That is the vvti cam gear noise which only appears at cold start. If it’s just for one second, it’s ok. It will go away with oil pressure buildup. I have the same noise for over 10 years now :)
I just read that if you turn the key over without starting it, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it all the way over, it won't make that noise. I haven't tried it yet since I had just started it RIGHT before I read that tip.
Nah. Won't work. I believe mine have went to the place of no returns. Have to replace this gear soon. When I cold start, it rattles so bad, it causes the engine to stall. Then I restart and it works. Only the first cold start it does this. Now it's every morning, when the engine is cold.
Would it damages the engine. It happened to my Corolla but only when it is cold. In youtube some says design issue and just leave it because it will cost $1500-$2000 to fix it and not 100% can fix it. Thanks in advance.
I think I solved the starter noise. It's all about the key. You see, us old schoolers were taught to hold the key in the on position until the engine caught. But this vehicle is equipped with push button starts in the more pricier models. That means that all you need to do is engage that process and let the key go. I've tried it a bunch of times and it works fine. Just turn the key quickly one time and let it go in under half a second. The engine will still turn over until the engine catches and turns on. It's just you don't have to hold the key in the start position anymore.
I've read all the comments, some say starter, others say vvti cam gear actuator. I listened to the sound this car made at initial start then went to another video hearing the sound of a defective vvti and they are totally different. Judge for yourself what you hear.
It’s caused by the variable valve timing actuator handling the cam. Happens when the engine starts up when cold. Not a big deal. Just annoying. Not worth getting into the engine to fix unless you’re fixing something else requiring top engine disassembly.
okay so my 2011 carolla does this. at first it was just when i started it, but now itll make that noise at seemingly random intervals while im driving, like when im at a red light. ive seen people say the starter or mabye a belt? any other thoughts?
I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla S, it has 260,000 miles, best car I ever owned. It started doing this at 200k miles. Serpentine Belt? Starter? Is it the timing chain belt/tensioner? I am not 100% sure. How did you fix it?
@@spartacussoe2339 it would only make the noise if it was a first start. It didn't really matter summer or winter. It would make the noise more in the winter. It would also make the noise more when the oil was low and I needed to add more oil. It would also make the same noise while I am turning slowing at a light, and the oil light would flicker. I have to add about a court every 2500 miles and I get 0w20 every 5k.
@@spartacussoe2339 Speaking on this, I finally got this fixed. It was my starter making noise and while turning pulling away from the flywheel! They replaced the alternator, starter and serpentine belt. Runs like a champ!
@@steveng93 Replacing the starter did not fix the noise. The noise gets better after oil changes, but only for so long. I just hit 270k miles. I am putting in 1 quart of oil a month. Timing chain/tension? If so, they want $1,500 to fix.
I have the same problem on my 2010 Corolla. It's only the very first start when the engine is cold. I think it's the starter issue, cam rattle noise is very different.
I have same noise on my 2009 Corolla but it was right after the end of the start (continue from start); however, if the weather is cold, I can start 2-3 times in a roll and the noise can repeat as long as car not warmed up. After car is warmed up, not happened once. Is this the VVT-i Gear TSB issue or Starter issue? Thanks in advance.
My car had the same issue... this noise is coming from starter motor and I got it serviced/fixed. VVTI noise is different and my car still rattles on cold start.
@@amjadnaseem3388 Thank you so much for your information. I feel much better now because it is only starter. I have uploaded my Corolla Cold Start noise here few days ago but no one reply to my video yet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s9gx4fO3tmk.html Is this similar to what you have on your starter? Thank you so much for your help. Appreciated all your comments. 👍
@@callmebackfriday2 i have the same noise happens at the first start in cold weather and i have been told by mechanic that its actually the noise comes from timing chain and still okay un less you get belt squeaking and if its bad then you need to do the timing chain
Mine was really bad. Changed the starter, the noise got much better, but that grind is still there on the 1st cold start. I've had others also agree that the problem is the oil pressure being low at startup . I don't know how critical it is or if you need to get it addressed.
So I finally found out what this noise is. It seems to be the VVT actuator it needs to be replaced there’s a video but if you don’t feel comfortable take it to a mechanic.
A lot of comments on this but can someone just please answer exactly what it is. My 2010 Corolla has been doing this for years now every once in a while. The car continued to run tho and it never did it everytime.
As other people have mentioned, the sound is coming from the starter motor (so it should be replaced with a new unit). The sound happens usually on first startup when the engine is cold but stops after the engine is warm. Shot in the dark, but it's either the solenoid pushing/pulling the gear is old and needs to be replaced, or just dirt, dust and poor lubrication stopping the starter gear for moving back and forth smoothly. FYI - The starter motor turns a gear that turns the flywheel at the back of the engine, making it start. If the starter motor gear doesnt moe back and forth smoothly, then it can grind against the teeth of the flywheel (which will turn a lot faster than the starter when the engineis running). Hope this helps.
@@steveng93 hi there, so an oil change of altarnating of different viscosity will help remove the tsb rattle? i hope so because it's always annoying every cold starting and rattles for a 1 second
My car also have that abnormal sound in cold start.I replaced timing chain, chain guards and chain tensioner also. But still have sound. Please any one can help me to resolve this?
@@wira539 Could be or the actuator. I think there is a split millisecond difference between the two problems but starter could become more of a fail issue eventually. I am relieved however that I can decrease the frequency by just letting off on the key very quickly
@@develop7911 I did it myself. I reckon a shop would probably do it for around $500. Took me a couple of hours and Im a slow back yard mechanic. You'd have to ask around. Maybe find a shop that specializes in Toyotas. I think a shop should be able to do the job relatively quickly. Might want to get them to replace valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, etc, while they're in there.
Can this noise problem be solved? What is the solution, my 2010 Toyota Corolla is making exactly the same noise when ever i start it in the morning or if i start it after packing it for many hours. Please help me.
@@phynixglobaltouchlimited takes alot of cash and a good mechanic to do it I had a 2004 started at 330000kms dealer said alot of them do this and not to worry about it got that motor up to 530000kms and sold the car running and driving not burning a drop of oil but it was super annoying none the less
@@stinkfart697 that's not the starter slapping the flywheel? I know vvtis are known for this problem but I just wanna make sure before I start taking it apart My car makes the same noise on cold start and I've been thinking its the starter slapping
@@lysssmndz had to replace the whole thing including their pulleys timing chains etc also don't forget the actuator also known as vvti sensor shortly after replacing the timing chain had to replace the gear of the cam shaft which let's the engine oil in as the button was jammed and it is a common problem in these engines
@@khaledbdour1762 I added a block heater to heat up my engine before cold start to avoid this issue. I also tap the starter once or twice before fully starting. Sometimes that helps. I havent personally seen these break. I will avoid replacing this part until something goes wrong
@@Technicalideas3033 how much does changing vvti cam cost? My estimate is $1500-$2000. I have a high mileage and paint peered Corolla and most likely let it runs until the end. Thanks in advance.
