Despite an injury-shortened career I believe Ghostzapper belongs in conversations involving truly great horses. His Vosburgh, Tom Fool, Iselin, Woodward, Breeders Cup Classic and even his last race, the 2005 Met Mile are testaments to his greatness. Absolutely not overrated.
steven cooke, an excellent horse & I had him in a double that year with High Chaparral. If not for the dead heat, I’d have done quite well. Ghostzapper, along with Zafonic (1993) should have a better rating than 130...
I have Ghostzapper as the best since Spectacular Bid and #4 in the last 60 years (Dr Fager, Secretariat, Bid, Ghostzapper). He ran similarly to the Doc, just a notch below. Underrated big time. #5? Ruffian, an emotional pick but the best filly that I ever saw.
@@curragh4635 A hair below Ghost; 2 hairs below the Bid; don’t even mention him with Dr Fager or Secretariat even though Big Red got beat by Onion, Prove Out, Angle Light and Sham. I was really disappointed with the 121 Beyer and he was “ridden out”. Great performance but not legendary. Flightline…Best since Ghostzapper. Tough to judge a horse with only 6 lifetime races too. Money/Greed ruining racing and everything else.
Sat with Andy Stronach during the race. After Ghostzapper won I said “Andy, you just won 2 1/2 million”. He said “closer to 10” And he was right. Tremendous sire too.
This Horse was so Good he spent his short career entering each race off LONG layoffs and STILL was able to Effortlessly Win races...He definitely had All Time Great ability and is an All Time Great Horse and Legend...This Classic Field was STACKED!!
Ghostzapper was A Beast!! Roses in May won Dubai World Cup.. Pleasantly Perfect won Breeders Cup Classic and even Saint Liam Won Classic and with a 1:59 to Boot!! Beholder And Zapper must be Siblingsbsomehow

This Horse Could Handle any Distance against Grade 1 Fields and Bury them and do it is Very Fast time...He also could go to the Lead and Wire a Field or sit right off the Pace or come from Dead last 15 lengths off the pace...He also did this off 1 LONG layoff after the other...Ghostzapper was The real Deal...Elite Top level Horse

I have been a fan for > 50 years and Ghostzapper is in my top 4 with Dr Fager, Secretariat and Spectacular Bid. Who’s best? It depends on the distance. At 1 1/8, Secretariat finishes 3rd or 4th against these. At 1 1/4, Secretariat is the one to beat.
@@richd3044 Good point! His Marlboro performance was spectacular. He failed 2x at 1 1/8 losing to Onion and Angle Light/Sham. My only knock against him is that he lost 3 races to inferior competition. That can't be said about MOW, Doc or the Bid.
@@OHRaceFan Although that is true about his losses, there were circumstances in each one of those. The maiden race was a joke, getting wiped out at the start in a short 5 1/2 furlong race in a large field. He was sick for the Wood although I can understand them running him. The race that he should never have run in was the Whitney. Turcotte begged Laurin not to run him as he knew the horse wasn't nearly fit. Sure enough, he had a viral infection and finished second to Onion who he left up the track in the Marlboro. Angle Light never came close to Secretariat in the other three races they competed in.
@@richd3044 I hear ya. At his best, he was maybe the best ever over a distance of ground. But he was always his best, not to his standard. Three track records in all three classics is the greatest achievement in the sport. I am not knocking him. It’s similar to the Tiger versus Jack discussion. Jack not only won 3 more majors and 14 more seconds, he did it against Palmer, Player, Trevino, Watson…much tougher competition than Tiger ever played against. Damascus and Buckpasser were far better than any of Big Red’s competitors. Not even close. And you have to look at careers, not a handful of races. Just like Arrogate. We somewhat disagree and I respect your opinion. Most fans agree with you. Modern day, I want to see Flightline tangle with LIG. Maybe in the Met Mile or the Whitney. Knicks Go really disappointed last weekend. I enjoyed our exchange.
@@OHRaceFan I tend to agree on the golf argument. Although Tiger faced a deeper pool of talented players, I think it's more difficult to take on and defeat high caliber players who not only had talent but carried a certain aura about them as well. Secretariat faced solid competition. In fact, Steve Haskins wrote an article about it several years ago on Bloodhorse. The 1970 foal crop is arguably top 5 all time. Plus, Secretariat defeated top notch older horses, something that Bid never did. I think something was wrong with Knicks Go last week. The race was just very confusing to me, and then I saw him dropping diarrhea post race.
@@DanielSong39 that superfecta paid $242k! I remember, because it paid more than the pic 6, ( about 240k)how unlikely, that the longest shot in the field would run 2nd, continuing with the horses with least preference..
He had it all his own way. Pleasantly Perfect had to take the overland route and could not be expected to challenge a loose on the lead sprinter. The time was good but on a track that may have been faster than most. Overrated.
