Just wanted to say this video is awesome. I had to change my coolant bypass hose. And this video is clutch af bc that’s literally the last hose you undid before your knock censors. Thank man video gives you the run down on changing half of anything I’ve replaced

I would also add to consider replacing the radiator hoses while you’re way deep in there... thank you for sharing, I have a Highlander with 298000 mls thats gonna need the sensors replaced....you shown me the way 👏👏👏😎🌺🌈🤙🏽

I want to thank Chris again I helped my buddy do this and probably saved him 1 thousand dollars. I would highly recommend however that you find the proper torque specs for the manifold bolts.Drain some of the coolant so you do not get any into the cylinders . Use a vacuum cleaner to clean up all the dirt to keep it out of the cylinders. and finally yes change both sensors( they are identical and have the same life expectancy) and the wiring harness and the air/fuel sensor because you don't want to do this again . The older the car is the more fragile /brittle the wiring harnesses /hoses/ plastic pcs. become and you should pay close attention to these as you put everything back together because just disturbing them can be enough to cause them to fail and you do want the car to start after all this.

Great video! Might I suggest to drain the entire coolant system beforehand? The last thing you need is to get antifreeze into the intake. Doesn't take that much time and it'll save you a buncha headache if you accidentally dump some coolant into those ports.

@@dragosutalo579 Good idea. When I was a young mechanic I dropped a bolt down the distributor hole on a V-8 engine and had to pull the oil pan to get it out. Since then I always plug every upward facing opening with a piece of cloth or paper towel. In all the time since then I've never had a repeat experience where I've accidentally dropped something down inside of an engine.

I just made this mistake. A bit of coolant went in but the valves are fully closed. So nothing went inside. I padded it dry as best I could but there’s ever so slightly coolant in there. Am I still screwed?

Chris thanks a million! So I am currently changing my knock sensor on my 2006 Sienna is the motor in the video similar? The same? There are other sensors @15:03 at the bases of the heads what do those do and how are they removed I broke one.... Thanks

Hi Chris. I followed your instructions, and put everything back together. Upon startup, there is a fuel odor from under the hood. If I let it run a minute, white smoke starts to come up from under the throttle body. Any ideas why this would occur? I just turned it off because I didn't want to start an engine fire. Thanks.

Nice helpful vid. Good steady camera work too. I hear many people don't even bother putting that one back plenum bolt on. Then if they have to take it off again later, that's one step they don't need.

You should always remove the negative battery terminal first before the positive one or just the negative one if you are not taking the battery out. If you try removing the positive one first and the wrench hits ground anywhere you will short the battery out. But if you remove the negative one first and the wrench hits ground anywhere nothing will happen. The same thing applies when reconnecting the terminals - positive one goes on first before the negative one.

@@journeycabral5710 Car batteries are only 12 volts so you can't get an electric shock from one even if you touch both the negative and positive terminals at the same time. The primary hazard with a car battery is that it can deliver a lot of current if you short it out. That's why you have to be very careful with metal tools around car batteries. If you accidentally get a wrench across a car battery it will create a huge spark and the wrench could start to get very hot and if it stays like that too long the battery could possibly explode. That's why you always take the negative terminal off first so if the positive terminal or anything connected to it touches the body of the car nothing will happen.

Thanks for the video. I have a lexus es300. At 2:55 I noticed you removed a sensor form the vacuum solinoid. I am not seeing such a sensor in my es300. The socket is there for it. What does this mean for my car. Thanks

Wow, very fast, very instructional. Thx A Lot!! I have the previous ES300 model with a knock sensor code on right now. And boy do these have similar if not the same engine. I'm surprised how some ppl have this issue already tho. I thought it was a worn out issue. I have 230,000miles on mine and first time i EVER seen my check engine light turn on in 4years of owning this car!! Lol.. But, anyways very Good video thank you.

Chris S , sorry i have a question i forgot to ask. Like i said i have the code for the knock sensor p0330, which is bank 2 i believe it was... But i keep seeing everyone is saying to go ahead and replace the other sensor too. Should i? And if so, do you know if they are the same part number by any chance? Sorry.

On my car, the knock sensors are the same part numbers for banks 1 and 2. The reason everyone says to change them both is just so you don't have to open the top of the motor again. It is not mandatory if there is nothing wrong with it. These knock sensors usually last a long time and do not become faulty quickly and most even last the life of the car according to the research I've done. If you can find an OEM knock sensor for cheap and you have the money, then I would change them both, but if not, then just ride it out and hope the other one does not go bad. Whatever you do, do not put the cheap, off brand knock sensors on this car. I can almost guarantee that you will end up changing it again very soon after replacing it, if it even works at all. I would definitely recommend changing the harness though!

Chris like your education video on how to change the knock sensor... the only thing I would warn anyone of doing this is to use the 9/16 bolt removal on the plenum as the test point... meaning if you CANNOT get this "Tough One OFF" then stop and go no further...!!! I know you are not endorsing any manufactures but Would you tell what or where you can get the "angle ratchet wrench" you use to even get to this fastener off? I've tried almost everything I could find at Lowes, Home Depot, and Harbor Freight in trying to get to this fastener...

I did the A/F sensor in 15 minutes going under the car using only ramps for front wheels. Easy . You have to go behind the engine . With the 1/2 inch Pry bar extention . Some people remove the driver side rim and tire off the car and the small splash guard behind that wheel and go in trough the side .use a Half inch Rachet attached to a long prybar extention . With the Ssensor socket. . There is a sensor socket for the 3/8 rachet . Dont get that one . Get the one for the 1/2 inch . For more strengh as you will have to pry it loose. I edit to say this : ON ALL THESE SENSORS , MAKE SURE YOU USED THE BRAND DENSO . USE DENSO ONLY . AS THESE LEXUS DONT LIKE OTHER BRANDS. AND WILL MALFUNCTION AGAIN. USE DENSO ONLY . When doing knock sensors Make sure your replace the 3 spark plugs in the rear of engine and coil boots . Do it so that you dont have to take it apart again when a spark plug goes out or something . Do it now while its all taken appart. Do your PCV valve Aswell . You dont want to keep taking this engine apart all the time its alot of work . Replace EVERYTHING you can on this one single Job . Always Remember to Tape off them holes man . To.prevent anything going in .! Holly cow man .cover those holes. If you drop a screw in the hole man you got problems. Do rinse the driveway or road down with some water; get that coolant out of there. Otherwise an animal will lick it up and die from it. Happens all the time. Anyway, thanks for a great video. I'll be ready if this ever happens to me. I've removed the plenum to do the valve cover gaskets (damn that wire harness!) but haven't had to pull the lower manifold yet. Good call on that back left plenum bolt too. I have a cheapo flex-head 3/8" wrench that I can barely squeeze back there with a socket on it and fit on that bolt head (and I do mean BARELY!!)

Thank you. Especially for the detailed info on locations and what type of tool to use. Those are a lot of steps. I kept waiting for you to get to the part and you did this before? I'm amazed. Did you get this done in the time that it took to record this video? The Toyota dealership says I should replace all of these parts-both Knock Sensors, Knock Sensor Wire Harness, Intake Gasket, Intake Platinum Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket, PCV Valve and the Thermostat and ORing. In your opinion, is it worth replacing all of these parts for a 1999 ES300? When you say we won't be able to remove the plenum, if this is the case, then what should we do to get to the Knock Sensors? Can we get to the Knock Sensors w/o taking the plenum completely off, like to move it to the side like you did other parts?

Vanessa Sampson Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. I'm glad it was helpful for you. When you go to a dealership the mechanics are trained to fix everything by their book. When you follow the dealership procedures, it sometimes makes you perform steps that you may not always have to do when you are doing a repair on your own. The parts at dealerships are usually super expensive and the mechanics hourly rates are through the roof. This video is only meant to be used as a guide, but if you watch the whole thing and do what I did... it should work out well for you. :)

First of all, thank you for posting a very instructive video. I have a question. At 11:31, the part you removed (called plantum?) has a white part and black part. Can you separate those two parts to simply the whole process a bit? I have a 2001 lexus with error code p0330 (bank 2 knock sensor ). I got a quote for $500 for replacing it. I am seriously thinking about doing it myself.

You can separate the two parts, but it will not make the job easier. that part will just be in your way later.

I just replaced my knock sensors on my V6 camry, it was not that hard just lot of photos and labelling. There is a few points that i was to share which i found critical and useful. I hope it will help the next person that might replace the knock sensor on this type of engine. Make sure you drain all of the coolant, that is coolant in the radiator, front and rear engine block ( yes! There are drain two drain plugs one at the front of the engine and one at the rear). If you dont drain all of the coolant it might leak into your cylinder when you lift in the cylinder block (shown in the video) Unless you have bought a new coolant bypass hose, there is no need to take that out off to access the knock sensor. I replaced mine without taking the hose off. Make sure you torque them to the right spec! Also there is no need to remove the fuel injectors, it can be left on to the cylinder block p and move aside (one less thing to unbolt)

There is only 1 harness for the 2 sensors. It is Y shaped.

Yes, I did reuse the hex head bolts. They were in perfect condition and did not need to be replaced. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the torque specs because I made this video so long ago. Do a Google search, I'm pretty sure that's what I did.

Great video. How you know your knock sensor was bad? Like the engine light was on or wierd sound or the car feel wierd?

camilo11315 The engine light eventually came on a few days after the car was running weird. The car had barely any acceleration and my gas mileage was low as well. The knock sensor controls the timing of the engine so when it went bad, I believe it went into what is called, "limp home mode." This prevents you from damaging your engine.

It took about an hour to an hour and a half the first time. After doing it a few times now I can do the entire thing in about 40-45 minutes with the correct tools. This video is shortened to make it easier to watch and understand.

Andrew Rodgers So I looked in to this question and the reservoir looking container is actually part of the engines vacuum system. Don't try and fill it with any liquid lol.

Chris, It sure helped a lot to get an idea of kind of job you're facing & prepare yourself. . I still find of kind of "SICK" to place the sensors where they have...do you have to replace both knock sensors even if one tests fine? my part store charges $140.- ea for 97 avalon. Thanks a lot again!

+Sid G. amazon.com sells sensors (brand new) for as cheap as $40. I don't know how much your particular sensor is, but it worth taking a look.

You definitely do not have to replace the other sensor if only one is bad. It would just suck to have to do the work a second time if the other one goes bad soon after finishing the job. I still would not do both unless I found a cheap price on a second sensor. My main concern would be more on the wire harness because some times the sensor is not bad at all even though the code reader says it is. When the wire harness is bad, it can cause your engine light to come on and falsely accuse the sensor of being bad. There are other videos on youtube that show you how to test a knock sensor with a multimeter and if you are lucky, you may find out that your knock sensor is good and does not even need replacing and the harness is actually the culprit. No matter what, I would change the harness because it is not that expensive.

+Chris S (CRUCIAL414) You're right again..., i see/hear a lot that main culprit is indeed the wire harness. But yet to find a reliable way to test the sensor, beside continuity test which isn't 100%.But it'd be safe, at 15oKmls. to replace sensors as well. "fuel/air mixture sensor(?),is said to be replaced too.

Great video but may I add on? I have an 04 Solara 3.3 and the knock sensor locations are the same as 03 and prior, but the sensors are made entirely different. The 03 and before Solara models have the same sensors as shown in the video, but 04-08 V6 Solaras use the ring type sensors that are mounted with bolts. I had to look it up by the year on RockAuto before making an order and surely enough, 03 and 04 have different sensors lol.

I have a 2002 camry v6. Replaced both knock sensors and harness. Was getting sensor #2 code then after the replacement of both I got a code on #1 knock sensor...? I went back in to check out connections and found that the harness wasnt clicked all the way and corrected it. I took it out and it shifted into overdrive for a couple test runs then I coded out again for sensor #1. Again not shifting into overdrive... any thoughts?

+MrJimmy3459 You don't have to, but you should have something underneath the car to catch the small amount that leaks out while doing the job. Then, make sure to fill it back up to the proper level after.

The hardest part - the back three nuts hodling the bracket - you did not show.. 1 14mm and 2 12 mm nuts. what the flex wrench you used and how you do it

This must be a Lexus. My 2002 Camry has different size nuts and different styles than described here.
