According to the Dodgers, Campos, the umpire, yelled at the Dodgers dugout something along the lines of "I don't wanna hear another word," probably referring to complaining about his ball/strike calls. Matt Kemp then yelled out "Lets go Dre!" referring to Andre Either who was then at bat. Campos then ejected Kemp. The Dodgers were pissed off because Kemp got ejected for nothing, just for yelling encouragement to his teammate. That's at least the Dodgers side of the story.
And c'mon. "I dont want to hear it anymore"? At least give the guy some sort of explanation. I hardly think a good explanation was given in the one sentence the ump said to Kemp in the entire video. 0:31 The ump is basically degrading the player and saying that a player is worth less than the ump and saying he doesnt need to explain anything since Kemp is a player and he's an umpire. Where's the mutual respect?
No I'm not its just ridiculous, first off it's impossible for an umpire to hear what's being said in the dugout given the noise at a baseball stadium & second the umpire should be paying attention to what's happening on the field not in the dugout.
Basically, you can't ever say anything to some of these umpires. Not all of them, of course, but to a decent number of them. And unless Kemp said something really bad, there really should not have been an ejection there.
Ejections are subject to "some" (not a large area, but noticeable) interpretation. Umpires can deem certain phrases to be past the line of unsportsmanlike and some can push the line a bit farther. It really depends on the situation, score, and if it needs attention. For example, Big Papi's ejection (you can look up the video) if you notice he got a large amount of leeway to these possible factors ( He's a star, Tim Timmons has a long line, and would ejecting him at that moment fit the crime?). When he broke the phone, that situation definitely needed attention, so the "punishment" fit the crime and took more heat off of the umpire. Look at the different ejections, who was ejected, and why it occurred at that moment.
Not saying what Kemp did was the smartest thing, but the ump shouldve talked it out with Kemp. I would be pissed off too if I was trying to talk to someone and they were ignoring me. I always have the highest respect for an umpire that goes nose to nose with a player or manager and defends his decision, even if I don't agree with it. What this reminds me of is the "I'm the parent, fuck you kid" attitude that a lot of parents use when an argument with their kids doesnt go the way they want it to.
Matt Kemp was ejected for cheering on his teammate. He said "Let's go Dre." If you read Mattingly's lips around 0:29 you see him telling the ump that. Horrendous, egotistical umpiring.
what did he do to get treated like that, if I was that player I would punch that umpire because he was sitting on the bench and gets ejected and that's foolish for the umpire to do it!!!!
So, coaches and players should be allowed to say ANYTHING directed at umpires? They should be able to swear and cuss at umpires? They should be allowed to threaten umpires? And, there should be no consequences as long as they are in the dugout?
