This shows how I had to cut the 1/8" steel shroud over the steering column bearing for replacement using a combination of sawzall and mostly a dremel. This generation apparently had a redesign of the bottom of steering column. The shaft out of column is much longer and has a steel shroud along with a wire coil retaining the shift lever cable. The steel shroud covers it preventing bearing removal. Diagrams don't indicate any of it.
I removed the gas pedal and bracket it was mounted to.
For reinstalling the bearing make there's a bit of spraylube on shaft and bearing outside to aid in installation. I found a piece of 1" pvc pipe about 16" long inserted from the engine compartment through firewall hole for intermediate shaft and slid over shaft. Just drive bearing up into place making sure you have it clocked in the right position so it goes where it needs to. Otherwise the locking tabs prevent it from being just slid into place from underneath the dash.

Thanks for the video!!! I've been looking all over to figure out how to do this since it is different than the old trucks. I thought cutting the shroud would be the hard part but I've found installing the new bearing to be the toughest. That thing has been kicking my butt for hours. I didn't read your comments about using the PVC through the firewall until just now, I'll be doing that tomorrow. I've got the bearing now where it only needs to go in about another 1/8' so the tabs will lock. I can already tell that the new bearing has taken the slop out of the upper shaft so this was definitely worth the time. Thanks again for sharing!

You're very welcome! I looked for a long time to and found nothing. Glad I could help you in the right direction. I should add the pvc pipe info in a pinned comment. Definitely makes it quick and easy. Make sure to secure the cable again to. I drilled a hole in the bracket above and put a ziptie to keep it from sropping on the shaft.

OK updated info. I'm working on a 2010 now. The bearing has a sensor built in that blank rectangular section of bearing. Found another vid that said cut the larger flange area off bearing. So leave the cylinder section and it will slide out/in...OK that will work for some nice idea. But with the sensor portion that won't work. I'm doing the steering column on the 2010 and the Torx screws are on TOP of the column right where the lower shackle secures the column up with the 15mm nuts. Yes the top of the screws are on top of there threads down and head up. So getting to them...umm how All Data??? So I'm choppin it off the same way basically but easier since the whole column is out. Kyle Simmons below in the comments trimmed down a sawzall blade to fit in the hole on top of the shroud and allows you to cut down both sides...Good job Kyle!!! That's faster and easier than a dremel...but I got you beat, I'll have this one off in less than a minute haha. Helps to have the column out :) Maybe one could loosen the top 2 15mm nuts and remove the bottom 2 and drop the rear of the column down to get at the Torx screws on top...but in this case now. I'm cutting it off. Just be sure to secure the cable so it can't get caught in the steering since you're cutting the curly wire part off.

I just got done doing this. I have a 2013 1500 Silverado LTZ with the power pedals. I unbolted the gas pedal's couple 30 torx screws then could get to the power portions 3 10mm bolts. I did not unhook the power portion and just laid it aside. I left the brake in also. Mine had a hole dead center of the shroud right behind the back of the plastic bearing. I cut a hacksaw blade down some and put it into my Chief airsaw from Harbor Freight that I bought just for this job. I got the blade into that hole to cut down both sides. Hope that helps someone!

Excellent idea...you get honorable mention in the pinned comment. Someone else suggested cutting the larger flange part off the bearing...that seems like it will work on some of these earlier ones. On a 2010 I'm working on there's a sensor in there. Back to cutting it. But the column is out...so eezy peezy

That plate is supposed to be held down with three bolts from the top at least that's what all data says, my plan tomorrow was to lower the steering column as much as I can to reach to those three bolts and remove the plate that obstructs the bearing to come out.

Seems like that would require complete removal of the column...way more than I wanted to do

Has this fix lasted, curious since were replacing it with the exact same part.

I don't believe it was actually bad...just changed it as it's a cheap part and normally easy.

How did you get to the top of the metal bracket to cut it off? Not much room to do anything on the top?

Dremel and if you get most of the way through it. It may bend and snap off. It's not easy or fun, i couldn't see any alternatives. I think started on one side and carefully slowly work up and over as straight as possible

Apparently AllData says there's 3 bolts that secure that plate bracket to column...didn't seem reachable or possible without removing column.

Also you removed the accelerator, not the brake pedal
