The transmission in auto mode is indeed really deficient. Flooring it unfortunately overwhelms it and makes it worse. Fortunately, if you use the paddle shifters and shift it at reasonable points (letting up on the gas so it can clutch) it's fairly drivable. It takes a couple of hours to get the feel of it.
I have one. It drives easy, great city or highway. Zips along like nobody's business acceleration is good comfort is good layout is fine. and the convertable top is great for summer months.
@@bmarie8965 sure why not just give it a good examination make sure the oil is clean take it for a test drive if you buy it make sure you learn to operate the shifter paddles on the steering wheel.
I don't know how you were struggling to get above 60mph. I borrowed one of these to travel 140 miles, most of which was on motorways, and it easily sat at 70. The only downside was you could really feel crosswinds on the steering, which was unsettling. Still, I thought it was fine as a runabout. Like a go kart. Better than the fiat 595 I was leasing.
The response on the acceleration is easily fix with a throttle controller and believe me. You'll really know what 70 hp can really do in this little car🚗
@@alm7707 there are many different types but the one i am using i bought it from eBay. Im sure there might be a better device out there but i am very happy with the one i use .
I just picked one up for my production business. I daily drive a BMW F30 and for work this one is perfect. It carries all my filming gear in the back. So cool.
@@TheSpeedyGuidy yeah I’m getting my company’s decal all around it too. Since this car grabs so much attention on the road. It’s be great, free marketing.
There is one aspect that you have been unable to quantify. We owners LOVE our cars. I have some quite exotic cars in my driveway sometimes, but I mostly choose smartie.
Ok guy i have to say i bought a used one 2013 for 5,989 12,000 miles had it a year and love😍it.Sorry i would not trade it for anything gets me where i want to go.Did my own oil change from youtube videos or course.😊I want another one now.🤔😆You look good in it.My car goes 75 on the freeway easy and it's not at all scary.Go in with a open your mind as the slogan goes.
My comfort zone is the E-Class estate and most of my 30+ cars were Mercedes, the rest being mainly German premium or the occasional VW Golf, Subarus, Alfas. I think the Smart makes a lot of sense and it is a car that excels in what it does. As the smallest car in production, it feels like a much bigger car in terms of specs, comforts driving pleasure and refinement. Bizarrely, some people driving hideously bad cars mock me for having it, but why would I trust anyone’s opinion who bought rubbish on finance?!
Ive owned 2 of them both were cabrios! Absolutely Loved Them and very reliable cars!!! The paddle shifters are Awesome! This guy is annoying though with his stupid remarks
Was looking to get one of these to mess around with and use as a city car instead of using my A4 or ML350. Was it really that bad to get up to speen on the highway?
It's pretty abysmal when it comes to acceleration but honestly, this car is the optimal city car and that will outshine any shortcoming on freeway onramps.
If you use the paddles/manual mode you can stay in each gear longer to get up to speed or press harder on the gas to activate a button for better acceleration.
You know what they say... It takes a real man to drive and to be seen in one... Kinda like a pink cabriolet. They have a stereotype attached. Gotta be confident in yourself. Living in a bigger European city, I've always thought smaller is better... And it doesn't get much better than the Fortwo. Practical and fun as hell to drive.
@@TheSpeedyGuidy I'm really not sure, I've never driven any other smart car. What I did notice is that for some reason your model didn't have an rpm meter or fog lights? I do find myself going in manual often, especially going uphill. Also It has 2 exhaust pipes that look pretty cool but get dirty very often when I stomp on the gas. Mine's a 2009 so its not that new or anything, but I can definitely tell you it's faster than my parents' buick.
I overreacted a bit... the thing is totally fine 65-75 mph. Takes a while to accelerate but a perfect city car nonetheless. Highly recommend for tight cities.
The saddest thing of all in this "modern" society is that in none of the new vehicle models that are manufactured (especially those that are so practical, small and cheap) the automotive engineers and manufacturers at the time of projecting them; they do not take into account the concept of "universal design" or design for all people (which consists of conceiving and projecting from the origin, environments, processes, goods, products, services, objects, instruments..., in such a way that they can be used by all people, to the greatest extent possible). And I reflect on this because in the design of these small vehicles, the engineers have not thought in the slightest about enabling access and driving for people who use wheelchairs, despite being a considerable number of citizens worldwide, who by our own limitation and our difficulties in accessing public transport, we have a greater need for a vehicle to get around than those who walk without any difficulty.
I don't know what is wrong with your motor if you cant run over 50 mph . My vehicle has good zip on the take off and will cruise on the freeway at 65 mph easily. By the time the transmission goes thru its cycle 5 times it is flying.
I’m on my second smart car and I do own a full-size car as well and 63 240 pounds muscular build and I fit just fine in that smart car and I love it it’s so easy to work on mechanic of 23 years
This review slaps harder than my dad. All these people in the comments have no brain... they clicked on a review of a smart car expecting loads of praise 😂 Guidy is the best car reviewer hands in pasta 🍝
Even tho he review a Passion version with no turbo the funny thing is not 2008 or owner modded fenders and drl's from 2013 version also no Rev counter and navi. I don't blame him but even he says "I tent ro read about it, watch videos..." At least is not the MDH, Well most of american videos about Smarts are the heavy modded ones. I still waiting for a Review of the Brabus version at least the Passion Turbo. And no one understand how the transmission works on those things, americans have that horrible version with fake Parking worth pointing some differences of European one to American.
A guy at work has one of these and lives close to the shop. He says he spends 20$ - 30$ every 2 months on gas. Hes able to fit his toolbox in the back. It seems like a good investment. Hes a very short guy though, id look like a clown hopping out of a little clown car.
whats wrong with yall? The transmission is in fact garbage, driving this in highways is a challenge.. he doesnt bash the car, he is talking facts. still doesnt change the fact im getting one of these soon enough!
I'm 3 minutes in and I'm pissed off. I have an '08. It's not a perfect car, or a perfect smart car, but that doesn't mean it's not a GREAT car. Never say anything negative about my Baby and her relatives. And BTW, I hate that they moved the ignition from between the seats.
