I love the Mountaineers! As my name tells, I'm not from the U.S but I was here during that season. I stayed with a family in West Virginia then and we watched every game. I remember after this one we all stood up and cheered. They started singing Country Roads and, I didn't know why then, I joined in. I hope to come back again soon and see them again. GO MOUNTAINEERS!
Clearly, you are a WV fan. A "best bowl" doesn't happen when one team doesn't start playing until they spot the other team 28 points. Had GA come to play, hands down they win the game. But it is, what it is. OU. When big game Stoops was know as Big Lame Stoops. That game was his 4 loss in his last 5 bowl games. Clemson. Yep, WV stomped Clemson but ask any Clemson fan if they would trade that game for what has happened since. Clem 8-2 in bowls, WV 1-5. Ha From a historic standpoint, nothing about those wins were epic.
@@coltonhorstman5248 Ut oh! I feel your pain. It seems pretty obvious, Herby can't win the big one. If GA gets a redo against Bama, then OU gets a redo against GA. They take 1 back and lose another. Net result 1-3 in one year on games he should be 3-1 or 4-0. He better win with the current QB or else GA is in trouble. More coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Georgia safety Greg Blue talked a ton of trash the week leading up to this game, saying Pat White and Steve Slaton wouldn't be able to handle "SEC speed." Four quarters later, he realized the Bulldogs couldn't handle "Mountaineer speed." He ate a big helping of crow that night.
@Joshua Haynes Honestly, WVU was difficult to defense, because the Mountaineers were the better team. More than a month to prepare for what was basically a home game for Georgia and they still had no answers for WVU all night.
This was an incredible football game by both teams. How WVA got out to a 28-0 lead is beyond me, and then Georgia has a chance to win this game! Rich Rodriguez should have stayed at WVA. He was perfect for them, and just made a bad decision to take the Michigan job after the loss to Pitt.
Tim Marsh Georgia severely overlooked WVU especially with this game being moved to Atlanta. But I agree with you 100% about Rich Rod. What type of man leaves his alma mater especially when he was still a fairly young guy and you are winning? I thought it just would have been a matter of time before they played for a national title. The Dawgs were riding high after an amazing season and didn't show the Mountaineers the proper respect.
Allen Greene no many people did, Georgia fans knew coming into the year we were going to be really good and we matched up well against the rest of the conference that year. It should have been a better year in terms of wins because eggs were laid against Florida and Auburn, even though Shockley missed the Florida game we still should have won. But in terms of the Sec championship yes they were underdogs and was a bit of a surprise win but many people believed it would happen.
@@TheJasonJackson84 GA didn't overlook WV. Mark Richt did (see pitt game last year and a bunch of others, like the 31-0 spotting to AL). Like Saban, Richt won because of the talent GA attracts. See Miami results. Look at how well Kirby has done but he has a real problem. He loses to a Bama team he was beating twice in one year and then Clemson throttles Bama by 28 shortly after the last game. Clemson was 1 score from handing Bama its worst loss in 70 bowls games. As it stands it is Bama's 3rd worst bowl loss ever. Best Bama team ever. Tua is so overrated(see 2 of last 3 games) and a piss poor sport like Cam.
I was there I was sitting in. A section with all Georgia fans me and my brother were the only WVU fans for miles it seemed we went up 21 these little twin girls from Georgia started crying lol kinda of messed up but I loved it LETS GO!!!!!
2005 had some great Bowl games. Pennsylvania State and Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden facing off against each other for the last time and PSU winning in overtime. Ohio State running all over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. A shootout against West Virginia and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and of course the greatest game of them all the classic in the Rose Bowl between Southern California and Texas. Its been awhile since you have had a great selection of Bowl games.
Allen Greene ABC Sports has been run by ESPN since 1997 and has been partnered with ESPN since 1982. They got rid of the ABC Sports branding altogether after losing most of the BCS, moving MNF to cable after being demoted to the #3 game of the week, and losing their spot in the Super Bowl rotation. ESPN/ABC did its last Super Bowl to date a little over a month after this BCS game
Rob Johnson they won all three BCS bowls they played in which are the biggest of the bowls you could play in. They most certainly won when it mattered bc non BCS bowls really didn’t matter they were just for entertainment. Keep hating
Remember watching this game at the legendary Murad’s in Charleston. After that fake punt, I’ve never seen a sports bar get so loud & crazy in my life. The Rich Rodriguez era was such a magical time. It’ll never be like that again… ever.
After getting to see only the highlights of the 2022 Championship Game, I wanted to watch this game again. I remember this game. Those Dawgs never give up.
This was an underrated BCS Bowl Game ESPECIALLY during the 2005-06 season. We all know USC/Texas was perhaps the best NC game EVER! But we tend to forget about WVU/Georgia & PSU/FSU which had some wild finishes as well. I rank the 2005-06 BCS bowls the following: 1) (Rose Bowl) USC vs Texas 2) (Sugar Bowl) WVU vs Georgia 3) (Orange Bowl) Penn St. vs Florida St. 4) (Fiesta Bowl) Ohio St. vs Notre Dame
Pete Carroll threw the USC game. People were sick of USC. Watch the game and tell me what Vince is going to do on that last play. Assumption: You didn't watch or forgot. If you knew what Vince was gonna do, don't you know the SC coaches did. Still pissed at Pete for this game and others that diminished their dominance.
R.I.P. to Gold and Blue dude. He was a content creator on here that was a West Virginia fan. He passed away early this week. He referred to this game on one of videos and shows. So, to honor he's memory I dedicate this game to him. Rest easy GBD. 🙏🏾. Country Roads.
Nothing in it for UGA, unfortunately. WVU needs to join the ACC and resurrect their football program. UGA would much rather do a home and home with Clemson, FSU, UNC, or even UVA before WVU.
Eric Barth the 05 season bcs games are in my opinion a package of some of the greatest college football games of all time no bias penn state vs Florida state Ohio State vs notre dame Georgia vs WVU and finally usc vs Texas
Rob Johnson it’s not about being pumped, it’s about how they got their ass beat the first half. Then the seconds half rolls around and now they’re pumped a lot of a sudden?
@@bigdaddystumps7930 1st, you know shit about Richt coming into games not having the team ready. "Then the seconds half rolls around and now they’re pumped a lot of a sudden?" What are you talking about 2nd half? With 14 mins left in the 2nd qtr Ga owned the rest of the game. And It wasn't a back and forth game at all. In qtrs (3-0) In pts 35-10 In time of possession In scoring drives 5-2 In scoring drives (in yds) 408-165 But you can't spot a team 28 pt in 15 mins and hope to have a chance when you are only ranked 3 places above your opponent. Also, W VA scored 17 pts off of GA turnovers. West Va called a fake punt (trick play) to seal the game because they knew they weren't gonna stop GA from at least getting in position to tie the game. Again, trick play. Yeah, part of the game, but nobody respects trick plays. Drive it down my throat when you need to mf'er.
the last Sugar Bowl game to be sponsored by Nokia, the final time the Sugar Bowl aired on both ABC Sports & ABC Radio after 37 years (1969/70-2005/06), next year, it would air on both FOX Sports & ESPN Radio, the last ABC Sports assignment for Pittsburgh Steelers great WR Lynn Swann after 30 years at ABC Sports (1976-2006), he would retire at 12:00am on April 29, 2006, also, the last game for him as the #3 sideline reporter after 7 years (1999-2005), & the last game that Brad Nessler & Bob Griese would ever announce as the #3 team after 7 years (1999-2005), the next season at ESPN they would be promoted to the #2 team.
Beginning of one of the Greatest qbs in Ncaa Football . Pat White 5-0 in bowls including senior bowl. Sugar bowl - Gator Bowl - Fiest Bowl and Tire bowl victory s . Beating Georgia - GA Tech -,Oklahoma - and UNC. 3 years later WVU BEAT CLEMSON 70-33 in Orange 🍊 bowl. Great memories. Steve Slaton and pat white studs .
I wonder had Rich Rod remained at WVU after the '07 season how much better would they have been? Would they have discovered geno smith, tavon austin, stedman bailey, charles sims, etc.?
Not a flame but I think RR just caught lightning in a bottle with Pat White, Slation, Reynaud and Schmitt showing up at WVU at the same time. People tend to forget that RR's career record at WVU prior to the 2005 season was only 28-21. He wasn't exactly tearing it up. I think he would have dropped back to 8-4 and 7-5 seasons after 2008. And good grief, I hate to think how he would be getting pistol whipped in the Big 12 right now...............not that Dana is doing anything....but at least Dana understands/knows what it's going to take to compete in the Big 12.
WVFreebyrd at least Dana is loyal to WVU they just need to regain that talent they had during the 2005-08 stint. If you lose to KU in FOOTBALL! That means the talent you have ain't cutting the mustard.
White and Slaton didn't become starters until midseason, yet WV only lost one game. I think it's a bit unfair to RR not to give him credit for building this team.
We may have lost this game, but this is a foreshadowing of the fight that defines the Dawgs. They talk about the Alabama game, but what bout starting the 2011 season 0-2 and winning out to make the SEC Championship? How about the comeback against Florida in 2010 and 2011? This game, and the Outback bowl in 2001.
I What an embarrassing loss we took in this game back then....UGHHHHH AND IRONICALLY FAST FORWRD, WE STILL CANT FINISH BIG GAMES. The last two seasons Vs Alabama!!!!2017/2018.Wondering if I will ever see another National title in my natural born life??????😠
WVU watched that SEC speed run them off the field in 2010 & 2011 against LSU and last year against Bama. UGA are a joke, they are the Clemson of the SEC.
?? those were different wv teams and wasn't lsu and bama both ranked 1 when they played? I belive the lsu game was high scoring and wv lost late and they lost a tight game with bama they have never been ran off any field by "sec speed"
@@bulldog4574 Come on. ONLY because Auburn faced (and beat) two # 1 teams back to back and had then had to face GA again in the SEC Champ. GA faced a 5-5 GA Tech team while Auburn faced #1 Bama.
