2003 Suburban Quarter Panel Repair - Rust repair panel installation on a Chevy Suburban rear quarter panel. Utilizing panel bond adhesive technology and minimal welding for this install. Just the panel replacement and bodywork... sorry no paint vids on this one. Customer needed vehicle back sooner than anticipated.

Don't forget lighting...hahaha... Often times I get in the zone and forget to pick up the camera to video the progress...or time is of the essence and I need to hustle to meet a timeline..then get grief about it not being a good "how to" video. I often find myself saying "it's not a how-to video but how-I-did-it video" Either way, I enjoy watching your vids...keep on picking up that camera.

great video--I actually have seen very few examples of panel bonding. I am a good welder--but agree that its much easier to blend a 20 guage overlay than to grind everything out and refill..ugh. I have a Suburban 2500 that I would love to do when weather warms up--same rust areas as yours...keep up the great work!

I have watched almost every one of your Videos and I always learn something. I have never used panel bond but I got to tell you I like it, no warping fast good rust prevention I think I will buy a tube of Fuse bond for my toolbox, I assume it lasts as long as it is sealed and you only need to buy new tips where the two compounds mix. Good Video Thanks!
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 лет назад
+Cary Lamari First off... I would like to thank you and all the folks who tune in to my vids! It's the reason I keep making them. As far as any two component panel adhesive, I believe they have a guaranteed shelf life printed on them. I would buy as I need it. I think it has like a 12 to 18 month shelf life. And then again... I think if it's stored properly, it should be fine. Just pick up extra tips like you said. I think they put the date on it to cover their ass when it comes to warrantee . I have watched product vids from 3m and Fusor on these type of products and they test them in crash situations to see if the bonded panels will separate. Amazing how strong the bonded seam is compared to welds. It just does not come apart.

Excellent video. I haven't used the panel bond and was wondering what the filler blend was going to look like with the lapped metal and it turned out very nice. I guess you could also flange the original quarter, but no more of a blend that you had it might not be worth it. Keep the vids rolling.
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 лет назад
+Double R Restorations Thanks buddy. The way you prep the lap joint is the key (I think). You use the angle grinder to put a steep 10 degree bevel (according to directions) on both areas of the lap joint. If you had a flat area you could use a flange but I seem to have a hard time not shrinking and warping the panel with the flanger. It seems to shrink it no matter what I do. I do cab corners this way and the seam is still invisible after 2-3 years so far. I haven't been using the adhesive long enough for a long term test to see if the seam ever shows back thru.

@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 лет назад
+Michael Quigley The instructions do not require a flange or joggle as you say but I see no reason that you couldn't do it that way. Should work out just fine as long as the metal is prepped properly and the adhesive covers the bare steel area.

nothing wrong with this repair. Panel bond is strong! When you use the stuff with glass bead especially, it allows a proper minimum thickness to remain for strength. I went to wyotech for collision repair and some cars are made by manufacturer to pass collision tests with panel bonded parts. They also use so called structural foam in side pillars to reinforce for strength and it sucks to repair. this is a good method, so don't hate. you can't be stupid and put heat on these areas with welding obviously! use your head. these are for low stress areas and with a lap joint like this it has strength. guarantee many body shops use this method regularly. great video, this will help many. Also panel bond isn't cheap either, and is very strong. rock on brother! great for rust repair on personal vehicle when just hate sight of rust and then paint or bedliner over with proper preparation of surface and application of product.

I just did my 02 avalanche quarters and used panel bond ( different brand) but used self tapping screws to hold panel in place. pre-drilled them to make sure panel fit correctly. used fiber filler like you did but didn't know what to do about the screws after panel had cured. thought about grinding off the heads of the screws off and hope to God the rust doesn't start there and cover them with fiber filler or take them out and the Jam filler in the holes and hope for the best. what did you do. didn't show it in the video?????

@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 лет назад
+Jason Curry I will do "light" collision work where there isn't a bunch of frame damage. I just don't have the equipment to do the heavy hits. Crushed rockers and front aprons are not bad but with no frame machine or formal training it will be a while before I start those kind. Maybe a crash and burn for a flipper car or something...... A guy on youtube to check out is Arthur Tussik if you haven't seen his vids before. His vids are subtitled because I believe he is in Russia so no english. But this guy is an absolute expert at pulling frames and straightening the inner structures.

can those panels be entirely glued, instead of welding
@Velvethamma
@Velvethamma 8 лет назад
I suppose you could but it would cause you to have quite a bit more filler work to do. It might also be difficult to overlap the patch on all sides since it is made to butt weld. You could get creative and use the panel bond to "glue" a sheet metal backer strip to join the old to new. My way seems like the easiest approach if you can weld.
