As others have mentioned, it's completely unnecessary to separate the ball joint or any other suspension component. After the brake components are removed, remove the axle nut, use a hammer and punch to push the axle shaft in, use the 17mm wrench to loosen the hub bearing bolts, pull out the hub bearing 1/2 way out. You can then remove the hub bearing bolts the rest of the way, then finish removing the hub bearing. Install reverse of removal. Easy peezy.

On mine the hub was rusted/stuck in the knuckle. I beat the hell out of it with a sledge hammer for hours and all it did was destroy the old hub. I pulled the knuckle out, put it in a vice, put the hub bearing bolts about halfway in and hit those with a smaller hammer. That is what finally got the hub separated from the knuckle on mine. Mine is now 13 years old with 240,000 miles though. A newer/fresher car would likely be easier.

Did everything by the book and still managed to mess up a brand new bearing by not properly torquing the axle nut down.

I didn't have to remove the ball joint or suspension bolts when I did my hub. I also used loctite on the hub bolts, you don't want those coming loose. Notice how the hub bolts had a pink colored thread lock on them from the factory?

Awesome vid:) its so hard to find the 13-18 rav 4 repair vids. Bolts to remove the rotor are 8mm 1.25 Torque wheel bearing bolts 17mm up to 71ft-lbs Torque wheel nut to 159 ft-lbs Torque caliper 14mm bolts to 25 ft lbs Torque brake shoe 17mm bolts to 72ft-lbs Oooh, IMPORTANT.....replace axle nut everytime!!! My axle nut had to be moved with a breaker bar to the end. Partially stripped from the start. Overtorqued maybe, or to much reefing with a breaker bar. So next time, it's a new CV assembly, cause no way will the axle survive another nut removal. My bearings were almost fused on. Took alot of force to remove. Used a slide hammer, along with a sledge. I hope i didnt damage anything else. I do recommend the application of grease.

don't know why you took the ball joint and strut off. You can push the axle in with a puller. You got the bearing to move with the mallet, that can be the hardest part. A few pulls with a slide hammer and you'd of had the bearing off. Still and all it was pretty fast and good workmanship.

Good video. The only thing I did different was I used a larger gear puller to push the shaft back through the hub so I didn't have to unbolt everything else.

Easy job. If you have an older model 1999 to 2004 I think, the bearing is not an assembly. The bearing is a pressed bearing and you need a bearing press kit if you do this at home. I did my 04 RAV4's right front bearing and its the pressed in kind. Years of corrosion and road grime builds up and they are difficult to get out even with the manual press. You can still do it with a bit of muscle, some patience. I hate pressed bearings with a passion.

Why did you pull the suspension stuff? This is why I don't trust mechanics cuz that probably took an extra 70$ worth of time and it probably needs an alignment now

I suspect it had hit a curb pretty hard. It had a new wheel in the same spot. Usually they last around 130,000 miles.

All you need to do to remove the caliper is to unbolt it from the knuckle, by the 2, 17mm bolts and sling it up, If you don't have a slide hammer, After removing the axle nut, the secret is to use the 4, 17mm bolts, that hold the bearing assemble, to push the bearing out of the knuckle. By unbolting them 4 turns or so at a time, you carefully hit the bolts, in the center, with a flat round punch, one at a time, on opposite sides. Unless it's really rusted in there it should come right out, in less time and hassle.

There is mo way you can do that with the 'no room' scenario. Look at TM 4:53 on the lower back bolt only way you can do what you're saying to do is to dream about it!

@@Long-Island-SoundI basically did this, but I had to remove the steering knuckle from the car. Maybe with an actual lift it would be possible, but on jack stands I didn't have enough room.
