This is a 2006 Ford Ranger with the 2.3L Duratec I4 . It has an internal engine noise. The culprit is a broken timing chain tensioner. It's about $900.00 of work at a local shop and about $1200-1400 at a Ford dealer. This happened a second time at 99,000 Miles after fixing this at around 80,000 miles . Timing chain was "stretching" again.

It was a stretched timing chain. All of the parts have been replaced now and she runs good and quiet again!

They don't stretch. They get elongated

@roadracerGT I bought the truck new with just a few miles on it. I have always changed the oil on time and used motorcraft synthetic blend 5W20 and I have run a little sea foam in it here and there. It has been a good truck but compared to my volvos that all have over 200k + and don't have these issues I still am disappointed . But I am keeping this this truck for a while. If the motor every goes down in it I wanted to import a diesel that put in the ranger that you can get over seas.

I know this is an old post but I recently had the same problem with my 2007 ford escape, 2.3 duratec. The timing chain stretched out causing it to jump 2 teeth. I have yet to take it apart but I am guessing the pistons and valves have collided causing major damage. There were no clues of anything being wrong prior to this happening. Drove home from work everything was fine stopped at the corner store, came back out started it up made a few loud noises stopped running, and hasnt started since. I replaced the timing chain and tensioner, nothing. Next step is taking the head off and going from there.

it ended up doing the same thing 20,000 miles later! I traded it in on a F250. I really dont understand why it kept having this problem because i always used motocraft oil and was very attentive to maintenance.

I will never expect anyone to manufacture cars the way they used to so this ranger was my last new car purchase . I will always buy older vehicles.

Timing Chain Tensioner ! Timing Chain has skipped One Tooth, in turn has destroyed, some lifters, built into the Rocker Gear. Needs new tensioner,(Up spec Version) recheck Timing Chain, with 6 mm Drill Bits, 30mm on the Crank, Replace All Rocker Gear, Complete. Reassemble and Pray ! These Powerful Duratech Engines, where finally sorted by 2008. In 06, Ford had many Court Cases,,,,,,,,,,,We where the Guinea Pigs (Typical Ruthless Henry Mentality) Finally, there where quite a few refinements by 08, so the maket where not faced with Total Head replacement, every time the Chain Jumped "two teeth",,, LOL. ie, Sacrificial Lifters, along with Sacrificial Rockers, etc ! Hope This Helped,,,,, But by this time, you've unsold the vehicle, based on your earlier comments ! Cheers !

The chain had "stretched" which really means it had worn and the tensioner could no longer take up the slack. The chain was replaced a long with the tensioner and everything that goes with the timing chain. The truck ran great for another 20k I believe it was and then at 99k the same thing started to happen again. I paid $800 to fix it the first time and I didn't feel like dealing with it ever again so I sold the truck and bought a 2008 F250 super duty , which I needed anyways to do the hauling I was getting into . I can't so the duratec was a great motor . But my father has a 2008 ranger whith no issues and he already has 100k on it . So maybe it was just a lemon engine I got. Ford had nothing to say about it either which disappointed me as I bought the truck brand new in 2006 . I still got decent money on a trade in for it , it being a ranger and all.

At 135k of absolutely abusing my 2005 2.3 5 speed ranger. Hell I race it in autocross. Have never heard of this issue. Bummer man. I'll be sure to check replace my timing chain/tensioner when I do my cosworth build.

I think I got a lemon engine to be honest. I always treated this truck well. it could have been an oil pump issue . that is the only thing I can think would cause that chain to wear out. The same thing happened 20K later and I traded the truck in because I didnt want to deal with this issue again. I know guys swear by these Duratec engines but I got the short end of the stick on this one.

@@SmokeyJa this engine is made by Mazda. They had tons of problems with these 2.3s grenading with no warning. I have an mazda 3 with this motor with 240k on it...all original nothing internal ever touched...very rare to see a 2.3 with that many miles...got it cheap.

premium isnt any better it just has a higher octane rating. it is needed for higher compression engines so that they do not have preignition issues. "ping"

GunToitin, I have an 02 with same engine and 91k with no issues....I suspect if you got it used the prior owner may have cheated on some oil changes. I run premium every 5 to 10 tanks and fuel system cleaner often. I also run a premium oil filter and only Pennzoil or Quaker State at 4.5k to 5k.

No I decided to leave it to a mechanic I knew. From what he told me there is no timing marks on the engine itself so he had a frustrating time changing the tensioner and chain. All said and done, the chain itself stretched. The tensioner had tensioned all the way out . Although the other parts were still good I went ahead and had them all changed out while the mechanic was in there. I have changed a lot parts on engines in my day and swapped them out and so on but newer vehicles can be troubli

Could you help me, I am looking to find pictures of where hoses are routed on the 2.3l duratec but am having little to no luck elsewhere. I need to confirm that the hose that comes off the thermostat hose branches off to a smaller 1/2" hose that leads to the EGR. Also if the rear of your intake manifold makes a total of three vacuum connections. Thanks.

Dealing with this now on my Land Rover. It will eventually stop running on you. Symptoms are the sound you are getting, skipping, loss of power, and some ticking that mimikcs a vehicle that is very low on oil. Mechanic says its the timing chain. Costing me 500 in labor and 200 in parts. Smh...

It is the Timing chain guides
@SmokeyJa
@SmokeyJa 5 лет назад
Emilylo Mayako it is called a “stretched timing chain” . What it is is when the chain becomes worn and becomes longer and the tensioner can no longer tighten the chain. The guides were found to be good when the chain was replaced but they were replaced with new ones anyways. The same problem happened at 99,000 miles, just 19,000 miles after the chain, guides, and tensioner were replaced.

It's most Likely your intake runner flap. If your looking for an adventure you can remove your intake and remove the butterfly flap. Just be sure you reconnect the vacuums back up to the actuator. I have spent a lot of time money and effort trying to make our ranger run right and have concluded that it will never run very well because it was never designed to do so. Anyways... Just check your lines which run from the mid bottom of the intake to the back of the head between the fire wall. Next time buy a dodge ram and you won't have as much trouble. If only the ford ran like my ram.
@SmokeyJa
@SmokeyJa 10 лет назад
Look at the reply to the comment above. It was a "stretched" timing chain which means it was a worn timing chain. Something with the engine was causing the timing chain to wear out prematurely . What I decided to do is buy a 3/4 ton ford f250 super duty and I don't have these problems . Dodge has their own share of problems as well like building transmissions that don't last very long . Had to replace 3 in a previous vehicle we owned . The conclusion it auto makers don't make vehicles very well anymore but research on the super duty line and the 5.4l v8 led me to buy the f250 with a HD manual 6 speed trans.

Don't buy it build it. You can build it to be stronger better and faster. Buy an older engine and drop it on and wrench on that. The new stuff is garbage.
@SmokeyJa

I agree the new stuff usually sucks . I have 7 other vehicles I've been working on and some of those I've already "built" the newest being 1988 . I need at least one vehicle I don't want to work on . That's why I bought the F250. Great truck . Hauls it's ass off .
