In this video we go through the process of upgrading 9 standard bulbs with new LEDs on a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo instrument cluster. (Or replacing burned out bulbs).
Visit the link below to find out more on the process.

I see this video is about 4 years old now. I just remember that the Neg. Pole for the lights is always UP or toward the top of those boards. ;) Also an additional word of advice. If you're going to change the lights to LED's and you see the Stepper Motors still say X15 on them(and since you're in there anyway), change them out for the newer X27-168's. The X15-168's were known to fail prematurely. If one fails the rest will quickly fail soon after then none of your gauges will work. It's a flaw in the circuit design. There's no fail-safe to stop over-current to the rest of the steppers when one stops working. The X27 is more robust and resistive to one of others failing. Changing the stepper motors is a bit more involved but it's worth the time looking up video's on how to change them however. Even if it's a video covering how to change those Stepper motors in a GMC truck cluster. They're all the same.

@SternLX thanks. But The original poster and person who made this write up over 10 years said to use resistors. While these people are using the same write up to make the video say not to. So i decided not to do it because im not sure whats correct and dont want to risk burning something up.

Is this the only way to perform LED gauge cluster in Monte Carlo?

Why was a resistors not used in this instance and When should resistors be used ?

I see no one answered your question here. 2 years later... Not needed because Gauge lighting is already on a variable resistive circuit controlled by the Gauge Dimmer/Brightness control on your dash. AKA a user controlled potentiometer. The pot don't care what the down stream resistance is. As to your 2nd question: A load resistor only needs to be used if the Incandescent lights being replaced with LED's are exterior turn signal lights. The relays that control those lights are rated for a specific resistance range. When you switch to LED's there's less resistance and extra Amperage in that circuit now(as Resistance lowers, Amperage rises if Voltage remains constant) that has to go somewhere. It's going strait into the Relay(s) and shortening their life by making the run hotter(I've melted a few Relay's in my day).

Is the 6th digit apart of the miles?

Uhhh what? Part of the miles? You mean like super saver miles? Or frequent flyer miles? I really don't understand.

Will this process work with a 2004 impala SS?
@SternLX
@SternLX 3 месяца назад
Yes, it's practically the same board. I believe the only difference was the SS has a Boost Gauge where the Voltmeter is on the LS's. There are also better LED's now than those old 5mm 12v button style LED's. Newer Cube LED's have better diffusion and spread the light more evenly vs how the Button style can "Spot light" the gauge face.

I see where you mentioned to someone here what size. 5mm but what voltage did you use?
@FixItPlanet1
@FixItPlanet1 3 года назад
What??? These are surface mount, or SMD type LED's. I don't understand the question. The voltage is relevant to the type of LED used.

Is the 5mm a standard voltage

I don't understand the question. It seems you are over thinking the question. Please look here for more information. www.bbengineer.com/cars/impala/clusterlight.htm

I wonder what idiotic engineer at GM decided to stop using 194 bulbs that anybody can change and switched to soldered in bulbs. Stupid.
