Another fine video production from me....this one shows some tips on how to change the HVAC mode control motor on a 2007 Civic EX.
Part # 79140-SNA-A01
I bought it from Newegg of all places but it was actually from a third party seller, Source One Auto Parts.
$35 shipped...they sell on Amazon too.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Don't know what happened to the audio at the end of the vid. Sorry.

@@jcx2bby So it looks like the part without the big wing gear thing is like 22 dollars on amazon and 57 with it. When you were handling it did it look like you could remove it and add it to the new part?
@jcx2bby
@jcx2bby 2 года назад
@@bggraham83 So, no promises on this since it was so long ago but....I am pretty sure the white gear is easy to remove off the center post of the motor. If you look at 6:30 in the video you can see a little clip in the center that goes over the post. I'm pretty sure that I even took it off when I was working on this just to see how it worked but again, I don't exactly remember. I think you'll be fine with the cheaper motor and some analysis of how things are connected. Good luck.

This video was sooooo helpful, thanks for posting it! I changed the Mode Control Motor in my 2010 Civic, and thanks to your video, I knew exactly what to do, knew what sockets I needed, how many screws I needed to remove, where to look for that last darn screw for the air duct that's way in the back, way up high, that you can't see unless you lie on your back with your head against the firewall! :-) The only thing missing was how to fully remove the glove compartment, but that was easy enough. Thank you so much!!!

This video tremendously helped when performing the same work on my 2010 Civic! The one difference I noticed was mine seemed to only have one white peg; yet there were still two grooves. Not sure why... My advice: before you install the new part, make sure the vent control mode is on full "windshield" defrost". Then play with dependent control arm to ensure that the air is blowing fully from the defroster. After that, the new part should line up nicely. Thanks a bunch!

This is a great explanation. Thanks a lot for that. I just replaced it within 1.5hrs in my Civic 2010. Removing the back screw on the downward AC passer was little bit tricky as my ratchet didn't fit for the tiny space (refer to 3.44min). As a workaround, I used a flexible screwdriver and it did the job. It's not straight forward, you need to lean under the seat anyway. 7mm socket is what you need for everything else. Be patient and you will get it there.

Great vid. Was able to order the part and replace it exactly as instructed. I'm not sure if it's the same for 2007 models, but for my 2009 civic you don't need to actually remove the glove-box to replace the cabin air filter. Thanks again, probably saved me a fortune not having to go to the dealership.

Great job with your “how-to-do-it” post! I just want to add a bit more for future dudes who may have a need to reference your post? The HVAC system on 06 -'11 Civics are capable of self-diagnosis. Keep the Recirc & Rear Defog buttons depressed before turning the ignition On. If the system has a fault, the LED on the Front Defrost button will blink a DTC code that corresponds to the fault. A “1” or “2” means a problem in the air-mix control circuit, and the most obvious culprit on that circuit is the Air-Mix Control Motor/Module. Looks like the module comes out as an assembly so it’s possible to bench-replace the motor. That’s what I plan to do when the DORMAN 604-879 OE replacement motor I ordered arrives.

Don't buy the new motor yet!!!! I followed this video and it was great. Pulled the part out after verifying it wasn't moving. Once I got it out I decided to open it up and just take a look inside. I hadn't ordered the new part yet. Once you remove the three screws holding on the metal mount bracket, you have to gently lift the plastic clips holding it together. I broke half of them but it doesn't matter, the screws hold the part together. You also need to remove the white plastic disk by gently prying out the locking tab in the center of the disk and pulling the disk off the post. Inside is a motor, three gears and some electrical contacts. I removed the motor and just for kicks touched a 9 volt battery to it. It worked!!!!! I pulled off the big gear and attached to the bottom of the gear are electrical contacts. They tell the motor what position the controls are set to. They were dirty including the finger contacts that touch the gear. I cleaned them with alcohol and a q- tip.
@berticusmaximus8381
@berticusmaximus8381 8 лет назад
Then I regreased everything with white lithium grease. Put it back together (added a fourth screw to the empty hole since I broke the clips) and it works great. I made sure to grease the tracks on the disk as well. Try this before buying a new one!

Thanks for your comment Roderick. great tips on saving the old motor, sweet. For me though, if i'm going to go through the hassle of taking everything apart, I'm replacing the motor with a new one. especially since the replacement was only 35 bucks. regardless, more than one way to skin this particular cat, just depends on your preference.

+jcx2bby this is definitely something for someone who is comfortable with and proficient at these type of repairs. If not then you're right. $35 is not that much for a new one.

I took mine apart, and soldered two wires from the pic board, directly to the motor back itself. the metal plates they used had become distorted from 19 years of use. put it back together, now I cannot figure out what position I need to move the arm to install the assembly again. Dohhhh. lol

Tried tapping old motor, didn't work, so I went to buy new motor. The parts store I used sold the motor only, so you can take off the white plastic piece with a flathead screwdriver by gently disengaging the little tab that holds it to the hub and then remove the brace screws with a Phillips head. You put the brace on the new motor with same screw layout and the plug the plastic piece in the hub. I had the most trouble putting that assembly back on and getting the armature pegs back in the plastic piece grooves and then choosing top vent in order to remount the assembly. This video was crucial, many thanks.

Removing the bolts sucks unless you have tiny hands. Putting them back in is the easy part. Oh and that little bolt at the top of the foot vent? Do yourself a favor and don't put it back in. There's two other bolts holding it on, it weighs all of 12 ounces.

Maybe I should add that to erase any stored DTC code in HVAC memory, you first dial the Fan selector knob to Off and point the Temp selector knob to Max. Hold down the Recirc & Vent (top left) buttons and turn the ignition On. The Vent button LED should light for 2 secs and it's done.

Thanks for the video. I had the same issue with my 2004 Honda Accord LX. But my part was almost $90 online including s/h so I made sure the part was the problem before I bought another one. I unscrewed the part and left the cable in. I then pressed the controls and saw that it was moving. I came to realize the part was simply installed incorrectly and it took me several tries but I managed to hook the part correctly onto two tracks to the left of it. I think maybe it got off track when dealership dealt with passenger airbag recall, but I’m unsure. The mode motor assembly for a 2004 Accord is also located in same general area behind glove box; the p/n is 79140-SDA-A01 if anyone needs it.

My daughter’s 2010 Civic Hybrid with the automatic temperature control is the exact same type set up. Hers was stuck in the defrost position & I grabbed the white wheel while switching to the dash register and it started working again. But now I know exactly what to do when it finally quits. Buy a genuine Honda actuator as the Dorman ones are failure prone. You don’t want to have to do it twice!

Thank you very much for your video! This video was very helpful! I just finished replacing the air mode control motor! Now it's working properly and I believe a few hundreds dollars lol But it took 3 hours with hands from my gf. A couple of screws were really difficult to access with a 7mm socket. I got a relatively short arm of it but the space was so tight that I couldn't turn it well or the socket tended to be wobbling. As somebody commented, I should've got a flexible driver. Now I need to replace a light bulb for climate control panel another time. Please let me know if someone knows a part number or a helpful video as I've been searching it but haven't got a good video or figured a right bulb product number. Thank you again for this great video!

@@jcx2bby Thank you for your reply! By the way, I've just encountered a new issue. Somehow when I select the setting for air coming from only the feet/bottom space, air actually comes from not only the feet area but also slightly from the windshield area. When I placed the replacement part, I made sure that it was aligned with the two hooks. But it may be in a slightly incorrect spot. Would you happen to know how exactly I can ensure of the alignment? I'd like to try to fix it in a few days.

@@kenichisodeyama1855I'm not sure what your particular issue might be caused by...when I've had inconsistenties like this, sometimes I just take the part out completely and try again. Occasionally it is the fix.

@@jcx2bby I see. Thank you for your reply. I will try that. Which setting should i have on the climate control panel as a default/initial position when i place the the motor replacement? Doesn't it matter?
@jcx2bby
@jcx2bby 2 года назад
@@kenichisodeyama1855 it doesn't matter as far as I'm aware. Those 2 white pegs will move to line themselves up with the corresponding grooves in the cam piece on the motor. So it doesn't matter what mode you have set on the HVAC panel. At this point I'd guess that maybe one of your pegs came out, or broke, or you have a stuck vent door elsewhere in your HVAC vents.

Hello, can anybody tell me what is the yellow wire in this cabin and where it attached. My civic 2008 ac modes are not working and when i open the cabin, i found yellow wire is removed but i don't know where to fix it. Does it has any role in air directions??

Thanks so much for making this video! I feel confident to do this repair myself now. Do you happen to know if the location of this mode control motor is similar in other years and models? I have a 1997 Honda Accord. I thought I saw somewhere that it was located up above the gas pedal, but behind the glove box sure looks easier to get to.
@jcx2bby
@jcx2bby 7 лет назад
Hi there, I don't know if the location is the same on your Accord or not but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. There was a motor above the gas pedal on my Civic, but if memory serves, it was the temperature blend motor, not the air mode control motor. They looked exactly the same on my Civic....so much so that I removed the wrong motor before I realized what I'd done. Good luck!

I'm hearing a "clicking" noise on mine but it's above the gas pedal by my right knee. I located it and I can see it struggle back and forth. The temperature in the car has been out of whack despite what I set it too. I'm hoping I can do it myself but I'm not sure.

informative video, the cabin filter is changed when you service your car at the dealer, no reason why no one had ever changed it. a car should be serviced a few times in its life. unless you drive it until the timing belt breaks, then you will wish you had..... at least once or twice to protect your investment.

was the heat/air coming out and you just could not switch them to defrost, feet and front blower? If so which one was it stuck on? I have a 1998 Honda civic and the heat/air is coming out of the front but when I push defrost or feet is stays at front blower. and to line the pegs up to the groves did you have to turn that white disk thing when it was not plugged in and is that ok to do? Thanks, you guys that make videos like this are the best
@jcx2bby
@jcx2bby 7 лет назад
Yes, that was exactly the problem. The A/C would pump out tons of cold air...right at the windshield. You couldn't get the direction of air to change at all. I don't remember having any trouble lining up the pegs really. I think what I might have done was plug in the motor, turn the switch on the dash to whatever setting lined up close with the pegs and just manipulated things from there. I've sold this Civic, so I can't verify this, but it's what I seem to remember. glad you liked the video, and thank you for the kind words.
