This 2011 Ford Ranger equipped with the 4.0 SOHC (single overhead cam) has sprung a coolant leak at the plastic thermostat housing. This is a common issues with the plastic parts. I removed it and upgraded it with a Dorman Aluminum housing. Very robust. You do not need to remove the intake.
Tools you need.
Hose clamp pliers. 8mm socket. ratchet 7mm socket. coolant to refill and a drain pan to catch the old stuff. Oh and a can of brake clean to clean everything up.
Thank you for watching.
Love you all. BFT

All the ones I've done I find this the easiest way to do it as well. Too much work for intake removal.

After TRYING an aftermarket aluminum housing (No matter what I do it leaks around the temp sensor-Tried new O ring and NEW MOTORCRAFT sender) I'm going back to OEM unit. It came all as 1 piece WITH a new thermostat installed. CAN I get it in w/o removing the upper housing?

@richardbarkley9909 the dorman comes with a new thermostat and o ring for the temp sensor. Never had one leak. The only way to get it without removing the housing is to remove the intake. You sure it isn't one of the little hoses leaking?

@@BeardedFordTech All hoses were new when I installed the aluminum housing. Its been the temp sender the whole time. I actually bought a Dorman yesterday from NAPA under their name......

@richardbarkley9909 mm. That's awkward. Can you email me licture please. Year make model engine size and mileage. See if I can reach out to the guys at dorman and have them contact you.

What interval would you recommend changing the thermostat? I still have my original from 2007. I have kept up with the coolant changes. Should I swap it out based on age? Thanks

The thermostat itself? No there's no interval for that. Sounds like you change the coolant like your supposed to. You would only change the thermostat if it's stuck open or closed. Stuck closed engine gets hot quickly. Stuck open takes forever for it to warm up cause it's constantly circulating. If it starts leaking change the housing to the aluminum one like I did. It comes with a thermostat.
