In the final game Matsui scored 6 of the 7 runs to take the series. He came out of nowhere, so glad he won WSMVP. This Yankees team was so fun to watch
Chase Utley should’ve won the MVP! And I’m a Yankees fan! Don’t know why they kept pitching to him! Giraldi and coaching staff were pig headed; you could tell a Utley was locked in the entire series…stop with the stats and go with your eyes and guts!
Cam Yes let’s ignore the fact that Boston is the most successful franchise so far this century. We have a title in our current window. Get one in your current window and then we can talk.
This was the end of an era to me, the core of this team is the core of the team that owned baseball in the late 90’s. 5 world championships from 96 98 99 00 and 09…and two appearances where they didn’t win. Pretty damn impressive.
Yes, Pedro was signed like mid-Series, and at his presser, said "I'm gonna show De Jankees who dey daddy is"...and then proceeded to get shitrocked in the only game he pitched. The front pages of the papers the next day were glorious
Watching the games since baseball returned has been incredibly weird for me. To watch Judge or Stanton or any Yankee hit a home run at Yankee Stadium is super strange because its just.........quiet. And the video is so still bc the fans are not there rocking the building so hard that the cameras shake. It's the weirdest thing EVER....
The way Matsui drives in 6 RBI to clinch the World Series, tie a 50 year old record, and just casually gets up and adjusts his gloves after each hit, can’t even read his face for emotion. That dude was cool
I remember trick or treating as a 12 year old while game 3 was going on and this one house had the game on and saw I was dressed as Derek Jeter and invited us all inside to watch the rest of the inning. Great memory. Go Yanks!
Sports wise from the spring of 2008 to February of 2011 the "Blue Bloods of North American Sports all got Titles NHL-Red Wings 08 NBA-Celtics 08, Lakers 09&10 NFL-Steelers 08 (Feb 0f 09), Packers 10 (Feb of '11) MLB-Yankees-09 NCAAB-Kansas 08, UNC 09 NCAFF-Alabama 09 (Jan of 2010)
@@BobbySacamano he just broke into the big leagues around 09 and has been very consistent with what he brings to the table. My comment was meant to assert the idea that its not THAT surprising he still plays
@@tawmydukes And now he's in his late 30's and has been a total joke for the Yankees for years and for most of his glorified AAA career. Time to cut his sorry ass loose.
@@brettsinger9565 check out his calls on the David Tyree catch and the 2001 World Series, to name 2 off the top of my head. He's turned dozens of historically exciting plays into the mundane. He's since turned that around but it sounds fake considering his past performances.
2011 World Series. Some call it a tribute, but the Freese walk off call was a total rip off of his dad because he is very unoriginal, overstates the way obvious, and ive seen the word mundane passed around. If youre a Yankees fan, listen to the differences between the Sierra, Mattingly, and O'Neil homers called by Gary Thorne in the 95 ALDS. Gary Thorne makes Joe Buck look like buzz killington from family guy.
Great offense on both sides, I was so stressed wanting the Yanks to win, I truly missed what a great series this was, the see-saw battles. I have to be honest, I’m 54 yrs old and don’t enjoy baseball when the Yankees get in the playoffs, it’s so damned nerve wracking I can’t enjoy the games. Funny, in the 90’s when the Yankees had that great run I did enjoy it. I was in jail in ‘96 so baseball wasn’t a priority, ‘97, ‘98, and ‘99 I was still using drugs, so it was just ok. I got clean 11/12/99 so in October 2000 I was 11 months sober and really enjoyed the Subway Series. I was roofing at the time and was breathing very heavy taking shingles up the ladder, I decided to quit smoking on 10/21/2000 Game 1 of the Met/Yankee World Series! Every day has been a gift since, now I get too stressed out watching post season baseball with the Yankees in it! Life is beyond strange!!!
it all starters back in 2006 o 2007 when they almsot made it to the postseason or don't remember if they got eliminated on the first round . but from 2007 to 2010 Phil's were a pretty good team to watch
@@gabters215 in 06 jimmy rollins predicted they would catch the mets that had a like six game lead with less than a month to play and they did to win the nl east that year they lost early in playoffs ur right then From 06 on they were dominate and shluld of won a couple more rings from 08 to like 2012. with all the talent they had the 08 team wasntneven their best team and they won the world series Shpuld of won back to back in 09 against the yankees. Then they ended up getting roy halladay cliff lee had cole hamels alrrady and roy oswalt their starting rotation was unreal talent wise 2010 they won over 100 games but they didnt win another title a damn shame
These were the Yankees I grew up watching. First ever sports memory was my first time in the old stadium in 06 and all I remember is everyone being on top of you and the whole stadium shaking whenever one of the big 3 came to bat. Wish I could go back tbh
He tied the record for most homers in the world series. He was rocking cc satrashia. Lefty on lefty too ryan howard could not hit all them leftys to save his life.utley carried that squad they would of got swept withpit him
Damon had a noodle arm but man was he fast, and a smart baseball player. I loved this team so much, no other team was as much fun as this. I was a senior in college at the time and popped champagne in my dorm after the final out.
As a Yankee fan I forgot how much Joe Buck hated the Yankees. All home run call for Phillies were whooped up. All Yankee home runs start with, in a monotone "...and here is a fly ball"
I remember in those days the saying was "The only reason the Phillies didn't won the 2009 World Series was because Cliff Lee couldn't pitch every game" He was that dominant specially against my Yankees. Glad we got that series though. Both team where incredible and deserving of the Ring.
I'm a lifelong Yankee fan, born in 1989 in Peekskill New York, this is the last time in my lifetime the Yankees won the world series. Also it's been the longest world series drought for the Yankees in my life time since then.
GOATtheJ Ngl I did NOT remember Happ in the ‘09 Philly rotation. I watched that WS and only cared to remember the Yankees roster. My small 8 yo mind just considered them enemies 🤣
As a Mets fan who has family that supports both Mets and Yankees, it was bittersweet watching the Yankees beat the Phillies. I dont hate the Yankees I have a soft spot for them and was thrilled when they beat Philly.
2009 year and season of Championship winning teams: Steelers, Lakers, Penguins, FC Barcelona, Yankees and Alabama! Talk about the powerhouse teams right there! 🏆💪
11:40 Six year old me was ready to go through the TV screen. I still have my small Pedro Feliz jersey. That comeback by the Yankees in the next inning was and still is heartbreaking to me. I wish the Phillies won in 2022, but 2009 will always be haunting to me.
Game 4: When it happened, I thought the main headline would be that A-Rod had cemented his postseason of redemption with the game-winning 9th inning double to put the Yankees up 3-1 in the series, which may have been his most important, crucial hit of his career. Perhaps even iconic. As time passed, the story of that game became more about Johnny Damon being crafty and stealing 2nd and then 3rd on the same play to set up the A-Rod double in that 9th inning rally. While that was a brilliant play, I felt that A-Rod needed that double for his legacy and he got it. I was thrilled for him. Of course this was before I knew just how bad of a steroid guy (Biogenesis?!?!) he really was. Here, we see A-Rod's double but no Damon double-stolen base preceding it, which feels odd. I get it though, this reel is mostly only showing how the runs were scored. I would have included big strikeouts, great defensive plays, last outs of the game, but then again my highlight reels tend to be a bit long, as do my comments.
Owned ccsatrashia they would of got swept eithpit him for real. Utley tiied most home runs in a world series. He definetly could of what he did was historical
Utley did was historic he could of won the mvp. If they won it no doubt they blew two games. The man hit the most home runs in a world series . Its possible we will never see that performanc again in our lives !!!!
imagine being hyped that your team is playing in the World Series only to be bored out of your fucking mind by the wondrous commentary of one Joe Buck.........
Say what you want about Alex Rodriguez, but we wouldn't have won the title without him that postseason. I know Godzilla gets alot of talk and as well as he should he did alot in the WS but Rodriguez finally came through in a postseason
Surprised at how many players in that World Series have had important moments with other teams. Happ pitches for us now, Utley had the slide, Pedro was huge with the Sox. Also, Pettite wore a jacket on the bases. Didn’t think that was legal.
Man I'm still not over this loss. Games 3 and 4 especially were the games that just tore my heart out. A-Rod hitting the "home run" because the camera was jutting out into the field; Damon stealing the free base...Watching this again, it seems that the lineups were pretty evenly-matched in terms of firepower, so ultimately though I think it was the starting pitching that made the difference. Cliff Lee was outstanding, but Hamels had an off year, and Pedro really was past his prime and beyond. The irony is that the Phillies totally had Sabathia's number, both in 08 when he was with Milwaukee and in this series. The critical moment in the series I think was the top of the 9th in game 4. Feliz had just tied it with a homer in the 8th and the Phillies really needed to keep it tied going into the bottom of the ninth.
If the camera wasn't there, the ball goes over the fence. It's the object that prevented that. You can see from the side view the trajectory of the ball. If the ball wasn't a homerun, it would have hit the railing instead. But, it only hits the camera because the camera is on top of the fence. If there was just a wall with a line, and on top of that line is a HR, Alex's ball hit above the line. It hits the camera because it's also above that line. I get that this WS hurts for you, and I sympathize, Phillies played great, but Alex's ball was definitely a home run. Great series, though. Honestly, I've only watched the official WS video, and I forgot how close and back and forth these games were. That and how much Utley, had the Phillies won, would have been MVP because he murdered that WS.
How do you not include Cliff Lees two fielding plays in the first game. You should show any spectacular fielding plays, they don’t have to only be scoring highlights.
Nope, as a non-baseball fan I can tell you that 90% of us don't give a shit about fielding plays. It's just boring. "oh my god he caught the ball...! but he's wearing a mitt ... so ... is it really that cool?" No. It's not. Play a real sport or stfu.
I forgot the Philies won the first game an had the leads in games 2 an 3 it shows how good the 2009 Yankees team really was there pitching wasnt the greatest but Andy Pettitte was a good playoff pitcher id match him with anyone in the playoffs the Yankees beat a Philies team who had Doc Holliday, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, and Pedro Martinez
He was the perfect guy too against that lefty lineup of howard and utley thats why even tgough utley was on a tear against cc whose lefty they just couldnt get to petiitte
