It's cool and I get it, its a bad example for the majority of people that will watch this video. When I shot this video I lived an a country area and normally my warmups would last 30 seconds or long enough for me to clean the car. But where I lived I could drive with my rpm under 2.5k really easy normally shifting just above 2k. I would always keep my rpm low until the car had warmed up. Now that I live near Monterey there is no way you can merge traffic under 3.5k so I let the car warm up. Thankfully its around 60F year round so warmups are pretty quick.

Truth be told, if you get to have a place where you can have mains power plugged to the car, a block heater is one of the best things you can do for your car in the winter, short of winter tires. It really reduces the wear and tear on those first few miles. The other advantage, is that you can ad an interior heater as well .. and we just love defrosted windows, don't we ? :)
@cka1799

Grumpy ol' Boot yeah. I had a stay in Missouri with the temp was -20F even after a long warm up I had to drive slow to warm the transmission. Do they make transmission heaters or does a block heater keep it all warm enough?

Thank you because I'm trying to learn how to drive my Subaru in the snow. I'm used to a Toyota RAV and it drove completely different with four-wheel drive than the asymmetrical all-wheel drive of a Subaru. Now what kind of tires did you have? cuz we had our 4th snowstorm in October in Truckee/Tahoe... California wet cement they call it. I got stuck high centered in a foot of snow (It also gets super cold in Truckee) But so did another Subaru and a big SUV... We had to dig out the snow from underneath the cars and a plow came and cleared the road behind us so we could roll back onto it. I didn't know to turn off my anti skid control and I hadn't had time to put winter tires on yet, along with everybody else in Truckee. Studs aren't even legal in California until November 1st.
@edrii
@edrii 2 года назад
Not much you can really do if your high centered because you wont have traction. In this video I'm floating on top of the snow. My tires are nearly bald in this video. The rocking technique I'm using keeps me from spinning a hole and high centering, aka framing out. going back an forth was helping to pack the snow. If I would have had tires with more lugs I probably would have dug a hole and been stuck. Just need to think about what kind of snow your in and and how need to drive in it. More than 9 inches of snow and you need to think about floating on top with out trying to dig and push snow. Winter tires will make a huge difference. Enjoy the Subaru!

Will snow chains help? Should one put on snow chains driving at this situation or just give up driving? I live in a tropical country with absolutely zero snow driving experience.
@MemphisMojo15s
@MemphisMojo15s 8 лет назад
chains do help. a lot. the only problem with chains is if you get out of this situation, and you're on a highway, chances are it will be clear and you can only go around 30mph. it will take a few minutes to take them off, then, you may need them back on once you get back to, let's say, your own driveway. they'll beat you to death and they also grip so well that you can break something in your drivetrain if you don't realize how much gas you're giving it. I could honestly plow thru 20" of snow in a 2wd truck with added weight in the bed, if I had chains on. I've used them a whole lot here where I live, but now I put snow tires or blocked aggressive tread type tires on, with sipes in the tread blocks which are for good snow traction and minimal added ice traction. come look at some of my videos on my Firestone WinterForce tires and my parents Firestone Destination LE2 tires..

Popular mechanic. In the thick of winter, the common wisdom is that when you are gearing up to take your truck out in the cold and snow, you should step outside, start up your engine, and let it idle to warm up. But contrary to popular belief, this does not prolong the life of your engine; in fact, it decreases it by stripping oil away from the engine's cylinders and pistons.In a nutshell, an internal combustion engine works by using pistons to compress a mixture of air and vaporized fuel within a cylinder. The compressed mixture is then ignited to create a combustion event-a little controlled explosion that powers the engine.When your engine is cold, the gasoline is less likely to evaporate and create the correct ratio of air and vaporized fuel for combustion. Engines with electronic fuel injection have sensors that compensate for the cold by pumping more gasoline into the mixture. The engine continues to run rich in this way until it heats up to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a19086/warming-up-your-car-in-the-cold-just-harms-engine/

Monica Candice it was 29 degrees and I run synthetic in the winter to make sure it flows. Additional I won't run rpm over 2k on a cold motor regardless of temp. My Subaru has 230k miles and and runs smooth even in -18F temps. Btw when it's that cold I do let it warm up. 29 degrees just doesn't warrant a 10 minute warmup unless you want to floor it. But then you motor should be at the proper operating temp. Imo

I can say all the rocking was done without applying throttle. Or maybe your comment was sarcastic and I missed it. Tech Mad I really wish the U.S. allowed the diesels just for the increased fuel economy. I'm touring Ireland now and getting 47 mpg or close to 60 mpg imperial. I've always wondered how the emission restrictions can be justified considering a 50% increase in fuel economy. I'd like to see the data.

@cka1799
@cka1799 3 года назад
Honestly I'm not sure how specific your asking. There are differences in the awd between the manual and autos but you cant go wrong with either. I can't speak for the 03 but my 09 has a very solid build and solid components for what it is. I'm near 300k now and pretty much everything I've done I would consider maintenance. I replaces all he hubs, breaks, rotors, and several ball joints around 230k. Everything else is oil change, tires, wiper blades and bulbs. I do have 2 breaks that were my fault/ the dealer. 1st - I drove about 50 miles with the spare tire on the front drivers side. This messed up my center diff and caused my car to torque bind on asphalt after the car was driven and warmed up. Drove it for about 30k like this till I decided it was annoying and replaced it myself. Moral of this story, if you have to ride the spare, put it on the rear. If you have an auto pull the fuse and make your car front wheel drive. this way you won't damage anything. 2nd - I blame this more on the deal as I was told the timing belt was replaced when I bought the car but I slipped some teeth on the timing belt. Moral of this story is change your timing belt every 100k, I went almost double (not knowing). I think the bearing and other stock components can safely go 200k but not the belt. If your doing it yourself its pretty easy to listen for bearing to start going bad and then replace them. If your paying someone, it shouldn't take more than 4 hours to put a new belt on. Probably a lot lets if they really know what they are doing.
