In their infinite wisdom, the FIG's new Code of Points had made their sport borderline unwatchable. Any iota of originality that had been left under 10.0 vanished entirely. Now nearly every gymnast did the same copy/paste routines. When we said we wanted compulsories back, this is not what we meant.
Of course I don't blame the gymnasts or coaches. Why go out of your way to do something unique and original if you're not rewarded for it? You have to play the game. My vitriol is directed straight at the WTC.
The 2006 Code in particular was especially uninspiring. With gymnasts counting 10 elements, it left little time for choreography or artistic expression. In many ways, the more robotic the better.
It's easy to see why Shawn Johnson 🇺🇸 excelled under this system. She could chuck skills til the cows came home. And she was bubbly, likeable, and marketable. A win win for everyone. Except for fans of switch leaps. Or ring leaps. Or anything involving flexibility. You get the point.
In some ways, she was the American version of Ferrari 🇮🇹. Like Vanessa, she was 15 and in her debut Worlds. Unlike Vanessa, she was able to make it through four routines in the all-around without a fall--a first for a World Champion under the new system. So kudos for that, I guess.
