200GB Sega Dreamcast Mod - Retro Console Restoration

In this video I work on a Sega Dreamcast that's been sitting in my repair pile for almost a year. I actually unboxed this Dreamcast as part of a bulk faulty console purchase in the very first video I uploaded to this channel! A couple of months ago I purchased another bulk console lot, and I happened to come across Dreamcast controllers and VMUs. It was time to work on this puppy.
The unit fired up just fine so it didn't look like I had any power issues to address. The clock battery was dead and wouldn't recharge (Dreamcast internal battery is rechargeable). Unsurprisingly, the optical drive wouldn't read discs. While I could have attempted an optical drive repair along with the other minor issues that needed to be addressed, I instead opted for an optical drive emulator, i.e. the GDEMU.
The Dreamcast can be a prohibitively expensive system to collect games for, and with near perfect compatibility with the GDEMU it was the obvious choice. I was able to fit over 150 games on the system and am already enjoying some of my favorite games from childhood (indeed, I owned a Dreamcast while in high school and had about 15 games for it by the time I got rid of it).
This is one of my favorite projects so far (I feel like I've said that a few times). But really, I don't know why I waited this long. This system is a blast and incredibly fun. I'm looking forward to the holidays this year, I know what I'll be doing.

A Dreamcast is still on my top list of retro console i want, and definitly a modded one.

Not a bad time to pick one up with the maturity of an ODE like the GDEMU. I'd love to do the same with a platform like the Saturn but its prohibitively expensive right now.

@@BorderlineOCD Thank you for the reaction, sorry for the late reply. These days there are so many cool things to do with older consoles, it's amazing :) The Dreamcast goes here second hand still for high prices, some people still think they can get 100 euro for a console with a few games or in very bad condition.

The quality and size make some difference. I have some leftover generic braid that I no longer use because the MG Chemicals stuff works much better. I don't want to toss it out though so I plan to use it until it's done but every time I take it out I feel the difference. You can always add more flux to help a cheap braid wick up the solder better otherwise just buy a couple of rolls of something from a reputable manufacturer, it does make it easier.

@@BorderlineOCD Had to replace NEC TOKIN. Tested by heating the motherboard with heat gun then keeping the heat on the caps for 15 - 30 seconds. After putting the PS3 back together worked like a charm until it YLODed again. Found some cheapish tantalum replacement caps on ebay (430uf) and replaced the two by RSX, ps3 has been running well for the better part of a year now. When swapping the caps be sure to preheat the whole motherboard and cover the area by the NEC TOKIN with kapton tape to avoid blowing away really small SMDs in that area.

The dreamcast is wonderful, I still have mine permanently connected to the TV. It's such a good console with a fantastic arcade/pickup-n-play library. It's nice to play after a hard day at work, or for fun when friends are around. One thing I can really recommend is choosing a modern cable/converter. Official VGA cables offer exceptional image quality. but it is hard to find something that works well and doesn't cost a fortune, or even TVs having VGA input. The BitFunX on ebay isn't perfect, but it is a super crystal sharp VGA to hdmi adapter with great color accuracy that requires no extra power, and it is cheap! The only issue is that the built in scaler treats the 720x480 as 640x480 and scale it too much. the image becomes a bit too narrow and the pixelgrid isn't perfect. but for around 16$ on ebay it is leap years away from RCA, and a whole lot better than even the smudgy inaccurate color output of the "pound cable". :)
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 4 года назад
I'd like to do the HDMI mod when prices come down a little. I have to be honest I can't stand stretched pixels, but that's just me... It doesn't bother some folks so as long as you're enjoying your beloved Dreamcast more power to you.
@PixelShade
@PixelShade 3 года назад
@@BorderlineOCD the pixels aren't actually stretched... it's a slightly narrower 4:3 aspect ratio.... The image is really sharp and you can't really tell about the uneven pixel grid. Until a game uses a lot of consequent midtones. Then you can see an extremely subtle slight rainbow effect on the 16-bit dither pattern (not the pixels themselves).... but it's extremely subtle and only really apparent in Code Veronica, or perhaps shemue in a rainy day. You don't notice a thing in Sonic Adventures, Phantasy Star Online, Soul Calubur, Dead or Alive, Jet Set Radio etc. :) During most cases. the bitfunx does a good job... DC2HDMI is wonderful, but it requires pro level soldering skills and is quite expensive. I also really don't want to cut in my Dreamcast chassi (which is in pristine condition)... I just kind of wished that the bitfunx adapter was available with a scaler that could handle 720x480p properly.

I too came across this info during my research and thought it was so unusual. Some repair folks shared anecdotal feedback of repairing the same system multiple times for a blown fuse because kids would ignore his warnings not to yank the controllers out. I recently bought a VA1 Dreamcast “as is” with the comment, “powers on, but no cables to test”, for a decent price. Sure enough, while it powered on, it wouldn’t respond to my controller inputs. Bought the repair kit from your link along with the rechargeable cell, and voila! Works like a charm, and better yet, the laser reads discs just fine! I’ve already got a GDEMU on order, but better yet, I can save the laser for my original Dreamcast that I bought for $49.99 back when Sega announced they were discontinuing the Dreamcast in February of 2001. Thanks! I look forward to other videos I can use as reference in the future. If you ever have the opportunity to attempt a laser repair on a fat PS2 (SCPH-31001-R), I look forward to it. My original PS2 has sadly been acting up. :( The R seems to be controversial, because more than one laser was used on this model, apparently.

I've never seen that PSU Mod- only that one where you put 3 x 1k Resistors at the 12V rail. I actually like the idea to remove the power converter better as you completely get rid of the 12V rail.

my only gripe is back when i had a Dreamcast i remember putting in 500+ burnt disc games into my DC and it would play them all PS1 + PS2 +Dreamcast and i had a huge selection of burnt discs later i found out they stop production of the dream cast for that very reason ... later i got a PS1 with a mode from a sketchy guy that did the same thing PS1/PS2 games all Burnt discs lol .. the novelty of discs and hard copy was great ..

I love this video. I've done the rechargeable battery replacement and the GDEMU mods, but I was very curious about the 12-volt load removal. How did that work out for you? Where did you learn about that? Do you have to do anything else besides desoldering it?
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD Год назад
Learned about disabling the 12V rail on Voultar's Dreamcast video. Other modders prefer to create a dummy load using a large resistor instead. A UK modded named Four X does this in his Dreamcast video. My system is working great and no problems since I performed this mod. Having said that I kept the regulator safe in a parts bin should I ever need to reinstall it.

@@BorderlineOCD have you learned anything about the RGB signal and how it relates to the 12V load? I wish to hook up my Dreamcast to a scart cable and retrotink to feed it to an hdtv, but I hear the 12v might have an effect on this. Thank you for your reply, BTW.

Hi there, love your build. Looking pretty clean. I just wanted you to know, that it's definitely possible to combine a USB-GDrom (instead of the GDemu) with a 2TB 2.5inch HDD. But that's only necessary for a complete TOSEC ROM collection of all regions, which is around 1.2 TB.

If you thread in one of the standoffs into the metal below the GDEMU you can use a screw that was securing the GDrom drive to hold the GDEMU very securely.
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 4 года назад
That's a good idea. I wonder if that was the intention of the board's design? I guess it would only fit on the lower left hole but should be plenty to secure it in place.
@Ty-sm9cv
@Ty-sm9cv 4 года назад
@@BorderlineOCD you can do this with the lower left AND upper right, I just checked. you have to modify the plastic piece on it a bit to be able to thread into the lower left one IIRC, but it's a lot more secure, which I think is important for the safety of the connector... especially if you're not using one of those extensions

@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 4 года назад
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Most faulty Dreamcasts you find online have bad lasers, which a GDEMU mod resolves for good. The fuse-resistor is a common issue on these systems, so you'll find ones with dead controllers and that is usually the problem. You might come across a system with a bad PSU but I haven't seen many listed on eBay. People love the picoPSU mod but I'm not convinced its worthwhile replacing a working power supply. If it's faulty then sure but the Dreamcast PSU was over-engineered to begin with and is a good PSU. As for capacitors, they are not known to fail on the Dreamcast (compared to the Sega Saturn which is another story altogether and has documented capacitor problems). I'm not a fan of doing capacitor swaps unless there is a problem, and the Dreamcast isn't going to be an issue for another decade. Of course, YMMV and if there is a sign that capacitors are ballooning or leaking, replace them with good quality caps (compared to low-tier caps like the one I received in the controller board kit). I recently watched a Voultar livestream where he addressed his thoughts on recapping, and according to him most "preventative" re-cap jobs are unnecessary with the exception of a list of systems that are known to have issues (from the 6th generation consoles only the Xbox clock cap is an offender).

I have the links to my soldering toolkit in the video description. You're referring to the solder braid or solder wick which is used to remove solder. As for the liquid, thats flux which helps solder flow and adhere.
