2003 Honda Accord V6 Manual - Episode 1: Not Your Vanilla Accord

What is going on here? Why is there a Honda Accord in the Auto Obsessive Garage? A channel known for more obscure automobiles is doing a basic plain old Honda Accord project?
Nope.
What you see here is the legitimate first enthusiast spec'd Accord from Honda (at least here in the states). This Accord Coupe is powered by a 3.0 liter VTEC V6 and is manual transmission equipped! The first time you could get that option in a V6 accord!

I have a red 2003 Accord V6 6-spd coupe. I told you we like the same cars. Lol Just an FYI, the brakes on the 6-spd are not the same as the automatic V6. The 6-spd's are larger. Another cool thing about these cars is the Odyssey 3.5L from the 2005-2006 (non-VCM) engines swap right into this car! Great way to get at least a 15 HP bump as well as around 40 tq.! I specifically bought one that needed a lot of work, but primarily needed a timing belt and clutch. That made doing the Odyssey engine swap a no-brainer. Most people think this car is boring. Far from it! Honda made it pretty special. Unfortunately, the masses didn't appreciate it as much. Such a shame. Another FYI is the Acura TL 2004-2006 3.2L drops right in. The manual transmission from the TL drops right in, too. The benefit is the TL came from the factory with an LSD Trans. The Accord's is open diff. Be aware that the 2007-2008 base TL and Type S engines and transmissions have a different bellhousing bolt pattern. You can swap the 3.5L TL Type S engine into this car, but you will need the transmission as well. Honda swapped between two different bellhousing bolt patterns in the 2000's between all J-Series equipped cars and SUVs. Why, I have no idea. Can't wait to see updates!

@@autoobsessivegarage lol I love learning the differences between certain models. I'm actually going to be making videos in the near future where I explain the differences between specific models. A few more things to point out, the wheels on the 6-spd are specific to only the 2003-2005 coupe. The 2006-2007 coupe and 2006-2007 sedan 6-spd had the same wheels, which were also the same as the 2nd Gen TL (2001-2003) Type S wheels. So you can tell if it's a 6-spd by the red V6 badge and the style of wheels. The faux carbon fiber cubby cover near the shifter is specific to the 6-spd.

the reason was a slight redesign in the engine blocks later j series motors are smaller dimension wise but have the same displacement as older ones this happend right around the time where precats were added instead of the 3 to 1 design earlier j's had

Nice! I own a 2007 Sedan V6 6MT. Love the car, owned it for 8 years now. The sedans are much more rare than the coupes.

if you pull the intake drill out the EGR passages, plus it makes doing the back valve cover way easier. the intake comes off in 20 minutes and you don't have to take off the throttle body. don't waste your money on wheel sensors, spend the money and get a launch scanner that does live data ABS for $250 it will save you thousands in the long run. I have my small 250 dollar launch and it does 99% of what my 11k snap on does. the launch also has add on packs via software to allow tpms relearn and oil reset for euro cars.

Cool trick on making rear valve cover removal simpler. I’ve totally gotta upgrade my scan tool. Replacing all the speed sensors was more of a preventative maintenance measure. It also cleared the TCS/ABS issues and will keep the car like that for years to come.

Oh, some more information about this car I thought of. Any 7th Gen Accords with the red V6 badge means it's a 6-spd. Sedans had the 6-spd option later in the run. 2006-2007. The sedans are even more rare. Only EX-L models could be had with the 6-spd. Only major option was the NAV. This engine gets great gas mileage. The engine is very moddable. You can make these faster than the 2003-2006 350Zs pretty easily. The flywheel is dual mass but you can also choose the 2003 Acura CL 6-spd tradition flywheel. It's cheaper, too. The 3.7L MDX and TL AWD-SH crank swaps right into all J Series engines. However, one thing to note. A 3.7L crank swapped into the 3.0L strokes it only to 3.3Ls. Swapping the crank into the 3.2L and 3.5L blocks nets you 3.6L. No, that's not a typo. 3.6L. These J Series are amazing engines. They are cheap and plentiful, too.

the j series is good but walking a VQ with equal mods I don't see it happening.

@@andydhillon1977 I've had both engines including a VQ 37vhr and currently have a VR 30ddtt in a Q60 Nissan and Honda always had a performance rivalry Honda had the B series and Nissan had the SR had the SR20VET made it to the states no one would have cared about the type r integra. I like both brands but Nissan is my favorite. I'm putting together a 4g63 right now but sadly Mitsubishi went off track 20 years ago.

@@nickkennerley4812 You sound similar to me. I own all kinds of cars, including a Redtop SR20DET 240SX. Honda is my favorite out of all of them though. I like Nissans prior to around 2002-2003-ish. The quality went way down after that. VQ engines put out good power, but greatly lacked in reliability. A Z32 TT 300ZX will likely be in my stable in the future. Possibly a Z33, but with a fully rebuilt engine to make it reliable. I would love an Evo IX and a 92-93 Galant VR4, too.
