That's a good tip about how to simulate a lean condition by pumping the vacuum assist brake pedal. I didn't realize that it used so much vacuum to cause a noticeable vacuum leak. I've always memorized the phrase "rich at rest, lean under load" to trigger a mental light bulb to look at the MAF. The best explanation I could muster was that a dirty MAF doesn't react as much to big air flow, so the slope of trim adjustment for increasing rpm is flattened. Then in turn the computer notices it is lean under load so it adjusts the baseline fuel trim upward, which in turn is too much fuel when rpm falls back to idle. As you clearly show, all of these findings could also be due to inadequate fuel delivery so one has to think about both when walking down this pathway. The unequivocal finding is the fuel pressure reading. So I guess the moral of the story is to look for both when one considers either. Outstanding demo.

The pump fixed it. It's very hard for me to get a video of the fix as I'm mobile and that means I have to go back to the shop after the repair.

hi, is there a way to figure out about bad fuel pump based on fuel trim. means i am not sure what will be STFT for bad fuel pump and have you ever used it or is it valuable. 2. on 2.5l engine, we expect to see 2.5gm/s on idle, so what number like 2.3 or 2.7 will trigger to believe you it dirty maf sensor. much apprecaite your help.

A bad fuel pump will show positive fuel trims and it won't come down when you rev the engine, many times it will get worse under load. The MAF sensor I suspected was dirty because it didn't rise that high on a snap throttle.

Need help, i have a 2010 Lexus is250, my long term fuel trims are negative 14 and negative 18 and i believe i have a crappy aftermarke maf over reporting

The rule of thumb I was taught is at idle the g/s should be equal to the displacement of the engine. That Lexus has a 2.5L engine so I would expect to see 2.5 g/s at regular idle. If I would see more I would follow up with a volumetric efficiency test. Hope you figure it out.

@@advancedleveldiagnostics it's reading 5.43 GS at idle fully operating temperature. My 2002 Lexus IS300 reads very close but that car is using a OEM MAF.
