A few things, most important to leas important: MAKE SURE YOUR TRUST YOUR TORQUE WRENCH! 8.7 ft lb is not much! I stripped the threading in the engine block corresponding middle back nut. It felt like a lot of torque much but I kept going because it didn't click. It's not the end of the world but a huge hassle. 5 nuts correctly torqued (with a friends torque wrench) along with the hondabond liquid gasket have been holding the top and it's not leaking. To get in I will need to cut the nut off and rethread using a helicoil kit. This is very common, but please read this and be carful!!! If you don't have a 29mm socket to push the spark plug rings in, just use the old spark rings! They have a nice stiff metal core surrounded with rubber to prevent scratching the soft aluminium and they are the perfect size. I didn't have a mallet so I used a hammer to hit a short piece of 2x4 to hit the old ring into the new ring. Worked like a charm. The rings I got were a pretty tight fit unlike what was shown in the video. When you get the cover back on, the spark plug rings wont be seated on the tubes. Just poke them a bit with a screwdriver and make sure they have a good seal. Be carful not to tear them. The factory service manual says to make sure the gasket is clean and dry so I didn't put oil on it like Scotty says to. Not leaking so I think that's the right choice. Also make sure to clean the old hondabond off and use a plastic scraper so you don't scratch the mating surface. Are you around Sacramento CA? Shoot me an email and use my hondabond! 1 tube is enough to do this job about 600 times lol Good luck and be carful with the torque!! Joseph

My 2006 Honda is having issues getting the cover tubes off! They’re breaking into small pieces and falling everywhere… having to chisel it off, it’s so stuck that we’ve torched it to melt the plastic and no luck
@PickyOne

When you remove the old tube seal put a new one right away. If you remove them all in one shot you'll forget to which side they sit and you may fit them up-side-down.

Friendly Suggestions: 1) remove power steering hose & put glove with zip tie to hold the liquid, put aside. 2) using flat screw driver twist open gently on both corners of the valve cover. 3) lift upwards gently. 4) Clean off old RTV gasket before putting new & use a small dot & the rest of the rail. 5) Use torque wrench & follow torque sequence according to repair manual. Most importantly: Use OEM gasket seals even if using aftermarket valve cover.

If the inside of the valve cover has a lot of dirty, thick, caked on oil in it should you wipe it off to get rid of some of the dirty oil or simply leave it alone and reinstall it as is? Also AFTER replacing the gasket and reassembling everything is it a good idea to do an oil change? Thanks

Late response but the ez solution is to hit the grime with brake clean. Oil change is not necessary for this.

The removal method shown in the video for the spark plug tube seals is TERRIBLE. Using a pry bar will gouge the soft aluminum. DO NOT DO WHAT HE DOES! Instead, get a 6" length of 1/2" diameter PVC pipe. Insert the pipe at an angle in the spark plug tube hole from the TOP side. Now, set the outer edge of the PVC pipe on the edge of the seal, and tap on the PVC pipe with a hammer to knock out the seal. Tap one side of the seal, then the other. You can hammer away as firmly as you like, because the PVC pipe will not damage the aluminum of the valve cover. This works great!
@mogtrader8
@mogtrader8 5 лет назад
You are saying to use a 1/2" PVC pipe to hammer from top side of the valve cover? do you know which side up are the grommets for the seals? Thanks.

Excellent video thanks for this! Just changed the gaskets on my 04 accord. However a problem came up. One of the valve cover nuts won’t torque down all the way. It won’t increase in resistance the more I tighten. I’m scared that it’s stripped. Right now it’s too tight for me to loosen or tighten without tools, but obviously I’m not happy about that. @jgizzy
@jgizzy 6 лет назад
At the dealership, our master techs really don't wait for the RTV/Hondabond to 'cure' or 'dry' before starting and driving the vehicle. If you read the Honda shop manual they will say to wait a period of time before adding oil and another longer period of time before driving car -- but like I said all of our Honda master technicians just install and send the car back to customer and never had a problem with a returning customer complaining of any oil leaks from the RTV/Hondabond.

@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts Год назад
You just have to push it down so that other wires and other parts doesn’t get in the way of the valve cover. You’ll still have to screw the bolt down so it’ll tighten the valve cover and the gasket.
@AgelessNomad
@AgelessNomad Год назад
Yes you have to press HARD as well as watch out for the wires. The seals have to go around those metal tubes. The cover with the new seals will sit on top of the metal tubes causing the case cover to "rock" as you put it. Lube the tube seals and the metal tubes they sit on with oil or dielectric grease before pressing the cover over them. If not they WILL be damaged or overstretch and not seat around them. Manually torquing the case on is not advised. use an automatic driver like the one shown in the video. Although do not over torque the nuts. IF you use the correct liquid gasket: P/N 08717-0004, 8718-0001, 8718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009 do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket. (For P/N 08718-0002 no more than 4 minutes, for all others no more than 5 minutes) If so you have to remove the liquid gasket and start over. YUP this sucks that bad but doable, you need to be quick on the reinstall using Hondabond. 19:15

@@Akryus his changing a head valve, I think head gasket is complicated than you think. I know that you need to time the chain right and stuff and I don't know how to do that

John Krag THANK YOU!! I've seen like 6 videos about this similar engine and how to replace the spark plugs and the cylinder head gasket and none seem to know, or care to mention, that there are 2 seals related to each spark plug and coil; the inner seal and the one that goes on the top part of the head cover.

So there are 2 seals one for inside the valve cover gasket and one on top of it?
@tg900
@tg900 6 лет назад
One is shown installed in the video. The other one goes on the coil pack. Look at the underside of your cool packs. It seals out dust and water from getting into the spark plug tubes.

One of the spark plugs is leaking oil from it. So it's those O rings is bad right?
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 4 года назад
If there’s oil on the spark plug by the tip, then it’s the tube seal.
@josephlevine2836

If you changed them but still leaking make sure the seals are seated. I had to poke at them a bit to get them to seat.

sorry i meant serpintine belt which didnt need to be changed and i changed it anyway. They said there was a bad oil leak and i didnt see anything. we cleaned the engine off and now we are going to wait two weeks and see if theres anymore oil spilling. they wanted to charge about 750 for replaing the valve cover seals and the serpentine belt. The belt had no cracks or any bad signs of wear. money hungry fellers at honda
@NutzAboutBolts
@NutzAboutBolts 8 лет назад
Pixelated Thomas was the serpentine belt making any noise for them to suspect the belt was bad? why did they automatically think the belt was bad? also I would like to see where this leak is coming from...
@jet613
@jet613 8 лет назад
the belt never squeaked i suspect its just the dealership just trying to get money. they just looked at it and i guess wanted to replace it for 150 + ish or so. The belt was fine when we took it off no cracks or anything. i didn't really see a leak anywhere. but i don't have anything to put the car up on. and there's no oil spot where we park it either. so we'll see here soon if there's anything going on.
