Thanks for the reply! Got the issue fixed the shift shaft that the shift fork rides on was sticking,took the sub tranny cover off some penetrating oil and greased it up with white grease and worked it back and forth for a while and all is good
Good morning, I have a deep rancher of 2003 all the changes enter well, but when I take it in fourth and we carry the speed maintained at a certain speed or it reduces only to third or it makes a strike as if it were to jump. Can you tell me what's wrong with him? a greeting
Very nice and informative, thanks for your time putting this together. I purchased a used 2008 trx500 Foreman. Third gear doesn't function. The machine is a manual shift, it goes into and out of all gears (R, N, 1,2,4,&5) but third doesn't engage. It feels like the gears are possibly warn as you have shown on this video. I suspect a shifting fork, the gears are rounded off affiliated with third? I have a service manual and I'm wondering if you might have any quick diagnostic tips of something simple before one gets in deep. I noticed that the oil is low but looks OK (no metal flakes).
you are right in your diagnosis, unfortunately you are going to get knuckle deep into it. as for metal flakes maybe the past owner changed the oil so there would not be any flakes in it to sell it. but you are on the right track. good luck

first thing is to get a services manual. where the shift motor mounts to under that plate is some gears I would check there. maybe you stripped some teeth off one of the gears. the speed sensor should not let you shift when the rpms are up. the services manual will tell you how the test the shift motor and check the speed sensor. before you replaced anything hope this helps good luck
I have a 06 400 and I'm not having problems getting it in gear, but any little hill or hard throttle it grinds .sounds like it's coming from the same place. Think I'll check out the shift fork and forward and reverse gears. Thnx a lot ,Honda shop tried to tell me that there is nothing to replace and tried to sell me a new trans $1800 another $500 to put it into WTF! !!!!!!! Tnx again
Thanks Mark. I Isn't this designed to fail? When shifting their should be no chance of it grinding. If it does it mean one gear is stationary and the other is spinning. I am missing something. Where is the clutch that stops everything until the engine is revealed up and moves. The gears that have been grinding are a result of one gear spinning and one not
Quick question maybe you can help or point me in the right direction. 2006 Honda rincon 680. With bike running at idle in neutral , it will go into drive fine but will not go into reverse. Instead it makes a grinding noise and will not engage. Shut the bike down and put it in reverse and the start it up and it’s fine and will ride in reverse no issue. Help?
? Not saying that anybody would want to do this, but if they didn't use reverse that much. Can you reverse the reverse gear for the forward gear? For the forward gear
Im buying a 09 420es that is stuck in reverse... if I cant manually shift it or manage to get in to go back to other gears, what do I need to check? Just wiring, angle sensor and shift plate? what else could it be?
400EX99N..I have a 2004 400 AT. esp won't work only shows "---" on the gear indicator, but when I first turn on the key it will quick flash "R" then go back to "---"?? Auto worked all along but now it won't shift out of first gear, I've tried to retrieve a code but nothing happens.. Any suggestions as to what it may be and why the esp won't work?? Thanks
i have 2001 honda foreman 450s installed shifter plate now netural light only comes on in fifth gear and reverse light comes on in forth gear any suggestions would be great
Hi Mark. I"ve watched your 2007 Honda Rancher Shifting Problems video several times now. My 2007 Rancher won't shift out of first gear and the dealer where I brought it for repairs has given up trying to fix it. I was thinking about checking the transmission myself but my husband and son think I'm nuts and just want to trash it or sell it for parts. Do you have a shop?

that rancher reset it self. you also can disconnect the battery for about 30min and it should reset but check you owners manual, as long as you fixed the problem

I have a Honda rancher 420 es its having shifting problems..one day I was riding and I gave it a little gas and shift something pop after that it wouldn't let me shift up just down now nothing but it let me shift manual shift fine but when I take the shift motor off it shift 5 times and stop till I trun it off then back on 5 times again..i need help...I change the shift motor samething

Perhaps you can answer a question I have a 2012 Honda rancher 420 ES I put a snorkel on it and now it is hard to start and if I get in deep water that covers the exhaust it cuts off could you possibly tell me what is going on

I have a 2011 foreman 500 es, everything works perfectly good . It just seems to jump a bit when going into forward or reverse, is that normal or should I turn down the idle. It never grinds just jumps a little . Thanks
I have a 06 honda rancher 400at auto and es 4x4 and 4x2. I replaced the angel sensor 3 times so i know it's not it . And I fixed the d n r sensor connectors too.. but when I put it in auto or reverse either way it flashes 5 time and resets when I turn key off... so is that the ecm or is it a internal issue. When it's in es mode and in d it shifts and drives fine... when you reset the bike and don't turn key off it will go in reverse and drive without popping and bearing moving like it does when the esp is flashing... pls help.lol
Did you figure it out? I have the same problem. Flashing code 5. I changed the angel sensor and clocked it properly but still getting code 5. I tried the reset procedure but not hearing shift motor calibrate. Any ideas?
I went to change the shift motor and it was seized up. Put my spare on and now I got code 5 to dissappear. Process of elimination I guess. Bought an angle sensor for nothing lol

I have a Honda rancher 350 all wheel drive. when i put it in reverse the light says it is reverse but it goes forward.. when i put it in first or 2 3 4 5 it will go backwards .so everything is working but it goes wrong way... thanks..
+Michael Dickens Is it a foot shift or a push button shift? it sounds like the tranny is out of sink or something like that or if its electric shift it may be electrical. was this motor taken apart?
it's a 5 up in forward 1 down for reverse foot shift with the push button and left hand brake tipe. lol.I got to laffing at it because this thing has me Ready to blow. trying to figure it out..but anyways some how I have 1 down forward and 5 up reverses .other than forward and backwards has flip flopping on me.nothing else is wrong it shifts good reverses Lite and neutral Lite works.no there has been no one inside it since I got it. I don't think anyone been in it or it look it anyways. I was riding it then I parked it for few months then I pulled the motor and wire harness and put it on another frame and when I started it Up it's doing this. lol.

count the blinks (is a code) its a 2 part code the first set are long blinks and the next number are quick blinks.a example 2 long blinks and 4 quick brinks is a code 24. let me know what they are and I can give you the what it means

400EX99N ok kool.. just put in a new angle sensor and clean shift motor and still having problems. I might buy a new shift motor and see what happens. But my big concern is why is the emergency shift stuck really hard to turn wont turn up nor down?!! Thanks in advance!
My 2007 Honda ES 420 has electric shift problems. Works fine in cool temp for about 20 minutes then nothing. Will shift through all gears with manual shifting tool. The blinks on dash is 2 longs, 4 shorts if anyone has an idea, would appreciate comment.
the code 24 is a shift control motor drive circuit problemI would check the circuit and wiring going to the shifter motor or it may be the shifter motor
ive got a foreman 400 that wont shift below 2nd gear.. shifts from 2nd to 5th just fine but wont go in 1st, N, or R. possible that its the shift fork?? how do I remove them?
Lee Mitchell sounds like a shift fork or stripped gear. to change them you have to take the motor apart, you have to split the cases. your first step is to get a repair manual for your quad a see how big of a job it is.
