@Bhraihh The tsunami warning predicted 3m waves, the sea wall is 10m high, they never ever expected a Tsunami in excess of 15m. The biggest ever recorded in Japan before was 6m. Even people in designated tsunami shelters died when the waves engulfed those as well.

But it wasn't here that had 15m waves right? Isn't this place a bit too far north to have the biggest impact?

Sad that most of the deaths were the elderly. Those who were unable to leave there homes or out run a tsunami. Very sad. Imagine being stuck home and your son or daughter is at work and you are helpless. No one there to come save you. Just waiting for the tsunami to come sweep your house away with you in it. Can't imagine how scary that must have been.

Many died on the road, I believe, really. I'm shocked to see cars moving near the shore, I was expecting that people had already left the shore right after the huge earthquake knowing about a tsunami will come right after it. I've seen so many videos where moving cars were swept on the roads on other areas as well.

In a good number of cases, the drivers were trying to reach their families, there loved ones - the alternative - there is the idea of tsunami tendenko (proceeding separately/fending for yourself) and hope to join up after, rather than before, a widespread and imminent danger wasting the chance to escape. Watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wymX0J4G8r8.html Tendenko: Surviving the Tsunami | Witness Al Jazeera English

Saw the video on Tendenko and it was very good. “Don’t look back”. The reason for doing this is to keep people going up and not down to look for family. There were very good numbers on survivors. A lady had to let go of her grandfather’s hand, fortunately a couple of men managed to get him up the hill.

I want to thank the poster for his understanding of the concept of holding the camera still. Too many of the videos sweep back and forth, zoom in and out. As a result, in attempt to see everything, they see detail of nothing. This video represents good camera work. As for the lack of sound, I would rather the silence than the inappropriate soundtracks that so many think is needed to heighten the drama. Thank you for a post that one can watch and understand. Condolences to Japan and her people.

This place was very lucky. Because of it's geography the wave was travelling parallel to the shore and never actually hit the town. Some super-minor street flooding and some ships sunk. Those people must have breathed a sigh of relief after they saw what happened elsewhere. What I find totally amazing is how one large ship caught in the current zips by an anchored ship and then does a complete 180 degree turn in front of it and then zips back the other way just yards away without ever touching it.
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 Год назад
The ships were moving oddly because of eddies caused by the strong currents. All waves eventually hit a shore at about 90º so the less than devastating impact was due to the size of the tsunami and local geography above and below the surface.

I would've thought it had to be the end of the world and I'm sure that's what it felt like to many of these people. The power of mother nature, the ocean and just water is a powerful thing to see.

Good video! As I cannot understand Japanese, I am left to wonder what the annotations said. Also, I agree with @Bhraihh that too many people were driving at the shoreline, when they should have been heading for the hills or tall, reinforced concrete & steel buildings. Thanks for the video.
@lindacarruthers3423
@lindacarruthers3423 3 года назад
Psycotria. The Japanese had absolutely no idea of the magnitude of the coming tsunami . To say they were behaving stupidly (as in not heading for safe buildings ,not driving on the shoreline) is incorrect .The information they based their decisions on was not right for this event . Previous tsunamis could not prepare them for these colossal waves . This monster could never have been expected . Now of course it is different . Now they are very very aware of what they could expect , and at great cost Japan is now building defence structures that really would stop a monster if required to do so .
@psycotria
@psycotria 3 года назад
@@lindacarruthers3423 Hi! A reply after 9 years!... Japanese are educated about tsunamis from an early age. They experience several tsunamis a year, most not exceeding 1 ft. As the negative wave came first, they watched the water flow out for almost an hour in places. Also, they were being continuously warned that a "major tsunami" was forming. The size was indicated by the amount of water that receded. Several factors combined to produce a sharp rise in amplitude that caught many by surprise. I never said they were "behaving stupidly" Those are your words. Take care.
@lindacarruthers3423
@lindacarruthers3423 3 года назад
@@psycotria Hello . I thought I qualified my use of the word ‘stupidly’ etc by using brackets . I apologize if it seemed I attributed that word to you . I wrote as I did since I couldn’t bear the thought of there seeming to be even a hint of criticism toward the Japanese in light of the horrible events Japan experienced . Also I had read that though the population is of course prepared for the arrival of a tsunami, they really had not imagined the size of this one . I read that Brazil had experienced a tsunami fairly close to that time , and apparently much of the populace based their behaviour on how that one behaved .the Brazil tsunami was smaller . I was born in NewZealand where we had regular earthquake drills throughout our school life , and sometimes towns ran earthquake drills . The real thing is very different from any drill , ( Christchurch earthquake) and I would imagine this tsunami was one heck of a shock despite preparation . Be that as it may , sorry if my remarks struck you as critical to your comment and I’m glad of your effort in writing in response .

What Ive noticed in all these videos Ive watched recently is that a warning is recieved that a Tsunami is coming so why dont all these ships quickly take to sea rather than stay and end up being destroyed! Surely it would be safer in the open sea than in a confined harbour.
@Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88
@Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88 2 года назад
If they were already on their boat, engine running, they might make it far enough out to sea to not be drawn back in by the tsunami. But, with the larger ones especially, it can take 15 mins or more to start a cold marine engine and bring it up to full power. They are also extremely slow to maneuver which is a bad thing if they are turned sideways in heavy swells. Also, they not only have to contend with the wave height but the movement of the entire body of water. It would be like trying to outrun a landslide while the ground beneath you is moving in the opposite direction. Much of the oral history on tsunami told by Japanese talks about people who return to the ocean too soon, either out of curiosity or concern for neighbors, and are never seen again. Of fishermen who try to save their boats, a seemingly safe venture, only to capsized from the relentless pounding of the water. In short, unless I'm already underway I'd get off the boat and save myself. I can always get another boat, especially if I have some form of insurance.

The only explanation I can find that many Japanese were in their cars driving parallel to the shoreline, when they had some time to get away, is that maybe they underestimated the power of the tsunami
@HurricaneForceGaming

Actually as the wave comes in it slows down. When it slows down the waves behind it join up with it (they merge) to create a giant wave. I know a lot about tsunamis I'm doing a report on them in school

I just watched a video about this particular city, and apparently the sea hit a peninsula which pushed it north instead of into the city. The amount that was making it in was mostly held in by the sea walls but apparently one person still died there.

nice people, yes. But also kind of dumb people too. Not taking this serious despite all the warnings. They're out there with their cell phone cameras instead of running to safety. Many lives lost needlessly.

@Bhraihh Moral of story: "If you are in a 9.0 earthquake that lasts for 5 minutes and you are near the coast - get to high ground immediately". These people were probably trying to save their cars, computers or cash registers. And it cost many of them their lives.
@tewaewae

there was only one death in Hachinohe, a local lady drove her husband to his boat so he could steam out to see, she was caught in her car trying to get back to high ground. He and the boat were saved.

You can't generalise like that, it isn't fair. They may have children they're trying to get to, perhaps they didn't think it would be so bad, or how fast it came in some places. Or elderly family who would find it difficult to get to somewhere high. Sometimes it really is better to say nothing!

If they are unmoored and powered up, they can go out to sea and ride among the waves. Otherwise, they would just suffer the same fate as those cars still travelling when the tsunami is just mere meters behind them.

The Tsunami Sirens would have been going off for ages, many of those who perished have caused their own death because they chose to wait until the last moment. A few probably had no way of evacuating themselves due to health, age etc. Very sad indeed but also very frustrating when you see those trying to leave at the very last minute.
@cjb8010
@cjb8010 3 года назад
The tsunami sirens were NOT consistently sounded in all places at the same time. Sirens in some places only sounded after the tsunami had already overwhelmed the shorelines.
@tinageekbeta
@tinageekbeta 3 года назад
Not all towns have sirens. And the ones that do only go off when someones turns them on or makes announcement which could have significant lag time....or worse if utilities effected by the record breaking earthquake they just had.The tsunami hit the coast in 20 min after beginning of a record breaking earthquake that lasted for over 9 minutes plus many after shocks. Many people were still experiencing aftershocks and trying to cope with THAT as the water was already rising in places it never rose before. The coast sank as well as record breaking tsunami....it is just insane. Japan also has a large aging population compared to rest of world due to extremely low birth rate. So you have a small window of reaction time and the luck of how close you are to high ground. There were huge areas where most people were not even near high ground at all, so what could they do? So many variables in play when you have such a natural disaster.

Surah Takvir indexed with number 81, number of verses 29 1 When the sun is shining (and darkening), 2 And when the stars have fallen (scattered), 3 And when the hills have traveled (made of dust in the air), 4 And when the precious camels are left without pasture in the field, 5 And when the beasts are gathered together. 6 And when the seas boil like a blazing fire, 7 And when souls are united. 8 And when those girls buried alive are questioned, 9 For what sin have they been slain, 10 And when the scrolls are unfolded, 11 And when the heaven is removed, 12 And when Hell is set ablaze, 13 And when Paradise is near, 14 Then man will know what he has offered (good or bad). 15 I swear by the rising stars (day, they illuminate the night), 16 Traveling and hiding (like a deer in a den), 17 By the night when it is dark. 18 By the dawn when he shoots! 19 Lo! It is the saying of a noble messenger. 20 Who is mighty and high in the Lord of the Throne. 21 Who is revered there (among the angels) and faithful. 22 Your companion (Muhammad) is not mad! 23 And that he had seen him (Gabriel) on the clear eastern horizon. 24 And He it is Who does not doubt in the unseen (the revelation). 25 And it (the Qur'an) is not the saying of the accursed devil! 26 So where are you going? 27 It is naught but a reminder for mankind. 28 For the one who wants to be found in the truth. 29 But you can not, except as Allah wills, the Lord of the worlds...
