Chills down my spine every time I watch this. Not a big horse racing fan but this transcended the sport. Nov 1st 2005 - Australia had just lost the Ashes unexpectedly, Swans won the GF for the first time in 72 yrs and then this all in the matter of 6 weeks. Amazing stuff.
I was in high school when this race happened, watching this with the whole class.. Anyways just when they were about to jump, the teacher asked 1 kid to turn the volume up. So he gets up and turns the tv off, thinking it would be funny. Anyways another kid got up and absolutely spear tackled him to the ground, making him cry... It was an awesome race and so was Makybe Diva, 1 of the greats!!
I was there, at the 300m and I will never forget how the crown erupted when she took the lead, I cried, everyone around me cried, spontaneous hugs all round, it was one of those moments I still feel to this day.
Mate I’m glad I read your comment this is still my go to sports moment I could only imagine the emotion of being on the ground for this historic moment
I was there too, in the Lawn Stand, had a beautiful view of the seas parting and her just coming through. I was screaming and crying and jumped up on my seat and pulled my mum up next to me and we just went nuts. And travelling home everyone was just reliving the moment and just couldn't stop smiling. Still get chills and tears when i watch this today
If you look carefully in the final straight, there is a horse who cuts off half the field to open up the win for Makybe. The horse that comes second is part of the field that was cut off.
On a Jeune’s run was never hampered once it found open air. Had to go around Xcellent but that’s about it, it just came from too far back. The run was monstrous though
wow.. just watched this 1st time since 2005, those last couple of furlongs still give me goosebumps. 11 years later! crazy, how good was she was , everybit as good as she's remembered and more... only a handful her class in my 25 years watching racing
+Daniel Fogarty Watch On A Juene come home. He had to runaround heels three times @ the top of the straight & still took 6 lengths off her over the last furlong! The quinella paid $210 in NSW. Happy memories.
This was one of the very few Melbourne Cups where prior to the race it was a pretty sure bet that you could feel confident backing the favourite and it was going to win. To win 3 consecutive Melbourne Cups, I don't think that this will ever be equalled by another horse.
Im American, so I never really followed horse racing in other countries, or this horse for that matter. Ive watched the Kentucky Derby since the 80s, and one thing ive learned is that the best horse doesnt always win that race, because the fields are 20 horses deep, and so much stuff can happen to prevent a better horse from winning. For a horse to win 3 consecutive races in such massive fields, is pretty incredible, and if she was up against males, thats just amazing, and every bit as impressive as Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra, who are the best fillies ive ever seen.
What a legend! The greatest staying mare of all time. To win 3 Cup's, Cox Plate, Australian Cup, and should have won a Caulfield Cup as well when unlucky and beaten a nose. Must be sad for connections of On A Jeune though, that horse was right behind her at the 1200m mark only to take a different route and flash home for second.
i loved her so much i had a tattoo of her name southern cross and lucky horse shoe. Also all the people saying Winx is the best horse we've had...just wait til she carries 58kg to win her 3rd Melbourne Cup in a row. The Diva won Cox Plate...BMW...Memsies etc too
Do you think 58kg was a fair weight considering it was a 3rd attempt? She shouldve been up to 65kg. She got in very light to a handicap considering her record.
@virginiafield. My daughter asked me to put $20 on Makybe for her but 'friends' talked me out of it and they put it on another horse that didn't even place. I borrowed $90 to give to my daughter because I didn't know how much $20 would have won her. And all these years later I still can't find how much I should have given for my daughter's $20 bet. Do you remember or know where I can find how much Makybe Diva's third Melbourne Cup win would have paid out for $20? It's what has brought me to this video and to you. My daughter said nothing when I gave her the $90 but she looked perplexed and it's been breaking my heart ever since. I feel like I betrayed her for not placing the bet on the horse that my daughter loves and if I could give her the correct amount and talk with her about it maybe I can ease my undeserving heart. 😭😞 I have cried buckets about it and am crying now. I try not to look back but this just haunts me. Can you please help me find what the odds were for Makybe Diva's third Melbourne Cup win was?
I literally made an account to tell you I appreciate you for being about the..stuff that isn't just dresses and the winner of a glamour race in the moment. Lonhro was a beautiful horse. My favourite ever, for whatever reason, was Might and Power. Followed by Sunline. I was young. 9 when Might and Power won the Melbourne Cup! Other kids loved, like, kids cartoons - I loved those horses. I just googled, and Might and Power is actually still alive and living it up at legends of the turf. 28 year old me should book it over there. 9 year old me would be so excited to get a photo.
It's a bit ridiculous giving a horse that's already won two Melb Cups and had significant WFA wins only 58kg in the race.. Super Impose had never won the Cup or over 2 miles and he was previously given 60kg as an example. The VRC obviously saw the marketing potential of a 3rd Melb Cup win for the Diva and the handicapper wasn't allowed to do their job.
Mate the issue is the top weight for a melb cup is 60, and being that Makybe was a mare they have a 2kg handicap on the male horses. She had the top weight she could get, which was 58kg.
Top weight is not 60kg... the rules state it must be at least 57kg's. Weight in and of itself is irrelevant... it's the weight comparison between horses that is the determining factor. The handicapper needs to work out the relative weight. In this race Makybe Diva carried the same weight as Vinnie Roe, who had been rated the world's best stayer the previous 3 years in a row. Had Super Impose raced in this race I assure you he would not have been assigned 60kg's.
Don't know that I agree. This was an extraordinary achievement no matter how you look at it. In a huge field over two miles against the males - to my way of thinking it was an incomparable performance.
Hey Prue Eales, why didnt notify your brother of the passing of his father, why did you burry him without your brother knowing? Thats an abuse of human rights. I call out my abusers, and get shut down for it.
The best horse did not win that race. Put Glen Boss on On A Juene and the result would have been so much different. Have a look where On A Juene is on the home turn... only a length behind Makybe Diva. Boss goes straight through the middle and Gauci goes via the carpark on On A Juene. It should have won by three lengths conservatively!
Stupid comment.Makybe diva was clearly the best horse in the field.58 kgs for a female horse is insane.Weight carrying record for a female horse. No horse has carried that weight to win since then. The second horse had much less weight hence the good finish.
@@rusticshiraz1268 im aware of Darwin im also aware that horses aren't supposed to carry humans let alone forced to sprint to they bleed in their lungs via a whip carrying lunatic that kills them whenever they can't run
Maybe you should stop pretending that you care about these animals. If you really cared about horses, you would go and buy an abused horse from the auctions who is headed for the knackery if it doesnt sell. Put your money where your mouth is if you care so much. But oh, I forgot, you only care on one day of the year on melbourne cup day and give zero fucks about all of the normal horses who are headed to the knackery every summer because their owners cannot afford to feed them in the drought. Continue sipping your almond lattes in expensive trendy cafes when you could buy a horse for $50 and save a life. Enjoy your lattes tosser
@@rusticshiraz1268 one, almond lattes taste like crap. Two, I only talk it about it on Melbourne cup day because that's when its brought to national attention. Why should I have to commit my whole life to fix something that you do wrong for you to realise its wrong? Its messed up. Its not my job to fix all your fkd up issues. But ill call it out when I see it
