It’s 1:41 in the morning... I have an essay due today, but I think my teacher will understand why I couldn’t do it when explain to him that I got caught up watching the 2011 croquet world championship.

For singles, each player has two balls - black/blue & red/yellow. They play in blue, red, black, yellow sequence. The first ball through a particular hoop scores the 'point' and then the next hoop is played. It's like matchplay golf. The objective is to score the hoop (must be in a specific direction) and prevent the other from scoring. That's the basic idea without going into the complexity of rules. Fabulous, evil, tactical game :o)
I came here while watching a league of their own (film). Mr Harveys elder in laws are playing croquet in a beautiful garden in wheelchairs, and I had to see how the game is actually played. My grandparents always had croquet balls and mallets hanging around the house when I was a little kid and I could never understand how to hit those balls in tall (Lawn) grass. Crazy the world championship has as many people watching as a typical regular season small town basketball game. Too bad.
There are maybe a handful of events worldwide that pay (very little) every year, mostly it's all done for the love of the game. I know some guys that gave up croquet and started wrestling bears instead. They burned out, the pressure was too much and they wanted to do something a bit more relaxing.
They are super beefy so they don't move. The are 3 3/4" while the balls are 3 5/8". The balls a very heavy compared to rec. balls, as well as being larger. The sides of the hoops are thick so that they do deflect in a little better, but that is the only good bit.
They tried to make croquet the high school sport over football back in the 1950s but croquet was just too much. Padded football was deemed better for young developing minds and bodies. Legend has it that football star Johnny Unitas was the top player on his school croquet team before the ban set it. He was a a "lawn 1 kid".

These participants cover their own costs and are likely many thousands of dollars in the red for their years of playing croquet. We do it not for money, but for love of the game.

First, you need to find some treacherous, hilly, or swampy terrain. Second, put your hoops in some tough challenging areas such as on a steep bank or in a mud puddle. Keep it random. Change it up. Keep it interesting. It’s a different game every time you set it up. There are some rules to learn but I’ve covered the fundamentals here. That’s croquet!
@@puffythecampfireplayer6143 I mean sure you can do that... we always want there to be more mallet sports out there... polo doesn't have much profile these days and "free-range" croquet has its charms... but what you are seeing is the world's best talent playing on a mostly predictable, regular surface when they can control the ball and hit incredible cross court shots... when you have that kind of predictability that's when the tactics and strategy really start
