Hi chap, I love my 2002 Blackbird, what I can say is that seat is not original, the original follows the lines of the rear fairing spot on, that looks like it's 2 to 3" added height and filling.

Love the Blackbird. My Dad bought one new. It took him years to work his way up to it. Got ill and sold it. He had an operation and recovered, but the bike was long gone. Anyway, years later at work, spoke about the bike to my mate and his relative had bought Dad's bike. I then did my test, managed to buy the bike back and surprised Dad with it. Great bike, many miles touring the UK and abroad, amazing times with Dad and my 2 Brothers, all on Blackbirds, so quick and reliable, and still good value, buy now before everyone finds out, Honda quality very impressive.

Great review, capturing the essence of The Blackbird. I bought the last new one (boxed) in Western Australia, in 2008. I've ridden it across the country from Perth to Tasmania, camping with 100kg of luggage....and done low 11 sec standing 1/4's on it at the raceway. In 14 years of ownership since new, nothing (and i mean nothing) has failed on it. It's hard to think of another bike that is so fast, sturdy, comfy, robust and well-built in equal measure. The pinnacle of Honda quality. I even shipped it with me to the UK...and would never, ever part with it. Other bikes have come and gone.

Rode one back in the late 90s after a friend at work loaned me his (I was riding a CBR 600 FR at the time) and fell in love with it! Whilst a different genre of machine to mine, I was blown away with the combination of grunt comfort and agility for such a big bike. Several friends had them and when compared to the the ZZRs, FJRs etc, the Blackbird always stood out as the best. Fabulous machines that go on forever and will tour the world with virtually zero issues. Hall of fame bike for sure 🏆🏆🏆

Wow! That brings back memories! I was very close to pull the trigger on this bike back in 1998, but ended up buying a Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm and a BMW R1150 GS instead. If you can get your hands on a Firestorm to test, go for it! You will giggle like a nun on a carrot farm when you ride it. Feels like a little 600cc but the torque will stretch your arms. One of the best bikes I've owned.

@@TheMissendenFlyer not seen 1 close up but at that price point it should be utterly flawless. My 2001 vfr800 vtec was really good the frame welds were a work of art the paint was excellent and general fit and finish were very good' its rectifier was swapped out before long before it decided to fry the battery and loom but a lot of Honda's suffer with shite rectifiers. The nc and CB range of bikes amongst others to me look below 90s quality. I looked over a newish cb500x the other day and wheel paint looked tatty plenty of fasteners all rusted up rear shock looked really scruffy etc etc. I know some bikes get abused others get cossetted but them blackbirds were just astonishing quality.... many many of them still look superb at 25 years old... Iam on the look out for a 2004/5 model to buy as Iam just fed up with modern bikes... nice video I must admit I like watching the older bike reviews more than the new stuff ✌👍

I loved mine, it was one of the few bikes her in doors would get on the back of. In fact she was so chilled on it I would quite often have to give her a nudge because she’d nod off, excuse being the engine note, it would do all I asked of it in 3rd gear, actually made me a bit of a lazy bones. Had many a discussion with purists about the linked braking mechanism, which has stood the test of time. Lovely bike, only reason I moved it on was not because of anything wrong with the bike, it was me, chubbed up and the weight on the bars got the better of me….Appreciate the trip down memory lane…..

I absolutely LOVE my XX! It's a 2002 that came to me in 2011 with about 79k miles on the odo. It's got Yoshimura cans on it and it sounds awesome. I have tried to make it more comfortable over the years but haven't ever been able to find a sweet spot. I think what I really need is a set of Heli-bars. At the moment I've settled on a clamp system that mounts a super bike bar to bring the controls up and back quite a bit from the spot they sit with the clip ons. I still think that this is the most beautiful motorcycle on the road, bar none.

Glad you do these classic reviews. I bought a 2001 last year, super smooth, relentless power and composure. Also like the CBS a lot which I didn't expect. I just struggle with the comfort; fitted VFR bars, lower footpegs and MRA screen but still find myself fidgeting after an hour on straight roads. Steering was a bit slow for me but a 4mm spacer on the shock mount sorted that.

I’ve had a late near mint carb blackbird for nearly 8 years and despite my good intentions to sell it when I’ve getting another main bike, I can never bring myself to! If it wasn’t for space I wouldn’t even consider it. Since I got a GTR 1400 which is now replaced by a BMW K1600gt, the bird rarely gets ridden, but this video has whetted my appetite to get back out on it again!

Another fantastic review (as always) Andy. Have to agree with you that this bike was a significant evolutionary step, but the reason, as I recall at the time, was because it challenged Kawasaki's dominance of this genre rather than actually create the genre itself. I once owned the amazing GPZ900R which one could argue was the first game changer for this kind of bike. Then came the mighty ZZR1100 which was the ultra-fast Sport-Touring benchmark for a good while until the Super Blackbird came along and later the Hayabusa, before Kawasaki got involved again with the current crop of bewilderingly powerful bikes......wonderful machines, all of which i think any of us would still be happy to own if we could just fit one more in the garage 🙂

Loved watching this, I have one the same colour (2004) and absolutely love it. I bought it as a all year round commuter, tourer/bike for longer rides out etc. (I have a k4 GSXR 750 for fun which I've owned for 17yrs but I can no longer ride it for much more than an hr without beginning to ache, getting old now, just not ready to quite give up owning a sports bike for the 200m or so i do a year between mot's) I simply cannot fault the Blackbird though . Had it 4yrs now, just about to turn to 29k miles and I've considered selling it and getting a 2017 onwards ZZR1400 performance sport, but in all honesty I really don't need to. Will most likely hold onto this one, she is still in great condition and although I use her all year round, I have a car too so don't use it during the depths of winter when the salt is on the road. I think you are right, it's a classic and I think I'm going to keep hold of it and just put it aside in the garage as opposed sell it. I paid £3500 four yrs ago with 21k miles on it, heated grips, bar risers, comfort gel seat, givi rack and 3 boxes, headlight bulb upgrade, sports exhausts (and originals) I don't think I will ever lose anything on it 😁

Great review, thank-you. I completely agree bikes of this era are now fantastic value for money. My 2c worth. Two years ago I happened upon a mint, low mileage 5th generation VFR 800. The price asked was substantially less than I’ve paid for a reasonable quality bicycle, couldn’t resist. The intention was to compliment my much more modern GS. The Honda is now 21 years old but doesn’t feel a day of it. I’ve enjoyed it so much I’ve let the BMW go, just wasn’t using it. 5th gen. is a pre-VTEC model, it’s smooth, linear, characterful and not emissions strangled 110hp is certainly more than enough for me on today’s roads. I particularly appreciate the excellent tracking in side winds, stable handling, comfortable ride, precision over-engineered feel, simplicity of use and the clarity of the traditional dash. It’s easy to manoeuvre, manageable seat hight, not top heavy, only 210kg wet and has excellent economy an easy 220+ mile range on 21L tank. The gear driven cam V4 sound is so sweet it makes the bike enjoyable even at lower speeds, this is important to me. I use it for day leisure rides and multi day tours, sometimes camping. I honestly can’t see myself ever selling it. Two practical downsides for me. No ABS, ride accordingly. Secondly, passenger comfort reportedly inferior to GS.

Re. your comment about the seat height, just looking at the shape of the pillion perch, that seat has been re-upholstered. Probably explains why it is so comfortable - I did the same to mine and fitted peg lowering brackets. Even more comfort and extra leg/knee room (I'm 6'1"). PS. @Omsracer1

@@TheMissendenFlyer the Fi bikes are a little bit smoother but many people prefer the carby bikes because they are some much less complex and are supposed to be faster. Personally I cant detect a great deal of difference. I was surprised you found the suspension smooth, as most find it a bit harsh as again it is very simple on the front and too hard, on the spring, on the rear. The motor as you found is a delight. If only they could use it in a modern day Honda or bring back a new Blackbird as Suzuki did with the Hayabusa, I know many people would buy one. Regards Peter

Hi flyer ,rode a friends new one in 2000 and remember being disappointed, until I’d thought about it I’d been doing 135 at one point without thinking about it , bought one new in 2002 and cover 30,000 miles on it ,I was a real Honda fan at the time also had a hornet 600 and a 954 fireblade , but the blackbird was so good , fast ,smooth , remember doing 900 miles in a day around Scotland at ballistic speeds ,rumours in the press that Honda were making a 1300 , but the engineers couldn’t make anything any better and I’d been hanging on for the rumoured upgrade , until it was shelved for the vfr1200 , that killed it for me so I bought a zzr1400 , if you climbed onto the kawasaki blindfolded ( while stationery obviously ) you wouldn’t have known it wasn’t a blackbird ,untill you rode it and it had 20 per cent more power, did 30,000 mile on that to , but the blackbird still holds a great memories and to be totally honest I’ve have one as a keep forever bike it was that good ,ps I never got one with the hayabusa ,why don’t you take zzr1400 out 🏍🏍👍👍

Good review. took me down memory lane like many others below. Glad you wound it on a bit at the end there as I found its performance was incredibly linear. Up to 7k it would build but then it would just give more and more to the redline. I used to call it the time machine because it could shrink distances so efficiently. Took my 2001 fuel injected blue one back lane scratching, over the Alps getting caught in blizzards, enjoyed it at Brands Hatch and Silverstone track days, commuted and achieved my highest ever speed on a public road - in Germany of course ;). Zero mechanical or electrical problems in the 8000 miles and two years I had it. I only sold it as I did find the footpeg position a bit high and would get sore hips after an hour or so. Am 6'1" for reference. Some taller people might not find it too comfortable for long motorway stints.

Nice review MF! The blackbird name is also associated with the Lockheed SR71 spy plane. Honda even had advertisements when this bike was released using the SR71 and this (then) new bike in both print and video ads. Also, Kawasaki deserves recognition for starting this genre in 1988 with the 137hp ZX10, followed by the 147hp ZX11 C model (single ram air) in 1990, and the 147hp ZX11 D model (twin ram air) in 1993. The current 200hp 2022 Kawasaki H2SX sports-tourer is simply a modern day evolution of the ZX11. All very comfy, and very powerful.

I have to disagree on your belief that it was the beginning of the hyper bike. I think it was the ZZR1100. The CBR had a slightly higher top but was weaker at rolling on at about 60mph than the ZZR. The later D model was the quickest. It was the fastest bike in the world for 6yrs. Sorry, I’ve just read the other 200 comments stating the above.

I agree the ZZR1100 was similar to the Blackbird as I had two of them however my trusty 1999 Hayabusa ate them for breakfast, I still own it today and it has never missed a beat In nearly 24 years, as mine is the original unmolested full power 220mph speedo version it’s probably worth treble the Blackbirds due to its kudos and reputation whereas the Blackbirds name has been long forgotten.

Andy, I think trying to define who invented the hyper bikes is a difficult one, the GPZ900, RX1000, ZX10, ZZR1100 , the Blackbirds father CBR1000 makes it a tough one, I’ve owned over 120 bikes and I rated my 98’ Blackbird (owned a Daft X11 too) as one of the best bikes I’ve owned, handles well, brakes ok (linked brakes) goes like stink, munches miles, and it’s the only bike that I took a girl for a pillion ride , and when we returned, she said she had an Org*sm , much to her boyfriends disgust ! 😁
