I like how with the Luis Gonzalez homer in game 1 and the Matt Williams homer in game 2 the Yankees outfielders barely even moved because they knew it was gone off the bat. Both of those home run balls were crushed!
I am a Diamondbacks fan. I’ll never forget the sinking feeling when Soriano hit that homer in game 7. I knew Rivera was coming in for the 6-out save. Luckily the Diamondbacks came back and won it.
I vividly remember this as a 10 year old Arizona girl. Every single game was an event at our house, parents friends over watching on our 90s giant-box big screen TV. It was so exciting.
I was 9 years old, chilling on the floor of my uncles place. He had invited family & friends over for game 7.I feel ya on that "giant box screen TV" haha It amazing and special having this memory as a kid. The Diamondbacks gave me a pure happy moment in my life as a kid. I love my D-Backs!Especially when they wore that Coppers Town threads in game 7!!!
This was the most bittersweet and romantic World Series for New Yorkers, but what the Yankees did on those fateful three nights in the Bronx were totally worth it. For three nights, the city's spirit came back following 9/11.
Ikr…Im still tight that they kept getting smacked around by the d-backs…how are you down 14 runs only in the 4th inning of game 6😞The d-backs were playing like they were sign stealing someone check for whistles please lol
You don't see baseball like this anymore, the hustle by both teams were amazing. They played hard for every hit, pitch, base running and fielding. The ones that was able to witness this series were very grateful.
This series was never going to end in yankee stadium. Arizona could’ve played all 7 games in yankee stadium and the ghosts of New York would not have allowed a loss in New York during that World Series after 9/11
@@3rdMed1 Arizona hasn’t been relevant since 2001 so no it hasn’t. The thing that lives rent free in my head is Mo blowing two saves to the red Sox in 04. That’s what keeps me up at night
@@3rdMed1 you’re a fucking low life dude. Get some help. You’re the type of kid who would’ve gotten the shit beat out of him at my high school. You 05s and later are so unappreciative of the mushy gushy lives you live
One of the best World Series ever. Mostly because the Yankees lost. And also the way they lost with Rivera on the mound blowing it in the bottom corner of the 9th. In the end, all the stars on both teams were taking PEDs, so none of it really matters. But at least you get to see the Yankees lose on the biggest stage.
@@chriscroke718i believe the only true baseball fans that have been consistent are the yankees, red sox, dodgers because their clubs spend on whatever it takes to win
As a huge Yankee fan this was the best world series I can remember at 51 years old. Every single game was more dramatic than the next. Too bad the Yankees lost lol
In the games played in Phoenix in this series, I like how when a Diamondbacks player hit a homer the fireworks they set off coincided with how many runs scored. For instance, on the Matt Williams 3-run homer in game 2 there were 3 blasts of fireworks set off. After Craig Counsell’s solo shot in game 1, they set off the fireworks once.
The World Series that will forever be remembered as the Series that helped heal America - and the world for that matter - following 9/11. Obviously the world was shattered following the events on 9/11 and even as the World Series got underway we all were still feeling the aftermath of the tragedy( no matter where you were in the world, 9/11 had such a terrible and traumatic effect on all of us )more than a month later. You just don't recover so quickly after an event like that. But in a way, thank goodness the Yankees & D-Backs thrilled the hell out of us for those couple of weeks in later-October & early-November. The D-Backs looked like they would blow the doors off the Yankees at the outset( I picked the D-Backs over the Yankees in 6 games before it started )but when the Yankees won those 3 dramatic games all at home it almost seemed like 'Mystique & Aura' would again guide the Yanks to another championship. Then the D-Backs clobbered the Yanks in Game 6 & in a way that was a good thing because by the 6th inning we all knew this was headed for Game 7, an epic conclusion to the Series. And the Emmy Awards that year also got pushed back due to 9/11 and America's response to the terrorist attacks so it wound up being Game 7 & The Emmys on the same night in a 'ratings battle' on TV. D-Backs scored 1st, Yanks took back the lead late, looked for sure like another Yankees championship especially with Rivera on the mound in the 9th aka 'Mr. Automatic'. I said to myself before the bottom of the 9th 'Man, if the D-Backs can just get a couple guys on base, they've got a shot!' And sure enough....they rallied & won in perhaps the most exciting fashion possible. :-) Can you believe it's almost been 20 years since this Series....and fans still remember it as one of the BEST World Series ever. Granted, the D-Backs outhit and outscored the Yankees by a ton yet those 'pesky' Yankees & their championship pedigree still made a Series out of it. And the D-Backs were an 'expansion' team but had a lineup loaded with veteran players who'd been around and came up short on other teams, but in '01 they came together and captured a World Series classic for the ages. :-)
I was trying to remember the 9/11 World Series, so I looked this video up. I forgot what great and wild series it was. What a brutal game 6 for the Yanks, but what an uplifting series at the same time. I remember I was very glad they went ahead with it. What happened to Arizona?? This was their highest moment.
Ownership and mismanagement issues. As an Arizonian, I was too young to remember this series, but I’m beyond grateful for it. It’s the only highlight we’ve had in our existence. we got there again last year, we didn’t win but it still was special.
Imho the managers of this WS are unfairly criticized for some of their decisions in the series. A lot of people treat Brenly's decisions with Kim as complete idiocy; since Kim is mostly remembered for these blown saves it seems obvious in retrospect. But heading into the WS, Kim was BY FAR the DBacks' best reliever, and the rest of the bullpen was a dumpster fire. Plus, Kim had been a starter in Korea and was more than capable of high pitch counts. Brenly's decisions to bring in Kim and leave him in for long stretches makes sense when you realize how little faith Brenly deservedly had in anyone else. Torre is often second-guessed for bringing the infield in against Gonzo. Again, this is a Monday Morning QB take. Unless Torre had a crystal ball, it made much more sense to play the infield in and stop the winning run at all costs, especially given Rivera's ability to induce weak ground balls.
I lived this 23 years ago while still a resident of Arizona. One of the best World Series I'd seen. I'm still a fan of the DBacks and can honestly say that I was as shocked as ya'll that they made the WS again last year. They have a solid offense and defense, but the bullpen is bull pucky. Being in a division with the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants is daunting, I hope they surprise me again this year.
As a Yankee fan we won this World Series I don’t care what happened in game seven just the fact that 9/11 just happened and the Yankees played so hard and all those dramatic homeruns and hits the excitement was never higher and I couldn’t be more proud of my Yankees
Coming from a Yankee fan, it’s utterly amazing how they were even in a situation to close out the game and win a World Series. You can see how injuries and the 9/11 emotions took a toll on them. But the D’backs were just a better team that year. With all considered, best World Series ever.
It was all part of that Yankee aura that existed up until Rivera blew the save...it would have the most unlikely title the Yankees had ever won and that includes 1996. Got kicked around the entire series minus ~6 combined innings in 7 games. A win in Game 7 would have been the icing on the bullshit cake.
If I could travel back in time...I would purchase a ticket to game 7 of the 2001 World Series!I would love to witness this game live cheering with fans of my D-Backs ball club!I was 9 years old sitting on ground at my uncles house watching game 7 :)This Diamondback team with the coppers town threads gives me this warm feeling in my heart.God damn I love my Diamondbacks.
I have seen the Suns in the NBA finals twice. The Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl. And they wete great series. But we came up short. The Diamondbacks won it all in 2001. Where was I at that point in time? I was in NYC on a business trip. Classic.
I still can’t believe the Diamondbacks beat my Yankees with Rivera on the mound.Certainly when Rivera was on the mound I always felt as a Yankees fan that the Yankees will always win.I always was very confident on the Yankees,I was 13 years at the time and I tell ya I was pretty heart broken I wanted to cry
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a discussion or disagreement amongst the Yankees before that last at bat as to whether the infield should be drawn in or left back. Had Jeter been playing back he would have caught that soft liner. Still remember how great that series was. I'm a lifetime Red Sox fan and that year was the only year I ever rooted for the Yankees.
@@Boudica234what killed me is the bunt where Rivera fielded it and threw it to 3rd and got the runner out but Scott Brosius sat there with a thumb up his ass and didn’t realize he had plenty of time to throw to 1st and get the double play. This was before the diamond backs even tied the game
@bobbyjohnson9409 I didn't realize they had a chance for a double play on that bunt. The batter would have to be very slow (or late) to get doubled up like that.
As a baseball fan, I remember thinking during the 2001 season just how wicked it was for a team to have Johnson and Schilling on the same team. New York nearly beat them. It would have been 5 out of 6.
Evan Bell Only their third season !! team first debuted in 1999. Back then the team who began their 4th season were the 1998 Devil Rays don’t get confused. Next time, take some time to do a little bit of research before you reply. 🤫😉
