Roughly 5-10 years ago, a man was arrested in Wisconsin. He was going around to dealer lots, taking "test drives" in Dale JR. Monte Carlos. He would bring a key and switch it out on the test drive, and then come back later after the dealer closed to steal the car. When the cops caught up with him, they found his collection of 8-10 Dale JR. Monte Carlos he had been collecting. This is 100% a true story, and the real legacy of this car.

Why would anyone design a car to basically look like a Nascar and then not make it V8 and RWD

I will say, as a tall person these things were actually quite nice. They are to date, the only two door FWD coupe I can fit in the back of and not want to die like 15 minutes into the ride. And they are pretty comfy in their own right to drive.

GM slaughtered this car when they put it on the fwd W platform. I can understand the Impala and 4 door Grand Prix GT being a fwd car since they actually had a usable rear seat that in a crunch could fit 3 across. The Monte Carlo was a large fwd Coupe with mild performance and marginal interior quality. It was a front heavy vehicle that didn’t like to be pushed and the earlier 2000-03 6th gen SS models were dogs without the supercharger. Ride quality was Buick plush, maybe a tiny bit stiffer but it was not sporty at all. A lot of the W bodies felt like badge engendered versions of one another.

There was also a Dale Sr version (in black), a Jeff Gordon version (in blue) and a Tony Stewart version (in orange). They were all the same beyond the colors and driver branding. Love the Terry Hill shout out. That place has been closed for years. Was just outside Kutztown on 222. Couldn’t complete with Dorney Park, which is 10 minutes or so up the road.

As someone who's parents had several early-mid 2000s Monte Carlos, (including two of these), I can remember the smell of there interiors vividly.

Neighbour got his daughter one of these, the black on red intimidator version. I was a kid so i thought it was a v8. Because of course it should be. Unlimited disappointment finding it out

these cars will always have a special place in my heart. i have loved nascar from a very young age, and i remember seeing the dale jr mote carlos on the road as a kid and thinking "its a nascar car!" i bought one about a year ago as my first car, and while its not perfect, i love it.

My wife’s dad bought one brand new, he’s daily driven it every day for years. It’s got over 300k on the clock. He’s redone the suspension a few times, many wheel bearings and a transmission but it’s still alive to this day. These cars really aren’t that bad.

Sad thing is there was a time in the early 70s when a Monte Carlo was a classy luxury muscle car. That was a respectable car. You needed to actually be somewhat successful to own one. GM themselves ruined the name in the late 80s.

My friend had a gen 5 Monte Carlo. It was basically a two door Lumina. And by "basically", I mean that's exactly what it was.

I've always had an irrational affection for that last generation of Monte Carlo, so I'm psyched to hear Mr. Regular ripping into it.

When I look at this generation Monte Carlo and the Impala, reminds me how much better the 1996 Impala SS were. But the owner of this has kept it in wonderful condition and the fact she takes it to tracks makes this Monte Carlo awesome

I had a 2005 SS version of these. I remember spying it on a dealer's lot and immediately falling for it, and with a loan by the first national bank of mom and dad I bought it. I remember reading the owner's manual for it and finding out that it needed premium fuel because of that hot-air blower and was dedicated to premium all the time. I used to destroy ricer hondas back around 2010 with it, and almost got destroyed by a cop when he clocked me at 90 on an on-ramp after getting out from seeing Fury Road. It was the first car a took a wrench to and found out exactly how much a new set of quality shocks can dramatically improve the ride. deleted the resonators on it but left stock mufflers and discovered the secret to a cheap and non-deafening exhaust note improvement. Took it all the way from Chicago to Detroit a few times and once to Baltimore with 4 people and all their convention shit in that massive sizeable trunk. Took it to car meets and caused some other dude in a honda to fall so far behind he overheated trying to catch up. Lunched two transmissions, 4 conventions, 8 years, 200 ricebuckets, 100k miles, and a dudebro in a v6 charger who I remember watching him uncomfortably trying to regain dudebro status with his passenger after being beaten by a kid in a chevy while I laughed maniacally. I named it Charlotte. I miss Charlotte.

My dad had a black 2000 SS. It wasn't supercharged, and it got beat on for 250000 miles over 12 years, but man did we love that car. We thought it was so fast... even though it wasn't. Sometimes I still think about going to get one of these things just to remember the old days.

I always liked the look of the Grand Prix coupe and the Monte Carlo. While I think these should have had a V8, a supercharged V6 is cool too. Good looking cars.

This REALLY makes me miss my 1998 Grand Prix GTP. Sold it with 225,000 miles on it because the rocker panels were starting to rust out, have missed it ever since. Even though it was the best car I've ever driven in the snow, it had the shittiest, most undersized brakes I've ever driven, not just owned.
