Bonderman pitched a gem in game 4. Almost had a complete-game-shut-out He was a rookie for the Tigers in 2003, and he almost lost 20 games that season (19 losses)

This was Gary Sheffield final season with the Yankees, as he will be traded to the Tigers in the offseason, and Sheffield will be reunited with Leyland (1997 Marlins).

The Yankees had Murderers Row (and Cano) for 162 regular season games, game 1 vs DET, and the first 4 innings of game 2. And then............... they didn't

One thing to note about these 06 playoffs is who's not around this October- Boston and Atlanta, a pair of recent fall staples.

Kenny Roger's had a nice postseason run, thanks to the pine tar on his hat.

The Yankee offense was so appalling this series. They basically didn’t show any effort in Games 3 or 4. Granted, lousy outings from Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright certainly didn’t help set the tone, but for THAT team to look so lost and lifeless, was embarrassing. I don’t know what it is but it seemed that the Yanks were just at their worst in the playoffs when they played the Tigers (‘06 & ‘12 were disgraces).

This was Randy Johnson final season with the Yankees, as he will be traded in the offseason to Arizona. Yankees sent him right back to Arizona.

The Tigers certainly flipped the script on us with the incredible out of nowhere start, then the shaky 50 game finish, and threw us off course with that shocking final weekend sweep by KC to blow the division and seemingly walking into a lion's den And then they flipped the script AGAIN with that game 2 rally

Those were 3 brutal losses to get swept at home to the 100 loss Royals. Heartbreaking losses, two of them in extra innings

Like 2002, an unexpected ALCS now looms over the horizon. DET vs OAK Who ya got?

Tigers. Im still extremely surprised that the Athletics made the postseason in 2006, even winning 90+ games. They should have won like 82 games max, by looking at their 2006 roster production.

Imagine telling a baseball fan in 2003 when DET lost 119 and NYY won another pennant that the Tigers would win a playoff series over the Yankees in less than 5 years

Imagine telling Tiger fans their NFL team will go 0-16 in 5 years. In 20 years the Pistons will also be making history. A city that’s in the record books for all the wrong reasons.

What a NIGHTMARE Division Series it was for AROD, just like his 2005 Division Series, mainly with Joe Torre hitting him 6th in games 1-2 and then AROD hitting 8th in game 4, wow AROD had a nightmare 2006 regular season overall, constantly getting booed and not coming through in important moments AROD was also HORRENDOUS defensively in 2006. AROD had 24 errors in 2006, while only having 12 errors in both 2004 and 2005

for most players, hitting .290 with 35 HR's and 121 RBI would be a career year But A-Rod is not most players I think back to that September 2006 Sports Illustrated cover ("His successes are often overshadowed by his failures. Despite his extraordinary accumulated numbers, New York fans are quick to discount his contributions.")

@@chrisuncleahmad I think in an episode of the radio show Mike and the Mad Dog, of when the Yankees got eliminated, one of the two of them said "That was probably the most unproductive .300-30-100 season in MLB history", due to AROD failing to come through in important moments in 2006, and only getting home runs and RBI when the Yankees were winning by a lot or losing by alot

A-Rod was awful in 2005 and 2006, no doubt about it. But I would add that Randy Johnson was just as bad and almost gets a complete pass for his failures because of how bad A-Rod was.

I remembered that everyone thought that 2006 season was going to be for sure Joe Torre’s final season as Yankees manager, especially after the disappointing endings to 2004-2005-2006, especially with both Joe Girardi and Lou Pinella available. But the Yankees brought back Torre for the 2007 season, and Pinella went to the Cubs, and Girardi I think was on the Yankees was one of the coaches. Bottom line, the Yankees seemed to want to keep Torre until the end of the 2009 season, with 2008 being the final season in Yankee Stadium 2, and 2009 being the first season of Yankee Stadium 3.

Actually, in 2007, Joe Girardi worked MLB on FOX for Saturday games, replacing Lou Piniella.

This is the Tigers first postseason appearance since both the 1984 season and the 1987 season. 2006 is also the Tigers first non-losing / winning season since their 1993 season. This is also the beginning of the Tigers just dominating the Yankees in postseason play.

For the second consecutive postseason, AROD has no RBI's He had no RBI and a low batting average against the Angels in 2005 Division Series He had no RBI and a low batting average against the Tigers in 2006 Division Series AROD in the 2007 season has the option to opt-out of his contract after the 2007 season, so you know AROD will have a sensational season and look for a new contract / contract extension. And in the 2007 Division Series against Cleveland, AROD only had one RBI. He had a better batting average in the 2007 ALDS against Cleveland, than against the 2005 Angels and 2006 Tigers. But his batting average was still low against Cleveland with .267

My first yankee playoff series heartbreak. I fell in love with the Yankees at 10 years old in 2006 despite going to many games before that. My first ever game was David wells perfect game in 98 not that I remember but thanks dad go yanks😀 every time I see the tigers I feel like I’m 10 again 😢

The 2006 Yankees lineup was just something else, 1 through 9. To this day, I still consider the 2006 Yankees to be the greatest lineup in MLB history, even more than those Cleveland Indians teams from 1994-2001, even more than those RSOX teams from 2003-2004. I remembered that Jim Leyland during this Division Series said that he barely got any sleep thinking of that Yankees lineup before each game.

Plus Sheffield and Matsui missed half of that year with injuries. They would of scored a thousand runs.

The loss of this series eventually lead to the death of Corey Lidle. It’s sad to think about.

Regarding the 2006 Tigers regular season (Since SW561 doesn’t have the 2006 regular season): Tigers in 2006 didn’t exactly have anyone special, but everyone on their lineup and pitching staff was very good, kinda like the Yankees from 1995-2001. Only two hitters had a slugging percentage of over .500 (Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen), and no one had 30 home runs. But no one in their lineup was an easy out. Tigers also had a very good bench. Their starting pitchers were nothing special in 2006, but with Pudge leading the way at the catcher position, they all pitched effective games with ERA under 4.00 But the X-Factor for the Tigers was the fiery Jim Leyland leading the way; he made sure that they never got comfortable and to always play better than the other team each game.

“Greatest lineup ever” “Murderers Row And Cano” “Yankees in 3” Did you forget the Tigers led all of BASEBALL in pitching and defensive efficiency? Like the old saying goes, good pitching WILL stop good hitting! So proud of my Tigers! Nobody said they could beat Chicago , and NOBODY said they could beat NY. They didn’t just beat ‘em, they tied those pinstripes round their necks! Keep proving them wrong, boys!
