R.I.P. Gil De Ferran, the winner of this race, 2 time CART Champion, and the current all time closed course speed record holder (officially, unofficially it is Mauricio Gugelmin).
"Everyone always asks Why Always Say 'Until We Meet Again' instead of Goodbye. To me, Goodbye Is always so final" Marty Reid Goodbye Gil de Ferran. Thank you for Everything
2:53:01 Respect to the safety crew for how they gently got Dan's car back upright, using that detached tire as a cushion. Very smart. Crowd seemed to appreciate it too.
So Sorry 😢 to hear of the passing of Gil de Ferran 2003 Indianapolis 500 Champion. I always will remember his emotions and roar of joy when he finally won. Truly An Amazing moment for a true champion may he Rest In Peace 🕊️
Life is random and sometimes more mysterious than death itself. I do not understand how Gil could be gone all of a sudden, but I like to think that, as the song goes, only the good die young. So long, Gil. Thank you for this awesome memory. I was in my last year of High School about to graduate when you won this race. You were and always will be one of my favorite drivers. RIP ❤
I remember watching this at 7 years old alone in my parents room, twenty years ago. This is crazy. Was more of a Nascar fan at the time but I was impressed with the speed Edit: 51:15 I wasnt even looking and completely forgot about but this was the coolest thing I ever saw at the time when I rewatched. I rewinded that tape again and again to watch this.
As a huge CART fan, I feel like this is the race that really turned my attention towards the IRL. I think any CART race after 2002 was just a shitfest honestly. So IRL races from 2002 to 2007 are worth watching more than CCWS tbh
My first 500 and in the paddock. Didn't know how the seating was prior to it. Couldn't see much because of the fence. It was surreal being at something I watched when I was a kid. As the cars flashed by I felt a disconnect to the reality of the race. The cars were cars with no one driving. Lap 200 approached and there was no emotion from the cars they just raced.
Oh, gee. The race in which The Captain decided to go way off script and enforce team orders just so Gil de Ferran could win the 500 in his final year of racing, and deny Castroneves his 3rd straight Indy 500. Shame, shame. #TheCurseContinues 😞😞😞😞
