Its unreal how so many self righteous people talk shit about this car when there's people driving 20 yr old corollas, he paid 10K for it and HE is happy with it, what is there to make fun of this guy about? It amazes me how so many people just cant resist the urge to put others down to make themselves feel better.

Bunch of broke ass haters fuck em 99 percent will never own shit
I have such a soft spot for the 3.4 liter 996 Carreras. So much of Porsche 911 history has been appealing to enthusiasts with more flares and wings and vents, and yeah of course I love me some 964 Turbo Ss and 993 Carrera RS 3.8s and 930s and all that jazz...but as much as the 996 cribbed the 986 componentry, I felt the slim fender look was a harkening back to the original 911. Just a slippery shape that was very clean, and the way they're aging, to my eyes, is proving that it was a good design. A 1999 911 that's well kept doesn't look 16 years old in terms of design.
+Euphorica I agree that lots of people talk shit about things they do not on, this is the internet after all. Having said that class action law suit don't come out of nowhere. And Porsche has been sued in such as suit for 2001 to 2005 models using the M96 engine. That is fact. It's one of the things that kept me from buying a Porsche from that generation, because you can't tell if an engine without IMS upgrade has caused damage already. Or can you?
Do a good pre-purchase inspection and replace the IMS and RMS if you have no records. Problem solved, it's not an issue then. If someone is looking to purchase a 996 and does not have the means to get this done, they need not be looking to purchase this car.
A PPI won't involve inspecting the IMS as that is an engine out job. So you could end up with a car that has already had engine damage sustained. Or is there a way to tell even in its early stages? A Porsche shop advised me that you sometimes can tell from the oil (material) but if somebody is dishonest and does and oil change before the sale there's no way to diagnose this. If you know otherwise please share.
I love the 996, it's honestly my favorite 911. I love the luscious curves, rear vents and long bar taillight design of the 996, such a beautiful clean design.
Fantastic wheels on that 996, I love them! I like the 996, I don't understand the big hate on it. Here in Europe you can get a pre-facelifted C2 or C4 for roughly 15-20k euros with max 150k kms. Nices cars and the cheapest way to drive a 911
I love that people hate them like they do, AND now we have the IMA going at it as well. All in all, most people still forget this is a Porsche. I am all for the plummeting value, because it'll allow more people like this kid to experience a car they generally would not afford. You can't get much for 10k...and a 996 with a manual box is certainly worth owning at that price.
I wanted to give a LOUD THANK YOU to LN Engineering and Flat 6 Innovations for returning us a much more reliable and the most affordable 911 you can currently buy. While no Porsche will ever be 100% problem free, their great work contributed to the 996 (and early boxters) getting a second look and new life. When everyone catches on, I'll be willing to bet prices go up.
I recently purchased a 99 Carrera convertible w a 6 speed manual for 30k miles for $18k I love it it's still tight as new and a blast to drive I love it!
alexlam24 no it was not replaced and I haven't really got around to it it's probably going to be 1500$ but all together great car gives me no problems love it
A couple of years ago, one of my dad's friends divorced his wife of 30+ years, bought a new Boxster, and started dating a girl 15 years younger than him. A few weeks after his friend got his Boxster, my dad bought a 996 with 35k miles for 19K. I think he spent another 3K on the IMS retrofit, clutch and brakes. His friend came over with his girlfriend to check it out. The first thing the girl said when she got out of the car and saw my dad's 911 was "he has a real Porsche." He no longer has the girl, but he is still making payments on the Boxster.
ims failure rates are between 1 and 8 percent. Too high, but not high enough for everyone to shit on them. Personally i plan to replace mine when i do the clutch, simple as that.
Thanks, there are great cars. To many wanna bees, non drivers, non owners just repeat what they hear or read on the internet with no real owner experience.
If you put smaller tires and wheels you will feel a big difference in the performance of the car. In my opinion 295 tires and 19" wheels are to big for this car. Anyway for that amount of money this guy has bought himself a really nice car.
+Doogie Spence simple supply and demand: the 996 was the most sold Porsche in history with 170.000 Cars. So there's probably more 996 Porsches on the market than People wanting to have it. The "horrible" front lights and first water cooled Engine make it a bad choice for Porsche enthusiasts. That's why the price dropped over the time..
+TechStyle so only why Android has ~70% of the Smartphone market (sorry for Bad English) and Apple around 20%, this means to you that Android is the more commercially successful? (Which is according to numbers actually the other way round the Apple store is generating more money than google play store) Yes the first words on Google say that the 997 was the most commercially successful but this is because of intelligent selling and rising prices of a 911 www.total911.com/the-six-most-popular-porsche-911s-of-all-time/ shows it roughly as well I only said that the 996 is the most sold generation of 911 and this many cars means more cars than people wanting to own one adding up to the 996 not being an young/old timer yet, as well.
Who does this guy think he is? His comments show he is not exactly on top of his game. Typical unfounded 996 mocking, amplified hearsay of hearsay. He mocks the brakes even if he doesn't go very fast and no way near the braking limit. Talk guy!
The one to try and which is surprisingly great among the non GT 996s is the 40th anniversary. Well underrated 345bhp engine and almost as raw and fast as a GT3 on the road ... And some have modified it as GT3 rivalling race cars. Awesome cars and really cheap.
Nice to see an expensive car like that with high miles! Awesome video, and funny comments too I hope someone on here in California has a Volvo V40 (the old ones from 2001-2004) and/or a Matrix XRS/Vibe GT with that 2ZZ.
I got an AMG that's 2013 e63 Biturbo modified by Weistec after having stock performance package from AMG but I know you already did a segment on the preface lift Biturbo m157 from Weistec and I'd like to see my new 2015 E63 designo type S be tested by you and I'm in SoCal in Orange County. Completely different beast compared to my Rwd the awd system hooks up much better barely any tire squeal also it's been modified and I think it be great for the canyons if you're interested let me know. I know the previous post was a guy from Canada with the cls63. So for the AMG fans it might be great thing to get your opinion of the car and see how it feels. Thanks again Sean
Yay! about to pull the trigger on this exact model. Of course I need to get rid of a car first. I hate the steering wheel position, and it doesn't move up/ down. I get why... but, still.
A full-blooded porsche, with porsche feel, that makes you look and feel expensive as hell, all at a price that can reasonably be expected to end up in the parking lot of a high school - ask me how I know. I am in love.
TheSmokingTire Matt is there a release schedule for these videos? I'm really enjoying them but I'm constantly checking RU-vid for an upload and I hate the disappointment when there is not anything new.
Christopher Garcia most of the time one takes go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This one went up on a friday because I'm in Dubai working on /DRIVE, and with the very long work days combined with the time change, I just couldn't get it done.
hey Matt having driven 911's extensively, do you prefer the air cooled or water cooled? which generation is your favourite? great video by the way and keep up the good work!
I think the 997 is just about as good as the 911 got. Combination of modern, yet relatively spartan interior, the absolute right size for a 911, and options for everyone. I love the vintage stuff for its durability and mechanical feel, too. Any proper car collection should probably have one of each :)
When are you coming to NJ? I'm putting a smaller turbo to replace my current turbo on my Subaru and i feel like you should drive it. It should make 450 ish when all is said and done. Built motor, built heads, brembos, suspension work and more.
great video, watched it a few times before buying my 996.2 3.6l Targa. interesting it looks lower than stock yet there no A/M springs listed in the equipment list ?
Hi, I am getting my 997 S project back this week. I built it from scratch and would love for you to drive it through the canyon. When is the next time people can meet you in the canyon? Oh my car has 249000 miles on the odometer!
Can you please tell me more about your wheels? size/offset/price/tyres? I love them and I want some too. How did you lower it so much and how did lowering it/the wheels effect the feel of the car? Cheers.
TheSmokingTire The 996 isn't the greatest 911, but it's still a 911, not some 924/944. For $10k it's a steal! If the M96 engine grenades on you, you can swap in a LSX engine (NOT RENEGADE) and the car will be the perfect 911. Cheap, powerful & easy to maintain. Yeah, it's not a Porsche engine, but it's smaller & lighter while making more power. The ONLY real gripe I have about the car, is the front bumper needs to be swapped to a 997's then it'll be even better.
Mulholland Highway, Agoura Hills near Malibu. Between Cornell Road and Kanan Road. Known as the 'Snake' by motorcyclists or the 'Rock Store Climb' by cyclists. Go early like in the video or on a weekday. The road gets crowded by noon by drivers and motorcyclists trying the canyon.
The 996 is a great car...I liked mine and loved that noise! Mine had a few issues...The big issue was a devastating rod failure or broken rod bolt ( likely)... spun and nearly wrecked the car in the process! Was fixed under warranty, but one look at the tiny rod bolts took it from a fun track day car to a grocer getter! I would not rev the hell out of the motor! The rear main seal also let go a couple of times..not a huge deal ($2,500.00), but a pain. After doing some homework I decided to sell the car...Though I still kind of miss it a 100,000 mile 996 is something I would not own....trust me...the big parts are brutally expensive! Also...the factory 15,000 mile oil change recommendation is BS!
I remember when the 993's were bottom money and an entry level Porsche, for sure the 996's have bottomed out and will go the same way, Chris's 996 is probably as rough as arse holes cosmetically though I imagine it's mechanically sound and it was a customers car where he works.
Well... As for what you can get for 10 grand... You could get a very nice E36 M3, maybe even a beat up E46 M3... Not as flashy, but same hp. If it wasn't for the US models, the E36 M3 I think has over 300hp... I thought it was 320...
My friend just got a 2005 330xi with 120k on it for $7k TTL. I was like what!!!! How do i piss all the deals. Instead I'm about to be way over my head into a project that I could never get my money back out of. Probly not half. But it'll be a super cool car to me. Probly never could find the right buyer to sell it to.
TheSmokingTire Yeah, did realise how underpowered the US M3s are, such a shame. They're essentially slightly tweaked 328is with different suspension. Like I said, I think the Euro ones have 320 hp or so. In the case of the Euro M3s, performance wise, I think they compare well with that 300hp 911 from the video. Porsche looks far more flashy though. Hoping you get to test any E36 on here soon, especially cause I own a 318is and love it to bits :)
Every time he points out a cool car going the other direction I look at the corners to catch a glimpse of it in the mirrors. There are no mirrors in the video.
996 are very reliable, with clutch, ims,RMS done! Maybe a upgraded water pump if you like. other than that, typical Porsche maintanence and ugly headlights and front end, but once you are inside it's still a 911. Wait, $10k for a beat 914 or 944? Matt, do your homework those cars you named for the exception of certain models, holding their value and worth a lot more than a 996 911 decreasing in value daily. I'd take and 89 944 Turbo S over a 99-01 911 any day. DIFFERENT strokes for different folks! That's why I own classic 911's .
lmao who the hell has an N/A evo. the only reason anyone buys one of those is to tune the shit out of the thing. I hope the Evo you filmed has big HP numbers.
The 996s look different, not bad, different. I find they're less cringe-worthy if you think about it as being a more separate entity. It was Porsche trying to keep up with the times and it worked, and they learned from it to make the 997.
I own a 2010 Cayman S and the brakes are sooo shit! It will break in a straight line and they won't fade, but the pedal feel is like a treading on a sponge!
zum If you mean the new one, we've already done two BRZ's and would only do another if it had something very unique about it. If you mean the old one, we just did a film with one in New Zealand and it was awesome. Should be up sometime in March
