It is amazing how much faster the atvs have gotten. The reason they needed a separate track from the bike guys is because all but the 450R did not have the weight, power, and suspension to handle the track. So glad the sport has advanced enough that ATV and bike can share the same track and put down fairly close lap times. I could only imagine how deadly the best banshee or raptor would be on a supercross track after seeing how many of them were coming up short on their jumps. Crazy.
This video proves why Banshees belong in the Dunes and why Raptors belong on the trails. Leave the MX racing to the 250Rs and R450s. The TRX250R wasn't voted "quad of the century" without good reason.
Its amazing to see the progress quads (or suspension) have made in less than 10 years...and i have to say that it is usually the rider that determines the outcome of a race, not the quad.
why cant some organization bring back atv racing like this for supercross...i remember back in the day when ama race weekends were dirt bikes and atvs now as far as supercross stadium racing goes dirtbikes are the only ones getting any love or tv time..but they was still racing quads like this in canada like 3-4 years ago and i think this race was canada also
That was just for the 2stroke/4stroke debates. i do agree w/ jmfdizog though that the 250rs and the newer 450s are much better suited for mx racing than banshees or rapters.
if only it were still like that.. The smell in the air the slight smokey mist and the sound of 2 strokes running as fast as they can. Now we have lazy riders who want "bottem end and tourqe and predictable power" WTF! That banshee out fronts kick ass. I love banshees real men race them because they are infact harder to ride long travel banshees especially ones in a diff frame make me smile
Tbh I don't know what the rule set was back then, then it today maybe they did maybe they didn't but I can still tell you one thing I would kill to have to a 86 250r race built and see if it can slay the new model 450s.

He has a youtube channel and raced hare scrambles w a r, it was like a 340 or 360 something but he has alot of vids of his starts and he would get badass holeshots almost like he was playing w them. I'm sure a built 250 is right there w a 450, you can make them alot faster but not sure if it takes boring or not. Those things are so rare around home idk exactly how fast one is now I haven't seen one in so long. I used to race bikes and I had a 96 cr 125 that had all kinda shit done to it. Crank rod work, little bit of cylinder work.caarbon fiber reeds pipe, all kinda shit, was done by dude I bought it from and when the 426 Yamahas first come out they just were faster than me on straitaways up until about 5th then they pulled away a little so a power valve 250 cc should be close.
There was at least one LT250R in this race, but I doubt any sane person would try to race a Zilla in a small SX course like this as it would be a bull in a China shop. Very surprised they even allowed Banshees to compete as they were way too big to do anything but get the hole shot and then DNF. I did see a yellow 400EX, but this race was dominated by the 250R's.
@@steve069 I had a 400ex that was a ⁴¹⁶ w hi comp piston, head work, race cam, jet kit , pipe and it would hang right beside my buddies yfz ⁴5⁰ thru third then he would ease on ahead of me but that air cooled motor went thru more heat and wear and tear w that engine work. It was really turned that quad into hi maintenance and on a tight track it still wasn't anything for a ²⁵⁰ r. I wonder if ama would still have the cc rules printed for the races back then somewhere.
Plenty of people raced Banshees back in the day, since it was easier to buy one new up to 2002 than tracking down a beat up 250R that was out of production and beat up. You could also get a Laeger Protrax chassis that mounted the banshee motor, radiator, and plastics, but had the same suspension as the Protrax for the 250R.
@HappyFilmer i have an 88 trx250r with a stitty fmf pipe i can can mow in my buddys 660 raptor , 4 stroke will NEVER make more power than a 2 stroke thats a proven fact!
