2005 NAS Oceana Airshow - F-14 Tomcat Demo (LAST TIME)

On Sunday, Sept. 18th, at the 2005 NAS Oceana Air Show located in Virginia Beach, VA. Presented by VF-101 "Grim Reapers" was the F-14 Tomcat tactical flight demonstration, ONE LAST TIME IN HISTORY!!
Note: You might've have seen this same video that was edited a different way by me and uploaded on a different video site called metacafe.com, but somebody somehow downloaded it and uploaded it onto his own channel and taking credit for it without my permission. His own link to it is right here at • tha last f-14 tomcat demo . His youtube channel is "Skylife" or @SkyLifeFlyer, and his formerly youtube title was "jorgemdllin", and I have kindly asked him to put it down because it's my own video, but he would not agree to it and he started cursing and swearing at me and calling me bad names online and he refuses to do so. And it looks like youtube will not do me any favors to delete it from his site. So it looks like i'll just have no choice but to let him get away with it, unfortunately.

Spelled “Corps” incorrectly, which is unlikely for a former Marine officer. The F-14 was a navy fighter, not USMC. 41 years in the Service would be on the far end of time, even for a flag officer. I smell bs.

If you can find video of any air shows from Iran, they have the Tomcats flying multiple times in every single air show that I have seen!!!! Search for videos and watch how the Iranian F-14 pilots talk about them and the crazy stories they have to tell about flying The Tomcat in combat! They ABSOLUTELY love them as much as we do! They call it the Golden eagle :) They've upgraded the engines and the weapons systems and the radar systems! They developed and manufacture the parts and technology to advance their old F-14A Tomcats to at least A+, not quite the level of F-14B that we had, but they are STILL flying them! Says a LOT about how well designed and durable the design is if it is maintained properly :)

As soon as I heard there was gonna be a sequel, I immediately thought that a superb plot would be that one way or another all modern fighter jets became grounded or destroyed, leaving no air defence... until someone mentioned there was a stash of F 14’s hidden away somewhere and they had to save the day... maybe far fetched/impossible but how epic would that be to see them in the new movie saving the day ?

@@MeMyselfI_69 They had an amazing concept with AST-21, but Dick Cheney and his Hornet mafia wanted the money to be routed to the far less capable Super Hornet with the promise of it being much cheaper. However, Super Hornet as it turns out, ended up costing $5+ billion in development. The Tomcats especially B/D variants ran circles around the Rhino when it came out. One pilot who transitioned from Tomcat to Rhino said, it was like going from a super fast Porsche to a Beetle. Grumman pegged AST-21 at far less cost because the airframe already was so ahead of its time on the Tomcat, that minimal changes were needed for the design,

I remember my first evening spent on deck of USS Nimitz walking across the fantail and seeing my first image of an F-14 parked on fantail, six tie down chains securing it and the sun setting directly behind it with an orange glow leaving it in a dark brown shadow. The wings set to stow position giving this appearance of a fly watching me as I walk by. And I was able to spend the next 3 years with my name painted on the nose wheel well door. The best 3 years of my life...I'm 64 now and every day I think of how fortunate I was to be a part of the best plane ever created..... machinist mate 3rd class/ plane Capt. VF-41 USS Nimitz. 78-81...

I was at this show. I was in VA Beach for my cousin's wedding. His father, a retired USN Captain got us passes for the officers' tent out on the tarmac. Best air show experience I have EVER had. I was honored to see the final flight of a legend in US air power. Seeing the Tomcats, the Hornets, the Phantoms, and the Intruders in one show was just amazing. The Blue Angels didn't fail to impress and a JATO takeoff and reverse-thrust landing by Fat Albert was simply mind-blowing. And that rocket truck... yikes. Days like that one make you proud to be a part of the greatest and mightiest nation on earth.

@@juanmora9148 The F-14 was an absolutely magnificent machine, but had some rather problematic issues: high maintenance requirements, relatively poor low-speed maneuverability compared even contemporary fighters, and oh, yeah, a rather unnerving tendency to explode due to the failure of 1st stage combustion fans and subsequent failure of the containment belt in that area. Tbh, all two of those things could be addressed in general overhauls (Super Tomcat-21's), but the third one has to do with the fact it wasn't designed to dogfight, it was designed primarily as an interceptor, but later morphed in to a "multi-role" fighter. However, the thing that primarily killed it was Dick Cheney's absolutely hatred of Grumman. There are F-14's still flying today, but ya'd have to be Iranian to see them. Such a pity the F14 has gone to the bone yard, fantastic aircraft. She was the best jet powered carrier borne aircraft ever built and I personally think that the United States Navy would have kept them if it was viable to achieve, obviously the Tomcat had reached its finite fatigue life and would have cost a fortune in upgrades and maintenance cost, and that’s assuming that the airframe was still viable to extend its life, its truly saddening to see such an iconic aircraft disappear from the sky. Charles Harwood I wish that could be the case with the F14s as they were my favs but all of them belong to museums and aren’t able to be restored. There aren’t any parts either. The US purposely did this because they did not want the Iran to get a hold of any F-14s or parts because they were such good fighters and were never replaced with a better plane. The only reason why they were retired was because the airframes were getting old and too expensive to maintain. So they replaced it with the shittier, but MUCH cheaper F-18 superhornet. It was planed to make new f-14s but with newer technology witch was the smarter option. But the military didn’t want to spend the money. So now the military regrets getting rid of the F14s but there’s no going back now. That’s the sad story of their retirement. My point is that the US made it impossible for anyone to get a hold of and restore and F14.

I was there working the Airshow that day. It was sad to see the last demo. I got out in July of 06. I saw the last Tomcat leave Oceana in April of 2006. It was a sight to see. I was on Night-check. And was working in the Fuel-pits. And 11 F-14’s rolled past the pits and all the pilots waved goodbye. Everyone inside the hangers were outside waiting to see them take off. 10 of the 11 were airborne. The last one was flown by the CO of that squadron. I believe it was VF-101. All 10 were circling around then as he got airborne he went straight up and then met up with the rest of them and rode off into the sunset. I can still see it. And now my 8yr old son is so into the new Topgun movie. And he thinks he’s gonna fly one. It’s hard to explain t him that they are not around in the USA. They are no longer air worthy. The only air worthy F-14s are located in Iran according to a article I read online.

The life i might have had in 1987 i was set to go to the Navy and with my excellent math grades a possible early seat at the Academy but my eyesight degenerated really bad six months before finishing High School. Every time I see an F-14 all i get is these mixed emotions but mostly sadness because ever since my first Tomcat toy when I was 6yrs old till this day all i ever wanted to do was fly even for just one day the holy grail "F-14 Tomcat".

Crazy to me that the Eagle is still the back none of the air force while this got retired while it was still in its prime.

You know how kids had childhood heroes such as comic book characters? Well, my childhood hero was the Navy's Tomcat all the way. I'm a proud Navy brat since birth.

Amazing bird! You can see the airframe shape when it's on the ground then see it flex when the wings are forward in a banking turn. Super engineering!!!

I never got a chance to see this plane fly in real life. Just a static display at one air show. Never seen it fly. Super sad about that. But I lived Near Mconnel AFB so I always heard seen and felt the B-1B's landing and taking off full after burners. I felt privileged to be there. As i kid eating dinner with the family then everything starts rumbling like windows and dishes. I would run outside and see four torches with wings flying through the skies.

Because of this plane alot of conflicts were avoided from the 70s until retirement. Even though there were incidents and a couple of engagements. Things never truly escalated .

Incredible aircraft. I think most likely the most beautful fighter plane ever built. We always respected the Tomcat. It did not bleed speed like the F16/F18 and F15 high low speed high Gs turns, so it could get its weapons on you real quick. That’s what the variable wings gave you. That adaptability at high low altitude engagements. With the NGAD, there will be mission parameters that are more aligned to the F111 and F14 over what we are running now.

I'm neither an engineer nor a pilot so what I'm about to say may not make sense to some of you, but I've always been impressed by the strength of the front wings pivots. Normally, moving parts are not as strong as fixed ones, so those pivots impress me a lot. Was it because of those the F-14 was costly to fly and maintain? What are the reasons behind this design, over fixed wings? Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who can answer these questions for me.

@YZach This is not entirely true, F-14 has always been one of the best naval aircraft that the U.S. Navy ever used. Remember that the Grumman Corporation faced substantial contractual penalties if the jet it produced faild to meet the Navy's specifications. The Navy itself has admitted back in 1974. by ADM James L. Holloway III - Chief of Naval Operations, that the F-14 is the best aircraft for any job that needs to be done, and it performs magnificently.
