Mark Martin said his steering just locked up, but the steering was later checked and nothing could be found wrong with it that would have caused it to lock up. Many blame this on the Talladega curse.
Was thinking the same thing. With the new stage race format, it's pretty much eliminated any chances of it ever happening again(no matter how slim they may have been).
Yup! I was at Michigan '99 for a caution free event in which Dale Jarrett won. It was actually very very boring tho. The field was so strung out the whole race, it was hard to even keep track of who was leading as u cldnt hear announcer & this was b4 cellphones & huge TV screens at track. Just a tiny number pylon which I cldnt even see. I Do Not like current format but that race was terrible!
Las Vegas today is the first race since this talladega race to go without an on track incident. Not counting stages there was not a caution for a car in trouble today.
Man these commercials bring back soooo many memories! I remember watching many of the 2002 races at the campground my grandmother camped at for the summer. I was 12 at the time. Good time to be alive for sure.

ahhhh yes, the old asphalt :) the old cars :) the old exhaust sound :) the old broadcast team :) and the good ol' classic restrictor plate racing :) Were lucky if we can finish a race under green nowadays, even with the help of three GWC's, these guys did a 188 lap run to the finish without a hitch. It's amazing how things have changed in the last ten years.
Dammit, I have invested like two hours of my life already watching this race and Jeff goes behind the wall. Just a reminder of the things that never change.
This was NOT the one race that did JG in, but it did SEVERELY affect his chances. He had the best car in this race, along with Michael Waltrip. Had the engine not failed, he probably would have won the race or at least gotten a top 5. Jeff truly lost the title at Bristol in the spring, Sonoma, Richmond in the fall and Martinsville in the fall. It's a shame, because he ran well enough all year to repeat as champ.
Definetly for the better. 4 wide racing. 4 wide finishes. bigger crashes and the racers aren't getting hurt because of the safety is so good. I think the racing is much better now.
I remember the days when they went from spread out single file draft packs to 3 and 4 wide 2 second packs, and then NASCAR tried to spread them back out by using the 2 inch roof bar, which stacked them up even more and slowed them down, and then in this race they restricted the gas tank to spread them out, and it didn't help, the only reason NASCAR isn't as good today is because of the COT, I absolutely love the attempts at a green finish and the "boys have at it", which we didn't have then.
Even if manufacturer representation returns next year, it will never be te same. That's progress, but progress sometimes dictates things that we don't like.
I don't know about that, this year has set a new record for the fewest cautions all year, the California race was caution free (with the exception of rain), Cocacola 600 was caution free, Talladega would have went 146 laps caution free if Reagan Smith had not have blown his engine, which after Bristol heated things up we might see a lot more wrecks at the years end.
So unusual that there was not one caution at the track where everyone expects the big one to happen. The pace car drivers just sat there doing nothing.
If it hadn't rained at Auto Club in 2012 that could've possibly turned out to be a caution-free race. (The only caution in the race was called for rain and the race ended up being rained out.)
Even Brian France wanted to bring in new markets and do things his way, even if it meant taking away races from Darlington and Rockingham. Even I wish they could bring back Rockingham.
The worst race in Hendrick Motorsports history. It’s amazing how they could have no cautions but still put on a good show. Entertaining racing the whole time. Nowadays about 10 cars are running at the end.
I remember being at this race. I was so pumped to see my driver #6. Then J.J. ran into him and Mark didn't have a chance. Still a fun (but hot) race to go to. I was in 9th grade. I'm getting old.
I fucking LOVE that Mark Martin took Jimmie Johnson out of the race before the green even dropped, and NASCAR didn't kiss Jimmie's ass and hold off the start so he could fix his car. He could've pitted, and then Chad Knaus fucking whines, and lies like the bitch he is, when the rule is you can pit before the green, as long as you don't fuel the car, without being penalized. Of course, they'd kiss his ass today, and cater to his every demand seeing as he's cheated about 30 times, and they celebrate him like he's the greatest ever. NASCAR has become a joke! And I fucking HATE that #48

+viacomsux45 That was when Earnhardt Sr. was alive. Fans like me are well aware of what NASCAR was like when Earnhardt Sr. was alive & he was getting everything his way. 1990 is the signature example of that era. NASCAR won't give a dang about RCR now-a-days.
+Ultimate23Dragon And any give-a-shit that they do have for the RCR guys is all about the #3 car. That's how it was back in the 1990s, too. I don't remember Mike Skinner getting anywhere near the lucky breaks that Dale Sr. got.
What rotten luck for Jimmie. He starts on the pole, before the race starts, he gets hit by Mark Martin, ends up going a lap down and never gets his lap back due to not one caution coming out and then his engine goes out.
lol looks like we have 2 conversations going, but the problem with that race '09 fall dega was the stupid rules package. I wouldnt believe myself saying a race with 2 cars fliping was boring, but that wasnt a good race.
I think this was the last time there was acaution free race. Its a shame this will never happen again , Brian France and NASCAR will never allow it again
