My brother gave his mid 2010 macbook pro to me last month. I replaced it with an SSD and a new battery and now it works fine. It beats my dell i3 inspiron laptop in terms of boot up and app opening. so glad to have this laptop

Sounds good! I have the mid 2010 13". When I tased to a niece that replaced hers with a newer MacBook, she mentioned she didn't like the lack of plugins along left side and that she had to buy extra items to use what she was use to. Cheers!

Your boot time of 48 seconds for the first time is actualy slow, if you boot from a new drive for the first time, always press and hold alt+cmd+R+P when you hear the chime, this wil reset your nvram. You will notice a inprovement in bootup speed for the first time.
@TechnoBabble
@TechnoBabble 6 лет назад
Didn't know that, I'll try it sometime but honestly I don't think there will be a huge improvement. It's not the most amazing SSD and it's stuck on SATA2 speeds because of the age of the laptop.
@noahbecerra
@noahbecerra 6 лет назад
TechnoBabble the first 10-20 seconds shouldn’t really be counted anyways. It had to search for a operating system to boot off of at first, which is why it took a little bit for the Apple logo to show up.
@manuel-xax
@manuel-xax 4 года назад
Resetting the nvram is only one part of « the three steps trick » in such situation :-) Given the age of the machine, I bet resetting as well the SMC is a must. And last but not least, in the system preferences, the whole startup speed is improved when telling macOS which drive it should seek first when powered on. Hence solving that seek time issue described in the previous comment :-) Since it was your first « surgery » on a Mac you most likely didn’t knew that macOS is able to boot up from external support (usb drives, SD cards). I’m saying this because having swapped hdd & sdd before cloning the system might have been faster this way. Nice video anyway !
@SimplyJ3sse
@SimplyJ3sse 6 лет назад
If I remember right, that delay on startup before it starts loading the OS can be resolved by selecting your new SSD from the startup options in the settings app and setting the ssd as the startup disk.

As of now (07-2018) i'm still using my old 15" mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Cool thing is you can just put a SSD and 2x 4gb 1067 MHz DDR3 memory modules in there. I do have the 2,66 Ghz i7 which might help. My system does run very hot (doing graphic design and some animation in Ae). But if you're not running it on the go you can have it sit on a dual fan cooling pad (like Cooler Master). These are good Frankenstein models that aren't made anymore.... #glue

Unplugging the battery is all , you dont need fo actually remove it. Just make sure the plug doesn't fall right back down onto the contact. Also you will get way faster speeds with a 2012 SSD cable instead of using the same HDD cable the 2010 model has. Secondly you need to enable trim, open command terminal, Enter-> sudo enable trim Then yes ,enter password, yes,yes. Done

Only specific models of these old Macbook Pros can actually support 16gb of RAM, this one doesn't. And besides, the person using it would have no use for it, in fact they probably didn't even need the upgrade to 8gb.

If I were to upgrade my mid 2010 MacBook with the same specs as yours, could I run Pro Tools okay?
@TechnoBabble
@TechnoBabble 6 лет назад
That entirely depends on what you're trying to do. If your project needs more RAM then upgrading your RAM might help, but if the bottleneck is entirely to do with processing power (which for Pro Tools it probably is) then no this upgrade won't help you at all.

if the laptop that you are getting is the same model as this one then I don't think that you can upgrade to 16gb of RAM. I believe the max is 8gb, but even if you could the rest of the system is too slow for any serious video editing, so more RAM wouldn't help.

Grandma Adelaide the 2010 unibody can do 16gb ram you just have to upgrade hdd to sdd and purchase a compatible ram chip and ssd. Go to OWC on google and they sell all Mac parts and have compatible parts to make a 09-10 work like a 17. Also only 1066mhz will work not the 1333 one

Macbook pro 2010 13" still rocks can simply upgraded to 10GB (2GB + 8GB) DDR3 1.5v of RAM if you don't want to buy the apple memory which is much more expensive. Beware that the 2GB ram must be in slot 1 (buttom one). This mac book just read the memory speed from the first ram. If you got a Kingston / ADATA 8GB, you may flash the ram SPD and set the speed to 1066MHz. After that you can get another whatever 8GB and run with 16GB ram. 16GB ram with SSD... ha~ should be a 2018 spec
@TechnoBabble
@TechnoBabble 6 лет назад
You can't run 16gb unless your model's memory controller supports it, this one does not. It supports a max of 8gb total.
@samuel0228
@samuel0228 6 лет назад
You are right if you follow the official spec. The official claim that 13" is 8GB (2x4GB) max which is the same as the 15" and 17" model. But in fact, the Nvidia Geforce 320m in Macbook Pro 2010 13" can run in 16GB of ram (2x8GB 1066MHz) stably. However for 15" and 17" was using intel chipset and result was only 8GB max. My wife's MacBook Pro 2010 is running in 2GB(1066MHz) + 8GB (whatever speed with 16 chips, DDR3 1.5v) in High Sierra. I hope my experience can help anyone who would like to upgrade the MacBook and make less electronic rubbish for the Earth. And I should say, really thanks TechnoBabble for the great video

Can you skip the cloning procedure with the hard drives? I bought this same MacBook for $200 from a friend, so I dont need any of his previous files. @TechnoBabble

You don't need to clone the drive, but you do need to create an installer on a USB flash drive using a Mac, so do that before swapping out the drive.

Just hook up new ssd into a usb enclosure, plug it in. Enable. Go to disk utility. Select the external ssd and erase, format mac os extended journaled. The go to app store and download OS , after downloading continue and select install drive as external ssd. Once install is done you can swap drive.

Very unlikely, your big bottleneck on a machine like this for any sort of content creation would be the CPU and GPU, I edit my 4k video off of a mechanical hard drive, though more RAM can certainly help if you're running out. 1080p video might be alright in iMovie or Final Cut given the very good optimization those pieces of software might have.
