The two young violinists at 1.05.40 playing the solo for Hector the Hero are superb. Tracey Simmons, Scots Guards and Eva Rose, Royal Marines are a credit to their units…
Im sure we all miss Tom Fleming!!! What this man didn't know wasn't worth knowing , he certainly researched his stuff and was popular at many state occasions ranging, from The Queen Mothers funeral,Princess Dianas funeral. to the Cenotaph in whitehall
For a wee while i was the next door neighbour to Brians Grandad. We got on great together. My partner commented "you two are like termites from a previous life", due to our mutual wood addiction 😂.On his desk was a picture of him as a young man. Facially he and Brian both looked identical. I had the pleasure of meeting Brian at his granddads memorial service. I was so impressed on how fit Brian was and could visualise how others follow him. Such an ambassador for Scotland and the Black Watch.
I searched this year in particular cuz I was studying abroad (Baylor in Great Britain 2002) and It was my first time in Europe however this event occurred near the end of my time. I distinctly remember how wet, cold, and misty/rainy it was that weekend although this took place in early August. Being from a much warmer climate, Houston, TX, and never really traveling north..I was more of a 'beach ppl' than 'ski ppl' ... I had to run into a jacket shop earlier in the day to buy something to keep warm. The queen arrival was such a treat and my overall experience was like a 'walk through history'. I've been privileged to return to europe many times since then, in all seasons with my wife and family but that first one takes the cake, as if it happened yesterday and I can detail it out day by day. Perhaps it's b/c that program, Baylor in Great Britain, was one of the more popular study abroad programs at Baylor however, after the events of 9/11/2001, the usually group of 200+ students of years prior (I had friends who went and recommended the program) was just 75 in the summer of 2002. Aprox 55 girls to 20 guys...I was one of the guys ;-)...and met my future wife on that trip....at least that's what she says ;-)!
Just come up on this absolutely first class best tattoo I've seen been of Scottish decent I love everything about Scotland especially the pipe band there's nothing can beat them
Although the quality is not up to modern video standards, I do like the performance better. Modern Edinburgh Tattoos seem to feature more pop music and less martial pomp and ceremony. This seems to be increasing as the years go by...
Richard Crowe I agree, 1998 to 2007 was there prime but now hopefully with a new director of music it should be better and the 2017 tattoo was pretty good.
Agree - I think it is important to keep Edinburgh tattoo a ceremony for Scottish martial pomp and ceremony. That's what everyone comes to see and impresses the tourists. Maybe they worry about not being accused of not being inclusive enough to the LGBT and ethnicities? People can see the pop stuff in any city so we should stick to what we do best.
This seems to be a pretty good Tattoo. In recent years it seems to have become a BBC inspired multi-culture kitsch fest at the expense of why people watch the Tattoo (for awesome drill and great military music)
How much the dignity and gravitas of these original Edinburgh Tattoo days are missed by the standard of today. (Don’t even know if the military are involved in the programming any more.)
Thank you for sharing this special night. My late partner and I were there to witness the surprise arrival of HM The Qeens. It brought back such happy memories 1:24:19
Absolutely Amazing Tattoo. This one is one of my favorites so far that I've watched on RU-vid. thank you for posting. Can anyone tell me the slow air that is played at 7:50 min mark please? thank you in advance.
I was thoroughly enjoying this until I head "Auld Lang Syne" - It's a great pity that they didn't stick to the original poem as written by the Bard, Rabbie Burns. It's quite loathsome to hear "for the sake of Auld Lang Syne". Put into English, that means "For the sake of for the sake of old times". Sad. 😞
