Saturday's Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile wasn't decided until the wire, with the speedy Hansen outlasting favored Union Rags by a head. But the race was won around the Juvenile's two turns.
Front-running Hansen was able to carve out a trouble-free trip in the 1 1/16-mile race, establishing a clear lead on the inside -- in stark contrast to Union Rags, who after breaking from post 10, was shuffled back to sixth early and hung four to five wide throughout.
Although Union Rags was able to threaten in the lane, testing Hansen to the limit, his closing punch was not enough to overcome his significant ground loss. The data-tracking service Trakus measured Union Rags as having raced 78 feet more than the winner.
"I tried to cover up, but I never had the opportunity," said his jockey, Javier Castellano.

I personally think Ramon Dominguez deserves a huge amount of credit for Hansen getting the win. Hansen had shown to be a speedball that out-classed his competition in his first 2 starts, but in this run Dominguez gets him to settle nicely down the backside. Union Rags didn't lose this race - Hansen won it squarely. Union Rags ran very green down the stretch, but that's not to be used as an excuse. Hansen showed that he is a legitimate 2 y.o. prospect. Kudos to Mike Maker, Hansen's trainer.

Both Hansen and Union Rags look great and they'll only get better. Perhaps the change in jockey to Leparoux will help Union Rags get a better trip? Can't wait until this Sunday for the big Union Rags v. Algorithms showdown!

I'm a big racing fan, don't claim to know much but I love going to track and trying to pick a winner. Im watching every race that Union Rags has had and Algorithms trying to pick between them come Sundays FOY. Im leaning towards UR bc he is the better price right now at 2-1, as for 8-5 from Algorithms. What do you guys think about that race?

@allbowdown384 that's true. I think, though, that even if Hansen is not a classic-distance type horse, he'll develop into the sort that gives all he has every race, every time. Now that he has the win over dirt, hopefully he gets more respect, especially since the track was favoring closers all day. I do think Union Rags may get the better of him down the road, though.

The way the race played out Union Rags ran 27 yards further than Hansen- at least that is the statistical analysis of having raced wide thru-out, take into account the drifting in the stretch and Union Rags is the better horse and will show that in the Derby.

If UR is the better horse than why did he not win? 'oh he was wide throughout' 'he drifted badly' did Hansen do that? No. The better horse is the horse who knows how to behave and thus wins races against horses who can't.

@rablla279 Union Rags had every opportunity to get by Hansen down the stretch and couldn't do it. I agree the wide trip he had didn't help his cause, but I don't think that's the reason he lost. I agree with Mike Watchmaker's take. If Union Rags was the beast everyone was making him out to be, he should have been able to put Hansen away. No other horse won a race on Saturday on the main track while setting the pace. I think Hansen deserves credit for getting the victory on that day.

I had him picked for the race since he won. What's with ESPN not even saying his name, even after he won?? I thought he'd be higher on a lot of people's radars. He seems like next year's Shackleford to me.

@ghostzapper2006 I also can't help but notice that your comments come after Union Rags' winning of the Fountain of Youth. No question he looked good winning, but what did he beat in that field? Sure he did it without being asked, but that doesn't change the fact that the best horse he beat was one that doesn't want to go much farther than 7 furlongs, 8 at best. I'll hold judgement on UR until the Florida Derby when he faces much better competition.

@ghostzapper2006 How else do I need to say it? On this day, I think Hansen was the best horse. Go back and look at the races from Saturday - the rail was dead. I realize cutting his own fractions without pressure helped, but I'm not gonna say that is the only reason he won this race. Union Rags was wide throughout, but guess what - he's gonna be wide throughout in the Derby, too. I think you're reading too much into my thoughts on this race - I don't see either of these horses winning the Derby.

They say that Cray horses turn gray as they get older but Henson was born gray just look at his baby photo with his mom

@greyarabian123 Doesn't change the fact that against elite juvenile competition Hansen went wire to wire again.. by the slightest of margins sure but he did.. and the fact that the horse only kept accelerating means he had plenty in the tank after a mile sixteenth.. I bet he could come in off the pace if he had to but if wire to wire is working let it work.. Hansen definitely isn't a 1 run horse (since he only kept getting faster down the stretch) like similar speedsters (Game On Dude namely).

@rablla279 All that said, I think all these one turn preps are pretty useless. If nothing else I think they're just for maintenance. When the major two turn preps come, that's when the cream will rise, but that's just my opinion. Many have looked impressive so far, including Alpha, El Padrino, and Algorithms. I personally like I'll Have Another at this point, but it's still incredibly early. I'm sure things will drastically change in the next two and a half months. Should be fun.

@jonpisces Ummm.....the KD is a mile and A Quarter, not a short race by any means.....its a freakin' long race as a matter of fact. The Preakness is a SIXTEENTH shorter but still longer than most all thoroughbred races. And the stretch of 1 & 1/2 Belmont is where all but the very best 3 year old fold like a Chinese laundry. Hansen may be like Hard Spun.....a great horse but unable to hold off all but the ultimate winner.

Some of the comments on here are funny. Hansen got a perfect front running trip with no other speed and Union Rags was wide the whole race while losing a lot of ground six wide turning for home and then ran greenly down the stretch before finally getting on the correct lead nearing the wire only to lose by a whisker. I can't wait for these two to run against each other in a derby prep. Union Rags will run by Hansen like he is tied to a post and I will make a lot of money. This one is a runner!!!

I loved that race.. looking over the stats.. Hansen was a horse that had never been in anything but first and even though it was against lesser competition when you win by 12 and 13 lengths.. you're not being challenged. That was a damn good race and that Hansen bet made me some nice money.

@rablla279 As far as the Holy Bull is concerned, you've gotta be joking, right? Algorithms was very clearly the best, but Hansen stumbled out of the gate (not horribly, but certainly didn't help) and was rushed to the front by Dominguez. I'm still not sure the rationale behind that ride, I believe the half was uncontested and he still went in 45 and change. It's not like he just threw in the towel once he was passed. His first start of the season with some issues, I'll give him a pass.

You got that right! People want to make excuses for hyped horses. UR was never going to pass Hansen that day. He was leg weary and exhausted when they came back to be unsaddled.

Mbernier08, you must have been watching this race with beer googles on. Union Rags was 5 wide on both turns and then ran green in the stretch and lost by only a nose to a completely lone F tripnfrontrunner who did not encounter an ounce of pace pressure the entire way. You need a drug test if you think this horse beats UR at any classic distance triple crown race.

so the extra 25 yards he lost by being so wide meant nothing, eh...

@dustywhipp5 It's because he came into this race after really racing against no noteworthy competition.. but as I saw he never won by less than 10 lengths and I was sure he had the guns to compete and he did. That horse continues to know nothing less than first.

Hansen had his time and he will notvstretch his speed toclassic distances. Hecwas permitted to dawdle in 1:12 for 3/4's on an easy lead and barely held off a horse who was 4 and 5 wide on both turns. You clowns are on drugs if you think yhis horse is bettervthan union rags. And the best horse did not win tat day, the one with by far the easiest trip one. Union rags would destroy this horse at anybclassic distance race.
