And without Dave clark you'd never of heard of him as it was Dave band, Dave bought the instruments and amps and found gigs that eventually led to them leaving their day jobs and turning pro. So having a great band, a dedicated manager who also happens to be in the band, and great songs and arrangements are the reason why.
@@mikekelly9851 To a certain extent, but I've seen tons of Stones videos where they are playing live, and absolutely none where these guys are. Dave could barely play drums, he was a business man, not a musician. It just tarnished things, never seeing them try to cut it live, disappointing.
To me the 1960s especially growing up with the Dave Clark Five. To me Mike Smith had one of the greatest voices of Rock and roll and also the talent behind the Vox Continental played by Mike Smith really gave them a unique sound. We also greatly Miss Dennis Payton on saxophone great bass playing by Rick Huxley Dave Clark on drums I'm really glad I was around to be a part of that the music will never die
I really enjoyed The Beatles on its Sullivan in 64. But when I heard the Dave Clark 5, they were my go to band. But for the longest time.The 60s were a great time for rock and roll music and soul music.

He practically never played drums on any of their recordings. He also made sure he got a songwriting credit on every song and he didn't write any of them.
@michpackfan obviously, you don't know the real story. Dave never wrote anything for the DC5. He got "credit" for almost everything. Ron Ryan was the official ghostwriter of many hits, such as Because and Anyway You Want It. Aside from that, Mike Smith wrote most of the songs. Bobby Graham was the main drummer. Dave was the business man who put the band on a salary. I've had many talks with Ron about this. He has been in the comments in many DC5 uploads discussing the whole thing.
I can also say with all honesty, "I would not have missed the '60s for the world." I do remember the sixties and very well. I was a teenager then, growing up fast, and delighted to be part of the British Invasion. Those tunes in part influenced my life and helped shape me into who I am today. The music defined an entire era. Not much has changed, has it.
One of my favorite bands EVER! Incredible music and lyrics, so glad they were inducted in to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, what a great and heartfelt induction!
As much as I love/loved The Beatles, I was probably the only musician in my 1960's musical buddies and bands to really love the DC5. As a drummer, I knew we could sing, too. And Dave proved it in some songs. I bought their records, too. Hanks said it all as that was me!!
Of course, that was the most wonderful thing about the British Invasion of the 60s that I lived through. The bands were unique to themselves, and not Beatles clones. Animals, The Who, just to name 2 were all very different. I also bought the latest DC5 records and loved their music. The saxophone really set them apart from the others.
Somewhere in LA when Alex and Eddie Van Halen still played sax and piano they saw DC5 and knew what to do. (only changed instruments when they heard Cream 2 years later!)
The Dave Clark 5 was a phenomenal rock band but Mike Smith's lead vocal was right up there with Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, Elvis, Lennon, McCartney, John Fogerty, Dylan, Robert Plant & anyone else you can think of. He was fantastic. The band managed to be a pop-rock band with a sax & dynamic percussion that was heavy, aggressive & soulful. Don't underestimate this band. Even the b-sides were fiery -- "I Know You," "No Time To Lose," "Try Too Hard," and so many more. I'll never forget them. Dave Clark wrote a successful Broadway musical too & he was the smartest rock businessman in rock. He owned & controlled his masters & publishing from the beginning. Dave Clark's speech on this night was one of the best I ever heard. Eloquent & poignant. It's amazing how that R&R Hall of Fame audience doesn't know when to applaud.
DC5 was NOT a phenomenal rock band. They never played live anywhere because they could not. Just a group of hacks who had the good luck of being British at the time of the British Invasion.

Has there ever been such a heartfelt and humble acceptance speech compared to this one by Dave Clark. I loved the DC5 as a teenager, along with the music of so many other bands. It was the music I love, of course. After listening to Hanks's superb introduction and their acceptance speeches, I now love them as people too. I'm kind of overwhelmed at this moment.
Being a big fan of the Beatles,when I heard The Dave Clark Five I thought they were the answer to my prayers in music, they were "it". Greater than those of Liverpool. I stil think that way.

I have always wondered why Lenny (never played a solo) Davidson was billed as lead guitar. Richie Blackmore had an ego as big as the great outdoors and he never felt the need to call himself that while in Deep Purple.
@@jerrybrownell3633 If he was that accomplished then why did he leave the music business after Dave Clark laid him off? Why didn't other bands ask him to join? Emerson, Lake & Palmer were looking for a guitarist for a time until they decided to be a trio. Why didn't he do any session work? There remain many unanswered questions about the DC5 and what kind of contracts Clark got the other guys to sign.
@@Mister_Pedantic - What are you talking about? Clark didn't lay anybody off. Well I guess he kinda did. The group disbanded in 1970 so he laid everybody off. Clark was an astute business man and he owned the rights to all of their music and royalties. He invested the money and all 5 members ended up pretty well off. A couple of years later Clark and Smith tried to start another band but it didn't last as they couldn't match the success of The DC5. Dave and Lenny are the only 2 survivers..
@@jerrybrownell3633 The other members of Dave Clark's group were his contract employees and he paid them a salary. They weren't well off. When he died Mike Smith's estate was valued at 66K British pounds. Over the years they asked Clark to go on the oldies tours and he refused. He also refused to allow them to play the songs in public. They needed money and he refused. I think it's safe to assume that the contracts the members signed included non-disclosure clauses. Why else did none of them ever speak out or write a tell-all book with the answers to the questions everyone asks?
I hate the Beatles but if these guys actually had any swagger they would have actually played live instead of making a career by lip syncing. What a joke.
I remember listening to them on my transistor radio and debating with high school classmates which band was best; the Beatles, the Rolling stones, Herman's Hermits, or the DC Five. It would still be a difficult choice, and certainly debatable. One thing is certainly true; the sixties still rock!
Last time I heard this music I was about 9 years old, almost 60 years ago. Still has the same punch that it did back then. DC% had 7 years in the spotlight, then called it quits. And Clark, who had control of everything, held the music out of reach for more than 20 years. With public accessibility to the material, the group would have been a household word for decades.
He really should have made boxed sets of all the albums during the '60s nostalgic phase of the '90s. Now, they're all streaming online for barely any pay, I imagine.
@@SylentEcho Absolutely. Maybe one of the rare mistakes he made, because, as an entrepreneur, he played most of the right cards. To him, DC5 was a project that succeeded wildly. Mind you, by the 90's, I don't think he needed the money.
@Sylent Echo Dave hung up his drumsticks in the 70’s after he broke his wrists in a tobogganing accident and never looked back.He stayed behind the scenes in the music industry. There’s an interview where he said he was approached in the 1980’s to do a reunion tour for a lot of money but declined. I’m not so sure the rest of the band knew about it.
@@fangirllinda Well, as you might know, the DC5 wasn't like most bands. It was Dave and 4 hired guns. Not going ahead with a reunion was totally up to him, but I think it might have been the right move. Why tarnish a reputation with a show that might go sour if the guys hadn't kept up their talents? We're seeing groups like The Who (one deaf guy and one guy who can't sing anymore) and others who are shadows of their former selves.

The one word I would use to describe mid sixties rock n roll would be JOYOUS. It made you happy and want to sing along and tap your foot. I spent a lot of time singing along to those records when I was young.
Hall of Fame trophies should be FIVE, dead or alive, they are all integral part of the band & part of our music lives. Their families would be proud to have that commemorative trophy at home, for life.

Awww how sad Mike passed just before the induction. He made the DC5 what it was with his incredible vocals. To me they were just as great as the Beatles. Maybe more so in their time of the mid 60’s. Favs At the Scene, I Like It Like That, Catch Us if You Can. The music lives on! Great renditions by the rock stars! 🌟
Ah yes, that was the year I was wearing a Dr. Kildare shirt, white pants and a black sorts coat. I preferred the DC5 to The Beatles until they faded away.
My memory and experience of listening to the DC5 was unmitigated happiness. Every radio airplay was always turning up the volume knob on either the kitchen radio or Dad's Chevy Bel Air much to my parents annoyance. The DC5 were an intrinsic aspect of the British Invasion thanks to The Beatles. And radio in 1964 was inundated by The Beatles, The DC5, The Animals, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, and on and on and on. Tom Hanks gives the BEST R&R HOF induction speech ever! PERIOD! THE DC5 will live forever because their music is pure happiness and joy.
We all thought in the 60's it should have been the the Mike Smith 5.. I remember as a little kid it was The Beatles Vs the DC5 at times but as we all know the Beatles always developed and never looked back.
Born in 58 Rock and Roll and my sisters transistor radio was my first full memory. Tons of one hit wonders. Great. But the DC5 not the Beatles or the Stones were my favorite. Odd, because their music was more relationship based. They had a lot of fun stuff but they got deep too. And the SAX! That worked for that time. It was really moving. And I did see Catch us if You Can at the theater. But that was it. They really were great and of their time.

How lucky we were, we who were given the gifts of Ed Sullivan, Tom Hanks, The Dave Clark Five, and countless other blessings of the time. Was life perfect? Far from it but, damn, in that imperfection there was so much to be thankful for and even euphoria.
In my humble opinion, this is THE best rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame induction ever. Tom Hanks is not only one of the best actors of our time, but this was hands-down his best performance ever. Do you want to know why? Because it all came from the heart. I did not grow up IN the 60s but I grew up ON the 60s. Did you notice that no F bombs were required to convey the passion for the music or comment on how great the band was? No sloppy, Kid Rock foul mouthed tribute during his Cheap Trick induction? No despising the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame by Steve Miller did.? Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of problems with the selection process of the inductees Into the “rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame” I just think it should be left for another time. Celebrate the greatness that we have been recognized by the hall.. and for crying out loud… Stop in inducting! Most of the greats have already been placed there.
