Watch as we swap the original Navara wellbody for an MRT aluminium tray and 3 door aluminium canopy. The swap gives us much more room as well as better access to the inside of the canopy.
Other upgrades include the installation of an Ironman steel bullbar, 9" spotlights, an Ironman 145 litre long range fuel tank and a Pedders GVM+ suspension upgrade.

Hey Rusty What tail lights did you use and how did you install them. Great video
@RustysOutbackAdventures
@RustysOutbackAdventures 2 года назад
Hi Harry, the lights are those supplied by MRT, along with the mounting plate. I used the existing wiring to the original lights to work out which wire goes where, then matched them to the new lights....a pretty simple process, really.

Hey rusty did you need a permit for the tray back conversion or did you need to get it inspected at the pits
@RustysOutbackAdventures
@RustysOutbackAdventures 2 года назад
That's a very good question! I just went ahead and did the conversion.....but I do know that Navaras did come out with with a tray on the back, instead of a wellbody. I never had it over the pits, either.

hi Rusty was wondering how you fixed the fuel filler issue. have same vehicle and fuel filler neck is 100mm to high. not sure best way to tackle fixing the issue kind regards steve
@RustysOutbackAdventures
@RustysOutbackAdventures 2 года назад
Hi Steve. It took me a couple of goes to get the fuel filler set up so that I could fill the tank without getting air locks in it. I went to a wrecking yard and bought a fuel filler pipe and locking cap from a Mitsubishi Triton, and adapted that to fit, and secured the filler to the front edge of the mudguard on the passenger's side. One thing I have to do, to fill the tank, is turn the filler nozzle upside down (instead of holding it in the filler in the conventional way) and this allows me to fill the tank normally. I'm considering installing a second, smaller tank, so that will probably need a bit of planning to get the filling and dispensing into the LR fuel tank, sorted.

may i know the size of your roof rack; I wish I could create similar size and i reckon you maximized the whole area of the vehicle roof. Thanks

Since that video was made, I've fabricated a new aluminium roof rack....here's a link to that video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oZPmANEMqs0.html

Hi Rusty great vids and channel. I also have a D40 with a GVM upgrade and a well body. Just watched your conversion video and I think I will be doing the same. Looks much more room that the fibreglass canopies and with side access.

Hi and glad you like the video and channel. I started with a fibreglass canopy on the wellbody but got sick of always having to climb inside to get what I wanted/needed. The tray and aluminium 3 door canopy was an obvious choice for me. I went with the 1000mm high option, rather than the standard 860mm high canopy (even though it sticks up above the roofline of the cab) as it affords me more room including more headroom when the doors are open. If you go the MRT route, I'd suggest adding the roof supports for more strength. Be mindful that the MRT design doesn't allow you to hang anything off the rear of the canopy if you go without the back door....ie. no spare wheel or jerry cans. I wasn't going for the 3 door but the guy at MRT talked me into it, and I'm grateful that he did, as it adds another level of options to accessing stuff in the canopy. Good luck with your conversion.

Hi Rusty, great video looking at doing this to our Ford Ranger, just wondering if you know how much weight you saved by going to a aluminium tray and canopy over the wellbody and fibreglass canopy. Cheers Darcy.
@RustysOutbackAdventures
@RustysOutbackAdventures 3 года назад
Hi Darcy, the weight saving was probably around 100 - 125kg. Before doing the conversion, I weighed the vehicle without the bullbar and long range tank, but had 50L in the original tank and my toolbox in the back. After the conversion to the tray and canopy, and with the bullbar and long range tank fitted, again with 50L of fuel and my toolbox, it came in around 2400kg. If you check out my video about the GVM upgrade, you'll see the Navara's original GVM is pretty low, compared to your Ranger and others. Good luck with your conversion...it's not hard to do.

Great video, I want one now, how hot does the inside get with the unpainted checker plate? And how much extra weight was it for the new tray and canopy over the well body and and old canopy? I need to watch my weight. Keep the videos coming I am enjoying them
@RustysOutbackAdventures
@RustysOutbackAdventures 3 года назад
Hi Kevin, and thanks for your comments. The temperature inside the canopy doesn't get too hot, but I am planning on insulating teh ceiling and doors...watch out for that video in the near future. Regarding the weight, it came in at 2400kg with the tray, canopy, bullbar, long range fuel tank with 50L in it, and my medium sized tool box. Check out my 'Why I did a GVM upgrade to my Navara' video, for a detailed explanation of weights, etc.

Nice set up. Do yourself a favour though and move the UHF antenna to the roof rack or canopy. You'll get better reception and transmission even with a 2/3db

Thanks for the tip, @Outdoors. Unfortunately, I have limited headroom in the carport so I'll wipe out the antenna if it's on the roof or canopy.
