This is the 2009 Supercross season finale from Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.
In 2009, San Manuel Yamaha's James Stewart #7 came into the final round in Vegas with a scant 6-point lead over Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Chad Reed #1, the defending Supercross champ from 2008. James had came from a bad beginning to the Supercross season with a DNF and a 19th at Anaheim 1 to get to where he was at this time.
The series began in January at Anaheim 1. The big changes to note were that James Stewart had left his long-time home of Kawasaki for San Manuel Yamaha after a perfect 2008 Motocross season. Chad Reed, who was on San Manuel Yamaha for the past two years, left his long-time home of Yamaha for the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team after winning the 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. James Stewart romped his way to the 2007 title with 13 wins. The Supercross world was not disappointed at Anaheim 1... but later were.
James Stewart and Chad Reed engaged in a titanic battle at Anaheim 1. Reed and Stewart exchanged the lead several times, but it ended in tragedy around the midway point when James hit a false neutral and Chad Reed had no time to react; both combatants crashed. Reed remounted and finished in 3rd; Stewart was unable to restart his Yamaha and didn't finish the race. Stewart was credited with 19th. The winner turned out to be #33 Josh Grant on his new JGR Yamaha.
Angry over his Anaheim 1 DNF, Stewart reeled off 7 in a row from Phoenix to Atlanta. Chad Reed, who suffered from terrible starts, yet was able to come back to finish 2nd in all 7 races, finally got on the board at Indianapolis with his first win of the season. Both went into Daytona tied at 199 pts. apiece. Daytona provided another turning point for the season.
Chad Reed made it two in a row at Daytona. He came from near last to overtake the leader of the race... #338 Jason Lawrence on the AMPM J-Law Racing Yamaha. Lawrence, the defending Supercross Lites West champ, was riding the Supercross class out East after a controversial Lites West season. Lawrence led the race until about 4 laps to go when he surrendered the lead to the methodically charging Chad Reed. Unfortunately, Chad Reed has not won Daytona since. Stewart crashed hard in the first turn and got up -- bent bike and no visor on his helmet -- from last to 7th. This gave Chad Reed an 11-point lead after Daytona.
Stewart earned win #8 at New Orleans (the first race there since 2002), but Chad Reed was quick to respond at St. Louis. After 3 crashes total from James Stewart, counting 2 crashes in his heat race, Chad Reed made it win #3 of 2009; unfortunately, St. Louis was Reed's last win of the Supercross season. Stewart won Toronto and Jacksonville for wins 9 and 10 (to tie Jeremy McGrath's 1995 and 2000 record), but Seattle was the final turning point of the season.
At Seattle, James got an uncharacteristic bad start, but Chad Reed crashed in the first turn. Stewart was able to come up to 2nd place behind Team Kawasaki rookie Ryan Villopoto #2, the newest winner of 2009. Chad Reed (while fighting a stomach sickness) fought back for 7th. This gave James Stewart the points lead by 3 over Chad Reed. Up until Seattle, Chad Reed had been ultra consistent by finishing no worse than 3rd at the opener. Reed and Stewart battled again at the last race in Salt Lake City, but it ended with interference from James Stewart's San Manuel Yamaha teammate #38 Kyle Chisholm. James rode away with his 11th win of the season and a 6-point lead over Chad Reed. That meant Reed had to win the race and hope that Stewart finished 4th or worse to cause an upset.
In the main, Villopoto, Stewart, and Reed got out of the gate with almost identical starts. Villopoto got around Stewart, who was riding conservative to win the title. Reed came up behind Stewart, but didn't pass him the first time around. With Villopoto long gone, Reed had one last ditch effort to take the title away. When they went out to Monster Alley, Reed tried to send Stewart off his bike and into a tuffblock; it didn't work. James kept it on two wheels and rode it out in 3rd. At the checkers, it was Ryan Villopoto with his 2nd win of the season. Chad Reed finished 2nd, but the real winner was James Stewart in 3rd. Stewart earned his 2nd premiere class title (4 if you count the World Supercross titles in 2006 and 2007). Unfortunately, James' title defense in 2010 was a sham because his season ended due to injury after the first 3 races of the season.
Enjoy.

Superstars perhaps are not what brings battles and talent to the sport, but even how JS just refused to comment or excuse himself the horrible 2016 it os apparent how be just did not heed to do anhone any favors. Just a few yrs ago he was debatable. In 10 years i am still sure ge will be the legend that made stuff no one else could do. It is what peiple will remember and man, it was so awesome to be able to seee these ”stars” at it. Brought another level if you ask me. Comparing Chad with Stew, I do not get it. There were better mxers and sx ers from a serious alround standpint. But when James lined up it was what people were watcing. I`d say. Great upload.

No disagreements there, but in a court of public opinion, James did quite a bit to make himself forgotten with his 2.5-year game of hide-and-seek after '16. Why people call him the GOAT is completely beyond me, but he IS NOT the GOAT in any way, shape, or form. His accomplishments DO NOT come close to RC's (granted Stew did have stiffer competition). Ricky showed a lot of professionalism with all 3 teams he rode for, while James almost didn't once he got off Kawasaki and on the backwards-framed Yamaha. In my opinion, Chad Reed won this war over James Stewart because of longevity. Chad may have had a few bad breaks with season-ending injuries, but James made THE BIGGEST mistake of his life by going SX-only at the prime of his career; I don't blame Chad Reed for doing that since he cared more about Supercross, but he did come back to Motocross in 2009 and won the title. I do think he should've stopped competing in the MX season after his failed attempt in '11 and his knee injury in '12, but only Chad can tell you why he kept racing MX for as long as he did. Running the '15 MX season w/ Josh Grant on his TwoTwo Kawi team was the only wrong turn I saw from my perspective.

@@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames In professionalism and of the track antics Stew is no contender, neither in career since my oh my he left a lot on the table and was as close as it gets to another 450 title in...2006 right? But in sheer talent and perhaps the unfair advantage of being able to do what no one ever at least can say was seen before in dominance when in his groove, well, I cant see myself going apes over Dungeys titles or Chads achievments even though they are impressive. But it is almost 20 years ago and still impresses anyone to see that 16 year old embarrassing the pros by such margins. The fact that he raced a two stroke doing thus just adds to the myth. We have better racing today I guess, but it was a special treat to have James on the line. Adding more titles and less strange decisions would probably not do that legendary tale no good. It is apparent that the best total package isnt always what draws attention and reputation to any Star no matter what genre. If JLaw was back in 21 sober and doing a full season in 12th, that would be an achievment hard to par, but I am sure his name and mark in thus sport would suffer. Its an interesting phenomenon. And these polarities exist on the premises of the other, apples and pears, cant compare. Take care people!

@@user-lh8rb5wx6q Stew's 125 days were his best ones. Riding a 125 2-stroke against all those 4-strokes in 2004 was testimony to how dominant he truly was. Although his career ended very terribly and under circumstances you don't normally hear of everyday, JS did win 98 times in SX and MX. Nonetheless, RC is TRULY the GOAT because in simple perspective, the score is 150-98 in terms of wins. We call Jeremy McGrath the GOAT in Supercross because the score there is 72-48 in terms of wins as well, and 7-5 in terms of titles earned in comparison to RC; the score is 72-50 in terms of MC Vs. JS.

@matt henderson: I have the race on my channel, but this is what happened: Stewart was the common denominator of not one but TWO incidents that night. First of all, Stewart got too aggressive on Ivan Tedesco in practice and jumped to the inside of him. Tedesco sustained a wrist injury in that incident and was forced to sit out until Anaheim 1. The most unfortunate part is that Ivan was never the same after that incident. Secondly, Stewart and Reed were battling for the lead and with a few laps to go, Chad Reed unintentionally tapped the back of Stewart which caused James to jump off the track. What James did after that was inexcusable under any circumstance -- he re-entered the track without looking (like a kid running into the road to retrieve a ball) and Travis Preston (who was already airborne at the time) plowed into him. Stewart was able to finish the race in 3rd, but he had seriously hurt his ankle from the collision with Preston. After all that, the AMA was not very happy with Stewart. He was fined $6,000 ($2,000 from the Tedesco incident + $4,000 for the Preston incident) and placed on probation until the conclusion of the 2007 Supercross season.

How did you come up with Stewart going for his 5th supercross title. He had only 2 that count as AMA national titkes as his 250 sx title doesnt count, nor does his "world sx title." I guess thats how you came uo.with it,you counted the world sx title and his lites title along with his two official national sx titles. A little misleading, but if you want to highlight an officially counted stat his total SX wins would be more impressive.
