1
@DraegerV1 11 месяцев назад
@VirtualGuth logical explanation. I just think its cool that we do have the AP1 and AP2. More hardcore or less hardcore. Like, the S2000 is already an amazing car, and the fact that we have 2 versions to pick from is awesome. I still stand by the saying above. The AP1 is noticeably more edgy, while the AP2 is a bit more "daily friendly.'' Cant go wrong with either.

Congrats with the S2000 !!! I own a 2002 S2K since 2010. Bought with about 80000km on it and now it has 190000km and i still love this car so much. If i sell it, i will surely regret it. As all car enthousiasts, i'am looking for another sportscar now and then and i can sell my S2K to raise my budget, but that is not a good idea. Better buy something cheaper as a extra fun car and keep the S2K. I must say that my S2K is not my daily car, i only drive it as a weekend/summer car. As a daily and only car it wouldn't be my car. It is always noisy, you have to work for speed because it needs high reving. Driving in snow and rain can be very tricky and with the roof up, the blind spots behind are BIG. BUT!!! If you drive it on a sunny day with the roof down on a twisty road, everything falls in place and it is a dream!❤ Greetings from the Netherlands

Vibration on decel might be “clutch buzz”, harmless but annoying. And you do not have to put an intake on it, most of them perform worse than the OEM one and IMO sound worse. It’s fun for a little (take the cover off and drive to simulate one) but it is a much more balanced and pleasing sound when it’s comparably loud to the exhaust vs being the only thing you can hear.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 11 месяцев назад
Airbox lid off definitely reduces power, but certainly good for a bit of fun to see what it would be like with a loud intake! I think is a channel on here on RU-vid that discusses an airbox mod they usually do, which does increase power a little bit on their dyno? (LHT Performance, though I see in the comments above that LHT Performance are controversial!) As you say, many aftermarket intakes are worse than the stock intake (likewise for many aftermarket headers).
@KirkwoodImaging
@KirkwoodImaging 11 месяцев назад
@@TassieLorenzo I love LHT Performance but that particular test wasn't well controlled, the dyno pull that they did was after a tune and not like for like. I think I also disagree with some of their findings/instincts. The chambers are there to combat resonances throughout the rev range and the little diverter they removed along with those chambers probably harmed more than helped performance.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 11 месяцев назад
@@KirkwoodImaging Those are some good points! It occurred to me that Mugen are usually pretty good at designing OEM+ stuff, so I had a look at what the Mugen intake for the S2000 looks like. It seems further removed from the stock design than their EP3/DC5 or FN2 or FD2 Type R offerings. Regarding the FN2 airbox, there was a divider/chamber inside the bottom half of stock FN2 air box which I honestly don't know why it was there, so I removed it (it seems like it would block off 20% of the air filter area and I can only imagine it's there to reduce losses on part throttle during highway cruising or to improve part throttle response or part throttle torque?). I removed the turning vanes from both halves (as many people do) but felt the throttle response was worse, so reinstalled a stock top half with the turning vanes (which look like they would be at 90 degrees to the flow, but of course the flow is already turning around the 180 degree bend so it's more like 45 degrees -- I never removed the vanes that were in line with the flow on either half, as I can't see how they can be anything other than useful for keeping the flow aligned) and that seemed to put the throttle response back to normal. (I have a stock bottom half I could put back in too, but have left it as is, as it seems good as is, I dunno. It definitely doesn't seem worse in terms of performance -- maybe highway fuel economy is worse!) I believe the Mugen air box for the FN2 is like the stock one, but enlarged and with (I believe) no turning vanes inside nor that divider either. So not too dissimilar from somebody having removed all the gubbins from inside the stock airbox. "The chambers are there to combat resonances throughout the rev range" Do you think those resonances need to be accounted for, for performance reasons or only for acoustics? The FN2's stock intake tract has a Helmholtz resonator chamber branched off from it behind the front bumper, which AFAIK is only for acoustics rather than performance. The Mugen intake includes an air scoop which does away with the resonator. (Apparently using the air scoop and doing away with the stock resonator makes VTEC crossover sound less pronounced.)

I paid 23k USD and my friends thought I was crazy as you could buy older models for $15k. This one was like brand new. A year later I was washing the car and someone pulled up in a 1997 NSX an offered me 29k on the spot. One more thing worth noting: The S-series of cars from Honda remain the only purpose-built sports cars that the company has ever produced (as the NSX slotted more into the Supercar category at the time). It seems highly unlikely that Honda will ever produce another car like this powered by an internal combustion engine, let alone a naturally aspirated one. Take good care of your S2K as it is only going to become more rare over time. Should you choose to do any modifications, hopefully they'll be reversible (and hang on to those original parts).

Absolutely beauty congratulations! Can’t wait for the restoration videos and modifications. Whoever didn’t the paint blend job on that passenger side door might need to give it another try. 😂

Congrats on the s2000! - you guys need the soft stop straps by modifry (business is closing, so order up), without this, you could rip your soft top. - no steering wheel adjustment on any s2000 year.

Fun. If you got it for a good price, consider a nice repaint. Do that, repair the upholstery and top and you’ll feel like you have a brand new S2000!

Congrats on the purchase. Makes sure to do the AP1 fixes like ap2 retainers & keepers and also the oil jet bolts. I'd also replace the tct with a billman/blox unit while you're in there. Besides that, keep it oiled and you're good to go!

Congratulations on what looks like a decent deal in today’s s2000 market (same I paid for my one owner ’00 with 50k ten years ago). I occasionally consider replacing mine with something more modern, then I take it for a drive and the thought fades. The vibration you feel when decelerating may be clutch buzz.
@TheTopher
@TheTopher 11 месяцев назад
It’s understandable why values have gone up so much! It’s one of the best drivers cars ever made. Vibration is definitely clutch buzz, only on deceleration and stops when lightly pressing on the clutch pedal. It’s getting better though with more driving 👍👍

Bro, take it to a specialist because it’s going to have some stuff. I got mine from a first owner and it had a ton of stuff needed for repairs. Do a valve adjustment, swap the retainers, make sure you swap the engine mounts. Change the TCT out of caution. Rebuild the shifter because that’ll make a huge difference. If the clutch is stiffer than finger-press firm, look to see if the clutch master is leaking. Both of those are indicators that your clutch is going. I can go on, but congrats!!! Great cars. Put Ohlins on it because it’ll change the car’s handling entirely.
@mediocreman2
@mediocreman2 11 месяцев назад
AP1's don't really have TCT issues. No need to change it preventatively. Also no need to change retainers if they're in good shape and you don't plan on mechanically over revving the car. Valve adjustment is good though, but even then they don't creep very much. But since you're in there already you can do the retainers. Stock suspension is actually nearly as good as Ohlins. But maybe your suspension was worn out. But yes the clutch master can go, and it's a good idea to lubricate the shifter and get new OEM bushings. People mistreat these cars then have more issues that they then blame on the car.
