In great detail, we will cover the disassembly of the input drum, clean it up, and then reassemble it with new parts. Of course, this is the continuing series of videos covering the transmission rebuild of the 4L60E out of a 2007 Chevy Silverado. This is a tricky process and there are a lot of considerations to make when setting up the clutch packs within the input drum. We will cover some of those details and hopefully discussion will happen in the comments section as well since there are far too many setup options, opinions, and aftermarket parts to cover in one video!
Dates of filming: June 21st, 2018 (Input drum rebuild)
June 26th, 2018 (Stator bushing replacement, final air test)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):

6:05 Hit My Soul - Silent Partner
11:33 Parasail - Silent Partner
16:43 Succotash - Silent Partner

Here is a list of resources that can help when rebuilding one of these transmissions (none of these are sponsors, just handy resources!):
Rebuild manual I used to follow-along with (though I wouldn't rely on it 100%):
GM 4L60/4L60E Rebuild Procedures by Cliff McCormick
Many special tips and tricks, as well as tools for this rebuild:
www.misterpeach...
Exploded view diagrams for MANY different transmissions:
www.world-wide-...
Some pretty specific information (though some is biased) and a good chart to diagnose transmission issues):
www.drivetrain....
And here are Wholesale GM Parts Online links to several pages for this specific 2007 model transmission. This website has saved me several times and is the single best free resource I know for hi-res diagrams specific to your vehicle and cooresponding part numbers and information.

Yep, exactly correct! Other than the usual wear from miles and slightly burned fluid, there wasn't really anything wrong with the transmission. I already had the parts and figured that I might as well refresh it and do a video series to cover it while it was out of the truck.

@williamweesner1191
@williamweesner1191 Год назад
You removed the 3/4 clutch pack snap ring from the wrong end. The scarf cut is to facilitate installation, flat and goes in first and out first, the scarf cut overlap so it doesn’t collide with the square cut end. The “Boost” as Springs you say are load release springs they prevent the inadvertent application of the 3/4 clutch pack during very high RPMs
@williamweesner1191
@williamweesner1191 Год назад
Installing that snap ring on the overrun clutch piston (s) retainer by pushing it down will scratch the input housing by pushing and scraping with the snap ring, The gouge you leave in the Forward clutch housing causes a stress concentration, especially high horsepower applications and can cause it to crack resulting in no motion, additionally, yes, the Spragg does hold one way in free turn the other but you need to make sure that you tell them which way it free turns and which way it holds. And all that transmission fluid is completely not necessary. That is more an opportunity for dust and dirt contamination which a 4L60E is very sensitive to. If you learned all this on your own, congratulations, if somebody taught you this, they taught you some mistakes. Additionally, when you were installing your 3/4 clutchs, you put the wide tabs in the widest slot, (which mean your load release springs can’t now go in there) they’re supposed to go to the Narrow slots for more surface area contact. In Essence you have overstressed your three Four drum. Also, you should mesasure your clutch Pat clearance with thea Spragg out of the unit and the clutch plates dry dry.. you over drove the bush or deformed the driven end by using a socket and not a bushing driver.and that’s the only reason it hangs up, I did it several times in the beginning as well. All that being said, your video is great, I love the presentation and the music, not the overwhelming guitar riff that most everybody else plays
@MojoWitwicky

Blow shop air into the nearest hole to the drum to remove all the pistons at once.

You can also assemble the entire forward piston assembly on the bench and install it into the drum as one unit
@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
I don't know why, but I haven't had luck with that method! Ends up being too fiddly so I just install things one at a time. Probably just me though. And good point about using air to remove parts faster!

May seem trivial but did you ever figure out why that bearing was too small?
@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 4 года назад
Nope! I can only assume it was some sort of manufacturing flaw. I have never seen one, but it's possible there exists a slightly undersized bearing that would fit better with worn parts. Most likely just some sort of QC error though.

I have seen the older model bushings, and they are visibly thicker than the newer ones. It looked up the dimensions for those bushings (Sonnax 35007A (1984+ thin wall) and 35007B (1982-84 thick wall) and the thin ID is 1.004", thick ID is 0.908". That is a much larger difference than the bushings I installed here, they were identical to the naked eye, probably only different by 0.005" or so. Looking at the numbers, I wonder if the small one had an ID of exactly 1.000" for whatever reason. Would be different enough it wouldn't fit.

great videos. would you have any idea why my 98 4L60E seems to bind for a quick second after I approach a stop and it downshifts from 2nd to 1st? Say I'm cruising and I approach a stop and I get the 2-1 downshift I feel a bit of a clunk, then if I go after a second or two, the truck will feel heavy as if I'm pulling a load, it'll feel that way for about one or two seconds, then the "bind" will release and the truck will feel lighter and drive normal. if at the stop or light I wait long enough (a minute or so), at some point there I will feel a tiny bit of a kick and then when I take off I will not feel that bind or heavy load; the small kick seems to be when that something that binds or sticks gets released. I imagine like the 2/4 band getting stuck for a reason or something, and when I wait for long enough or as I give it gas, it will come unstuck.

@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
I admit, I'm not entirely sure on that one. Just as some people don't think soaking the frictions is necessary, I have heard that brought up before but reached no conclusion on it either way. If there is some swelling that occurs, I wouldn't think the clearance would change more than a few thousandths at most and unless it is some sort of super-precise performance application I doubt it would be worth worrying about.

Automatic transmissions are pretty complex because they are doing a lot of different things, and have to account for many different shifting demands and scenarios. They have all the mechanical parts like clutches and gears which have to interact with the hydraulic system, as well. An older unit with only two or three gears would be more simple, but more modern ones with 5+ gears can make a 4L60E look like a child's toy. The engineering that goes into them is absolutely amazing stuff.

You've got it! Rebuild the transmission and film it. Throw all video files into editor. Rough cut all usable footage. Skim though it, recording voiceover for what is happening and adding things that come to mind. Cut voiceover track down in editor. Go through and match video up to the voiceover track, maybe adding extra lines here and there. Then a final run through to clean things up, add music, and add extra subtitles in addition to ones I put in during other steps as things came to mind.

An inspection was not completed or mentioned for the folks trying to learn, the book does not cover all important items to inspect and why. The 3-4 boost springs need to be tall and not smashed down, this was not mentioned or no real attention was paid to this common problem but you did not remove them as some guys do. Forcing a feeler gauge is not proper, it should slip in with minimal pressure. I did like some of your procedures to protect the Teflon seals. I liked the added clutch also. A wider bushing is a better way to go.
