I removed and reinstalled the serpentine belt on my Rav4 three times in the past six months. A string of issues. Today's problem was replacement of the tensioner. Up until today I struggled to get the belt off and on. Same issue today, UNTIL! I always put the belt on the alternator pully last since it's on top in the front and smallest. Rather than struggling with getting the belt back on the alternator pully today I slowly pulled the tensioner as far forward as I could and with the belt off the idler I put it around the alternator and still keeping the tensioner compressed with my right hand I slipped my left hand down to the idler and easily pushed the belt on the idler with my fingers. Then I eased off the tensioner and POOF! All done.

This helped but missed some details. This is how I did it. 1. Took the new belt and used heat gun to even out the folds. Also hung it up with a heavy steel block to weight it down. That way you are working with a belt ready to go on. 2. I jacked up the engine with a small hydraulic jack with block on wood on top. Pulled the passenger tire and access panel. Removed the front motor mount. Not difficult except there is a hidden nut on the bottomside of the mount that mounts on the engine. 3. Routed the belt so that the slack was on the tensioner pulley. 4. I was able to move the tensioner with a short 19mm socket with a long handle 3/8 drive ratchet and jambed the handle against the cylinder head so it stayed without anyone holding it. 5. Laying on the ground I used a 14mm socket on the crankshaft to move the engine. I watched the direct of movement of the belt. Using that movement I pushed on the belt in such a way that the movement of the pulley helped to bring the belt onto the pulley. Not easy, what was Toyota thinking!!!!

Im trying to change the alternator on my 2007 rav4 I4 2.4, but I cant compress the tensioner at all even with all my mighty strength, any thoughts?

If you go to 3:35 your gonna see the tensioner shock on the left side next to the crankshaft pully.if you take out the nuts for the little shock the belt will come out and you may have to replace it as well.i hope this works for you man!

@@brosolution So I tried what you told me, I applied the pressure slowly on the belt but it doesn't want to compress any more than a few millimeters even after a 30 seconds with the help from the 19mm hex bolt from above like the one in 1:28

Try to remove the bolt and nut from little shock and just remove it I would replace it because is not comprising the way it should
@rmtheg234
@rmtheg234 3 года назад
@@brosolution So just remove the shock not the whole tensioner?
