I miss these games. A cold November day, a great rivalry and Keith Jackson making those calls as only he could. Whoa Nellie, the big uglies upfront just opened up a hole a whole heard of mules could run through. I'll never have his ability to turn a phrase and I'm fine with that. Thank you Mr. Jackson for all the great memories and I hope the big uglies are watching over you!
Solich got screwed by an AD who had no clue what he was doing and Callahan destroyed the tradition, spirit and energy of the entire program. Callahan has spent his career bouncing from one program to another and having no real success where ever he when. He loved to flash his Superbowl ring but the team that got him there, as an interitem head coach, was built by his predecessor. I danced the day Tom Osborne fired him!
Not sure if Solich should have been fired or not, but I will say this: the team , particularly the offense, improved almost week to week throughout the year. The loss to KState was bad but considering how well KState was playing (remember the Big 12 title game?) I actually didn't think Nebraska played that poorly. In fact, I attended this game and the KState game and Nebraska played about the same each game.
@@BigDawg31675 Yeah, pretty sure a Big XII title team was better by about 40 points than this CU team. Nebraska could play the same and get whipped by KSU and beat CU
Following a legend like coach Osborne is not an easy thing . So much consistency in a program for so many years. You got to stick with what got you there . I sensed panic in the administration .
Delicious punishment delivered by Fabian Washington at 54:05 And, at 2:31:00, besides the fumbles versus Texas Tech and Missouri (1978) is their a worse interception return in DONU history?
bo deserved the firing as he did no better then 10-4 and 9-4 with blowout record breaking losses. Frank did not, he was 2 years out of the national title. He had gone 7-7 in a rebuilding year and had gotten rid of the old staff and brought in his new one. The D was one of the best in the country in 2003 and the offense was starting to improve by seasons end and they did not even get there full recruiting season so we don't know if recruiting would have gotten better either. the biggest question mark in college football. Frank deserved at least 3 more seasons with this staff to see how things went, if he kept losing big and never getting back to championship format then sure move on. But steve peterson was a dumb ass and destroyed nebraska football with such an impatient stupid choice. No one was going to take the job if it was going to National title in 2001, 2002 7-7 and 2003 9-3. SE on the other hand was not dumb for firing bo, he was dumb for hiring mike riley. He legit hired him 4-5 days after firing bo . Mike who never won anything sure he did good things at O state but no championships or bcs bowls. Thats a last second choice not a first choice(SE hired him knowing he could push him around which is what happened). There was plenty i think who would have come to nebraska after bo. Pretty much don't get blown out 2-4 times a season and recruit better.
Yeah, 17 years later, I can definitely say (with hindsight - and all the stuff the Nebraska fb program has been thru) that Frank got a raw deal. Who knows what he might have been able to accomplish. Oh well, he found a pretty solid gig in the MAC, at Ohio (where there's far less pressure...and ridiculously high expectations).
@cornfednebraskaneer the beginning of the decline of Nebraska football. Pederson felt bringing in a Super Bowl coach would be brilliant. Callahan changed the culture by installing the west coast offense literally overhauling the roster for the next five years . If Osborne was the AD Pelini would have been his choice. The turning point in Cornhusker Football .
SP claimed that we were not going to drop to mediocracy, unfortunately for him he was way wrong. Callahan did have a couple winning seasons, but we were also getting our tails kicked worse than what we were used to losing by back in the 80s and 90s.
What an awful game. Judd davies...trash.. ricketts...trash.. i backs... not good.. harian the only threat.. 2004 would have been brutal offensively. Worse than this year. Maybe Solich shouldn't have been fired but this ship was sinking fast
Not as fast during 07 season with Callahan. With the new staff in place they had that season had Solich stayed, they keep bowl streak going, keep building off that. Pederson had no clue what he was doing, thought anyone would take the job. Got turned down by Mike Sherman, Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer and Houston Nutt. Big reason why stuck with fired Billy Callahan
@sorney98 you speak facts. Petersen bungled this as bad as anyone. But I lay some blame at Osborne too. Granted it's revisionist, but a young stoops would have been great as it was rumored... in 04, Urban was an unknown as was a few others who thr job would have appealed to more. I agree with your points tho
@benlauden445 I'm gonna lay it on you, the reason why Osborne named Solich head coach. When Osborne told Frank in 1991 about what he was gonna do, the only other person that knew about it was Bob Devaney who was AD at the time. Course Devaney retired, Bill Byrne brought in from Oregon. If look at Byrne's history his firing and hiring is not great. I would say in his 3 stops of Oregon, Nebraska and Texas A&M he hired 2 good coaches but for baseball. I remember they fired Danny Nee, the basketball program really feel off for years. So I honestly don't think Stoops would of came here, plus another reason when Spurrier left Florida in 01, they went after Stoops but he said no. That tells me he wanted his own team plus Solich did beat Stoops. I think Solich waited too long to replace the older guys on the staff. He knew he had to but waited a year too long. I really do believe with that staff in 03 that things would of improved. Dailey was not a west coast offense QB but he could male throws. I think had Cotton stayed he would of flourish. The problem I have is as much they needed Osborne for money, Harvey Pearlman and Steve Pederson along with Shawn Eichorst wanted to get a coach not picked by Osborne. Will say when John Cook decides to retire the school allows him to pick his successor
I agree I loved Jamal Lord tough gritty QB to bad he couldn’t pass a lick. That interception in the end zone against Texas to end the game was brutal .
From 06-10, things looked pretty good. The B1G move in my mind cannot be overstated as Nebraska never ever recognized the drawbacks and only looked at the opportunities
Jammal Lord and Joe Dailey, two N.U. QB's who'll be alternately remembered and forgotten as players in the decline of Nebraska fb in the 2000's...whether they deserve that or not.
